Psalm 5

Prayer for Protection from the Wicked.

For the music director; for ^[a]flute accompaniment. A Psalm of David.

5 ^(A)Listen to my words, Lord,
Consider my ^(B)sighing.
²Listen to ^(C)the sound of my cry for help, ^(D)my King and my God,
For to You I pray.
³In the morning, Lord, ^[b]You will hear my voice;
In the ^(E)morning I will present my ^[c]prayer to You and be on the ^(F)watch.

⁴For You are not a God ^(G)who takes pleasure in wickedness;
^(H)No evil can dwell with You.
⁵The ^(I)boastful will not ^(J)stand before Your eyes;
You ^(K)hate all who do injustice.
⁶You ^(L)destroy those who speak lies;
The Lord loathes ^(M)the person of bloodshed and deceit.
⁷But as for me, ^(N)by Your abundant graciousness I will enter Your house,
^[d]At Your holy temple I will ^(O)bow in ^(P)reverence for You.

⁸Lord, ^(Q)lead me ^(R)in Your righteousness ^(S)because of my enemies;
Make Your way ^[e]straight before me.
⁹For there is ^(T)nothing ^[f]trustworthy in ^[g]their mouth;
Their ^(U)inward part is destruction itself.
Their ^(V)throat is an open grave;
They ^[h]flatter with their tongue.
¹⁰Make them pay, God;
^(W)Have them fall by their own schemes!
^(X)Scatter them in the multitude of their wrongdoings,
For they are ^(Y)rebellious against You.

¹¹But ^(Z)rejoice, all who ^(AA)take refuge in You,
Sing for joy forever!
And ^[i]may You ^(AB)shelter them,
That those who ^(AC)love Your name may rejoice in You.
¹²For You ^(AD)bless the righteous person, Lord,
You ^(AE)surround him with favor as with a shield.

The Lord Exalted for His Goodness.

A Psalm of Praise, of David.

145 I will ^(A)exalt You, ^(B)my God, the King,
And I will ^(C)bless Your name forever and ever.
²Every day I will bless You,
And I will ^(D)praise Your name forever and ever.
³^(E)Great is the Lord, and highly to be praised;
And His ^(F)greatness is unsearchable.
⁴One ^(G)generation will praise Your works to another,
And will declare Your mighty acts.
⁵On the ^(H)glorious ^[a]splendor of Your majesty
And ^(I)on Your wonderful works, I will meditate.
⁶People will speak of the ^[b]power of Your ^(J)awesome acts,
And I will ^(K)tell of Your greatness.
⁷They will burst forth ^[c]in speaking of Your ^(L)abundant goodness,
And will ^(M)shout joyfully of Your righteousness.

⁸The Lord is ^(N)gracious and compassionate;
Slow to anger and great in mercy.

¹⁰^(Q)All Your works will give thanks to You, Lord,
And Your ^(R)godly ones will bless You.
¹¹They will speak of the ^(S)glory of Your kingdom,
And talk of Your might,

And the ^(U)glory of the majesty of ^[e]Your kingdom.
¹³Your kingdom is ^[f]an ^(V)everlasting kingdom,
And Your dominion endures throughout all generations.
^[g]The Lord is faithful in His words,
And holy in all His works.

¹⁴The Lord ^(W)supports all who fall,
And ^(X)raises up all who are bowed down.
¹⁵The eyes of all ^[h]look to You,
And You ^(Y)give them their food in due time.
¹⁶You ^(Z)open Your hand
And satisfy the desire of every living thing.

¹⁷The Lord is ^(AA)righteous in all His ways,
And kind in all His works.
¹⁸The Lord is ^(AB)near to all who call on Him,
To all who call on Him ^(AC)in truth.
¹⁹He will ^(AD)fulfill the desire of those who fear Him;
He will also ^(AE)hear their cry for help and save them.
²⁰The Lord ^(AF)watches over all who love Him,
But He will destroy all the ^(AG)wicked.
²¹My ^(AH)mouth will speak the praise of the Lord,
And ^(AI)all flesh will ^(AJ)bless His holy name forever and ever.

¹⁸^(A)Little children, let’s not love with word or with tongue, but in deed and ^(B)truth. ¹⁹We will know by this that we are ^(C)of the truth, and will set our heart at ease before Him, ²⁰that if our heart condemns us, that God is greater than our heart, and He knows all things. ²¹^(D)Beloved, if our heart does not condemn us, we have ^(E)confidence ^[a]before God; ²²and ^(F)whatever we ask, we receive from Him, because we ^(G)keep His commandments and do ^(H)the things that are pleasing in His sight.

Testing the Spirits

4 ^(P)Beloved, do not believe every ^(Q)spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God, because ^(R)many false prophets have gone out into the world. ²By this you know the Spirit of God: ^(S)every spirit that ^(T)confesses that ^(U)Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is from God; ³and every spirit that ^(V)does not confess Jesus is not from God; this is the spirit of the ^(W)antichrist, which you have heard is coming, and ^(X)now it is already in the world. ⁴You are from God, ^(Y)little children, and ^(Z)have overcome them; because ^(AA)greater is He who is in you than ^(AB)he who is in the world. ⁵^(AC)They are from the world, therefore they speak as from the world, and the world listens to them. ⁶^(AD)We are from God. ^(AE)The one who knows God listens to us; ^(AF)the one who is not from God does not listen to us. By this we know ^(AG)the spirit of truth and ^(AH)the spirit of error.
