The Beauty and Glory of Zion.

A Song; a Psalm of the sons of Korah.

48 (A)Great is the Lord, and greatly to be praised,
In the (B)city of our God, His (C)holy mountain.
(D)Beautiful in elevation, (E)the joy of the whole earth,
Is Mount Zion in the far north,
The (F)city of the great King.
God, in her palaces,
Has made Himself known as a (G)stronghold.

For, lo, the (H)kings assembled themselves,
They passed by together.
They saw it, then they were amazed;
They were (I)terrified, they [a]fled in alarm.
[b]Panic seized them there,
Anguish, as of (J)a woman in childbirth.
With the (K)east wind
You (L)break the (M)ships of Tarshish.
As we have heard, so have we seen
In the city of the Lord of hosts, in the city of our God;
God will (N)establish her forever. [c]Selah.

We have thought on (O)Your lovingkindness, O God,
In the midst of Your temple.
10 As is Your (P)name, O God,
So is Your (Q)praise to the ends of the earth;
Your (R)right hand is full of righteousness.
11 Let Mount (S)Zion be glad,
Let the (T)daughters of Judah rejoice
Because of Your judgments.
12 Walk about Zion and go around her;
Count her (U)towers;
13 Consider her (V)ramparts;
Go through her palaces,
That you may (W)tell it to the next generation.
14 For [d]such is God,
Our God forever and ever;
He will (X)guide us [e]until death.

The Folly of Trusting in Riches.

For the choir director. A Psalm of the sons of Korah.

49 (Y)Hear this, all peoples;
Give ear, all (Z)inhabitants of the world,
Both (AA)low and high,
Rich and poor together.
My mouth will (AB)speak wisdom,
And the meditation of my heart will be (AC)understanding.
I will incline my ear to (AD)a proverb;
(AE)I will [f]express my (AF)riddle on the harp.

Why should I (AG)fear in days of adversity,
When the iniquity of my [g]foes surrounds me,
Even those who (AH)trust in their wealth
And boast in the abundance of their riches?
No man can by any means (AI)redeem his brother
Or give to God a (AJ)ransom for him—
For (AK)the redemption of [h]his soul is costly,
And he should cease trying forever—
That he should (AL)live on eternally,
That he should not [i](AM)undergo decay.

10 For he sees that even (AN)wise men die;
The (AO)stupid and the senseless alike perish
And (AP)leave their wealth to others.
11 Their [j](AQ)inner thought is that their houses (AR)are forever
And their dwelling places to all generations;
They have (AS)called their lands after their own names.
12 But (AT)man in his [k]pomp will not endure;
He is like the [l]beasts that [m]perish.

13 This is the (AU)way of those who are foolish,
And of those after them who (AV)approve their words. [n]Selah.
14 As sheep they are appointed (AW)for [o]Sheol;
Death shall be their shepherd;
And the (AX)upright shall rule over them in the morning,
And their form shall be for [p]Sheol (AY)to consume
[q]So that they have no habitation.
15 But God will (AZ)redeem my soul from the [r]power of [s]Sheol,
For (BA)He will receive me. Selah.

16 Do not be afraid (BB)when a man becomes rich,
When the [t]glory of his house is increased;
17 For when he dies he will (BC)carry nothing away;
His [u]glory will not descend after him.
18 Though while he lives he (BD)congratulates [v]himself—
And though men praise you when you do well for yourself—
19 [w]He shall (BE)go to the generation of his fathers;
They will never see (BF)the light.
20 (BG)Man in his [x]pomp, yet without understanding,
Is (BH)like the [y]beasts that [z]perish.

God the Judge of the Righteous and the Wicked.

A Psalm of [aa]Asaph.

50 (BI)The Mighty One, God, the Lord, has spoken,
And summoned the earth (BJ)from the rising of the sun to its setting.
Out of Zion, (BK)the perfection of beauty,
God (BL)has shone forth.
May our God (BM)come and not keep silence;
(BN)Fire devours before Him,
And it is very (BO)tempestuous around Him.
He (BP)summons the heavens above,
And the earth, to judge His people:
“Gather My (BQ)godly ones to Me,
Those who have made a (BR)covenant with Me by (BS)sacrifice.”
And the (BT)heavens declare His righteousness,
For (BU)God Himself is judge. [ab]Selah.

(BV)Hear, O My people, and I will speak;
O Israel, I will testify [ac]against you;
I am God, (BW)your God.
“I do (BX)not reprove you for your sacrifices,
And your burnt offerings are continually before Me.
“I shall take no (BY)young bull out of your house
Nor male goats out of your folds.
10 “For (BZ)every beast of the forest is Mine,
The cattle on a thousand hills.
11 “I know every (CA)bird of the mountains,
And everything that moves in the field is [ad]Mine.
12 “If I were hungry I would not tell you,
For the (CB)world is Mine, and [ae]all it contains.
13 “Shall I eat the flesh of [af](CC)bulls
Or drink the blood of male goats?
14 “Offer to God (CD)a sacrifice of thanksgiving
And (CE)pay your vows to the Most High;
15 (CF)Call upon Me in the day of trouble;
I shall (CG)rescue you, and you will (CH)honor Me.”

16 But to the wicked God says,
“What right have you to tell of My statutes
And to take (CI)My covenant in your mouth?
17 “For you (CJ)hate discipline,
And you (CK)cast My words behind you.
18 “When you see a thief, you [ag](CL)are pleased with him,
And [ah]you (CM)associate with adulterers.
19 “You [ai](CN)let your mouth loose in evil
And your (CO)tongue frames deceit.
20 “You sit and (CP)speak against your brother;
You slander your own mother’s son.
21 “These things you have done and (CQ)I kept silence;
You thought that I was just like you;
I will (CR)reprove you and state the case in order before your eyes.

22 “Now consider this, you who (CS)forget God,
Or I will (CT)tear you in pieces, and there will be none to deliver.
23 “He who (CU)offers a sacrifice of thanksgiving honors Me;
And to him who [aj](CV)orders his way aright
I shall (CW)show the salvation of God.”

Be Like Christ

Therefore if there is any encouragement in Christ, if there is any consolation of love, if there is any (A)fellowship of the Spirit, if any [a](B)affection and compassion, (C)make my joy complete [b]by (D)being of the same mind, maintaining the same love, united in spirit, intent on one purpose. Do nothing [c]from [d](E)selfishness or (F)empty conceit, but with humility of mind (G)regard one another as more important than yourselves; (H)do not merely look out for your own personal interests, but also for the interests of others. (I)Have this attitude [e]in yourselves which was also in (J)Christ Jesus, who, although He (K)existed in the (L)form of God, (M)did not regard equality with God a thing to be [f]grasped, but [g](N)emptied Himself, taking the form of a (O)bond-servant, and (P)being made in the likeness of men. Being found in appearance as a man, (Q)He humbled Himself by becoming (R)obedient to the point of death, even (S)death [h]on a cross. (T)For this reason also, God (U)highly exalted Him, and bestowed on Him (V)the name which is above every name, 10 so that at the name of Jesus (W)every knee will bow, of (X)those who are in heaven and on earth and under the earth, 11 and that every tongue will confess that Jesus Christ is (Y)Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

12 So then, my beloved, (Z)just as you have always obeyed, not as in my presence only, but now much more in my absence, work out your (AA)salvation with (AB)fear and trembling; 13 for it is (AC)God who is at work in you, both to will and to work (AD)for His good pleasure.

14 Do all things without (AE)grumbling or disputing; 15 so that you will [i]prove yourselves to be (AF)blameless and innocent, (AG)children of God above reproach in the midst of a (AH)crooked and perverse generation, among whom you [j](AI)appear as [k]lights in the world, 16 holding [l]fast the word of life, so that in (AJ)the day of Christ I will have reason to glory because I did not (AK)run in vain nor (AL)toil in vain. 17 But even if I am being (AM)poured out as a drink offering upon (AN)the sacrifice and service of your faith, I rejoice and share my joy with you all. 18 You too, I urge you, rejoice in the same way and share your joy with me.

Timothy and Epaphroditus

19 But I hope [m]in the Lord Jesus to (AO)send (AP)Timothy to you shortly, so that I also may be encouraged when I learn of your condition. 20 For I have no one else (AQ)of kindred spirit who will genuinely be concerned for your welfare. 21 For they all (AR)seek after their own interests, not those of Christ Jesus. 22 But you know (AS)of his proven worth, that (AT)he served with me in the furtherance of the gospel (AU)like a child serving his father. 23 (AV)Therefore I hope to send him immediately, as soon as I see how things go with me; 24 and (AW)I trust in the Lord that I myself also will be coming shortly. 25 But I thought it necessary to send to you (AX)Epaphroditus, my brother and (AY)fellow worker and (AZ)fellow soldier, who is also your [n](BA)messenger and (BB)minister to my need; 26 because he was longing [o]for you all and was distressed because you had heard that he was sick. 27 For indeed he was sick to the point of death, but God had mercy on him, and not on him only but also on me, so that I would not have sorrow upon sorrow. 28 Therefore I have sent him all the more eagerly so that when you see him again you may rejoice and I may be less concerned about you. 29 (BC)Receive him then in the Lord with all joy, and (BD)hold men like him in high regard; 30 because he came close to death [p](BE)for the work of Christ, risking his life to (BF)complete [q]what was deficient in your service to me.
