An Exuberant Declaration of Faith

A Psalm of David.

27 The Lord is my (A)light and my salvation;
Whom shall I fear?
The (B)Lord is the strength of my life;
Of whom shall I be afraid?

17 (A)“Son of man, I have made you (B)a watchman for the house of Israel; therefore hear a word from My mouth, and give them (C)warning from Me: 18 When I say to the wicked, ‘You shall surely die,’ and you give him no warning, nor speak to warn the wicked from his wicked way, to save his life, that same wicked man (D)shall die in his iniquity; but his blood I will require at your hand. 19 Yet, if you warn the wicked, and he does not turn from his wickedness, nor from his wicked way, he shall die in his iniquity; (E)but you have delivered your soul.

20 “Again, when a (F)righteous man turns from his righteousness and commits iniquity, and I lay a stumbling block before him, he shall die; because you did not give him warning, he shall die in his sin, and his righteousness which he has done shall not be remembered; but his blood I will require at your hand. 21 Nevertheless if you warn the righteous man that the righteous should not sin, and he does not sin, he shall surely live because he took warning; also you will have delivered your soul.”

The Greatest Commandment

“Now this is (A)the commandment, and these are the statutes and judgments which the Lord your God has commanded to teach you, that you may observe them in the land which you are crossing over to possess, (B)that you may fear the Lord your God, to keep all His statutes and His commandments which I command you, you and your son and your grandson, all the days of your life, (C)and that your days may be prolonged. Therefore hear, O Israel, and [a]be careful to observe it, that it may be well with you, and that you may (D)multiply greatly (E)as the Lord God of your fathers has promised you—(F)‘a land flowing with milk and honey.’

(G)“Hear, O Israel: [b]The Lord our God, the Lord is one! (H)You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, (I)with all your soul, and with all your strength.

“And (J)these words which I command you today shall be in your heart. (K)You shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, when you walk by the way, when you lie down, and when you rise up. (L)You shall bind them as a sign on your hand, and they shall be as frontlets between your eyes. (M)You shall write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates.

Caution Against Disobedience

10 “So it shall be, when the Lord your God brings you into the land of which He [c]swore to your fathers, to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, to give you large and beautiful cities (N)which you did not build, 11 houses full of all good things, which you did not fill, hewn-out wells which you did not dig, vineyards and olive trees which you did not plant—(O)when you have eaten and are full— 12 then beware, lest you forget the (P)Lord who brought you out of the land of Egypt, from the house of bondage. 13 You shall (Q)fear the Lord your God and serve Him, and (R)shall take oaths in His name. 14 You shall not go after other gods, (S)the gods of the peoples who are all around you 15 (for (T)the Lord your God is a jealous God (U)among you), lest the anger of the Lord your God be aroused against you and destroy you from the face of the earth.

16 (V)“You shall not [d]tempt the Lord your God (W)as you [e]tempted Him in Massah. 17 You shall (X)diligently keep the commandments of the Lord your God, His testimonies, and His statutes which He has commanded you.

Greeting

Paul, a bondservant of God and an apostle of Jesus Christ, according to the faith of God’s elect and (A)the acknowledgment of the truth (B)which accords with godliness, in hope of eternal life which God, who (C)cannot lie, promised before time began, but has in due time manifested His word through preaching, which was committed to me according to the commandment of God our Savior;

To (D)Titus, a true son in our common faith:

Grace, mercy, and peace from God the Father and [a]the Lord Jesus Christ our Savior.

Qualified Elders

For this reason I left you in Crete, that you should (E)set in order the things that are lacking, and appoint elders in every city as I commanded you— if a man is blameless, the husband of one wife, (F)having faithful children not accused of [b]dissipation or insubordination. For a [c]bishop must be blameless, as a steward of God, not self-willed, not quick-tempered, (G)not given to wine, not violent, not greedy for money, but hospitable, a lover of what is good, sober-minded, just, holy, self-controlled, holding fast the faithful word as he has been taught, that he may be able, by sound doctrine, both to exhort and convict those who contradict.

The Elders’ Task

10 For there are many insubordinate, both idle (H)talkers and deceivers, especially those of the circumcision,

17 Therefore, if anyone (A)is in Christ, he is (B)a new creation; (C)old things have passed away; behold, all things have become (D)new. 18 Now all things are of God, (E)who has reconciled us to Himself through Jesus Christ, and has given us the ministry of reconciliation, 19 that is, that (F)God was in Christ reconciling the world to Himself, not [a]imputing their trespasses to them, and has committed to us the word of reconciliation.

20 Now then, we are (G)ambassadors for Christ, as though God were pleading through us: we implore you on Christ’s behalf, be reconciled to God. 21 For (H)He made Him who knew no sin to be sin for us, that we might become (I)the righteousness of God in Him.
