Psalm 22

A Cry of Anguish and a Song of Praise.

22 ^(A)My God, my God, why have You forsaken me?
^(B)Far from my ^[b]help are the words of my ^[c]^(C)groaning.
²My God, I ^(D)cry out by day, but You do not answer;
And by night, but ^[d]I have no rest.
³Yet ^(E)You are holy,
You who ^[e]are enthroned upon ^(F)the praises of Israel.
⁴In You our fathers ^(G)trusted;
They trusted and You ^(H)rescued them.
⁵To You they cried out and they fled to safety;
^(I)In You they trusted and were not ^[f]disappointed.

⁶But I am a ^(J)worm and not a person,
A ^(K)disgrace of mankind and ^(L)despised by the people.
⁷All who see me ^(M)deride me;
They ^[g]sneer, they ^(N)shake their heads, saying,
⁸“^[h]Turn ^[i]him over to the Lord; ^(O)let Him save him;
Let Him rescue him, because He delights in him.”

⁹Yet You are He who ^(P)brought me forth from the womb;
You made me trust when upon my mother’s breasts.
¹⁰I was cast upon You ^(Q)from ^[j]birth;
You have been my God from my mother’s womb.

¹¹^(R)Do not be far from me, for ^[k]trouble is near;
For there is ^(S)no one to help.
¹²Many ^(T)bulls have surrounded me;
Strong bulls of ^(U)Bashan have encircled me.
¹³They ^(V)open their mouths wide at me,
As a ravening and roaring ^(W)lion.
¹⁴I am ^(X)poured out like water,
And all my ^(Y)bones are out of joint;
My ^(Z)heart is like wax;
It is melted within ^[l]me.
¹⁵My ^(AA)strength is dried up like a piece of pottery,
And ^(AB)my tongue clings to my jaws;
And You ^(AC)lay me ^[m]in the dust of death.
¹⁶For ^(AD)dogs have surrounded me;
^[n]A band of evildoers has encompassed me;
^[o]They ^(AE)pierced my hands and my feet.
¹⁷I can count all my bones.
^(AF)They look, they stare at me;
¹⁸They ^(AG)divide my garments among them,
And they cast lots for my clothing.

¹⁹But You, Lord, ^(AH)do not be far away;
You who are my help, ^(AI)hurry to my assistance.
²⁰Save my ^[p]soul from ^(AJ)the sword,
My ^(AK)only life from the ^[q]power of the dog.
²¹Save me from the ^(AL)lion’s mouth;
From the horns of the ^(AM)wild oxen You ^(AN)answer me.

²²I will ^(AO)proclaim Your name to my brothers;
In the midst of the assembly I will praise You.
²³^(AP)You who fear the Lord, praise Him;
All you ^[r]descendants of Jacob, ^(AQ)glorify Him,
And ^(AR)stand in awe of Him, all you ^[s]descendants of Israel.
²⁴For He has ^(AS)not despised nor scorned the suffering of the afflicted;
Nor has He ^(AT)hidden His face from him;
But ^(AU)when he cried to Him for help, He heard.

²⁵From You comes ^(AV)my praise in the great assembly;
I shall ^(AW)pay my vows before those who fear Him.
²⁶The ^[t]afflicted will eat and ^(AX)be satisfied;
Those who seek Him will ^(AY)praise the Lord.
May your ^(AZ)heart live forever!
²⁷All the ^(BA)ends of the earth will remember and turn to the Lord,
And all the ^(BB)families of the nations will worship before ^[u]You.
²⁸For the ^(BC)kingdom is the Lord’s
And He ^(BD)rules over the nations.
²⁹All the ^[v]^(BE)prosperous of the earth will eat and worship,
All those who ^(BF)go down to the dust will kneel before Him,
Even he who ^[w]^(BG)cannot keep his soul alive.
³⁰A ^[x]^(BH)posterity will serve Him;
It will be told of the Lord to ^(BI)the coming generation.
³¹They will come and ^(BJ)will declare His righteousness
To a people ^(BK)who will be born, that He has performed it.

The Whole Creation Invoked to Praise the Lord.

148 ^[a]Praise ^[b]the Lord!
Praise the Lord ^(A)from the heavens;
Praise Him ^(B)in the heights!
²Praise Him, ^(C)all His angels;
Praise Him, ^(D)all His heavenly armies!
³Praise Him, sun and moon;
Praise Him, all stars of light!
⁴Praise Him, ^[c]^(E)highest heavens,
And the ^(F)waters that are above the heavens!
⁵They are to praise the name of the Lord,
For ^(G)He commanded and they were created.
⁶He has also ^(H)established them forever and ever;
He has made a ^(I)decree, and it will not pass away.

⁷Praise the Lord from the earth,
^(J)Sea monsters, and all the ocean ^(K)depths;
⁸^(L)Fire and hail, ^(M)snow and ^(N)clouds;
^(O)Stormy wind, ^(P)fulfilling His word;
⁹^(Q)Mountains and all hills;
Fruit ^(R)trees and all cedars;

Rulers and all judges of the earth;

Old men and children.

¹³They are to praise the name of the Lord,
For His ^(V)name alone is exalted;
His ^(W)majesty is above earth and heaven.
¹⁴And He has ^(X)lifted up a horn for His people,
^(Y)Praise for all His godly ones,
For the sons of Israel, a people ^(Z)near to Him.

God Deals Justly with Individuals

18 Then the word of the Lord came to me, saying, ²“^(A)What do you people mean by using this proverb about the land of Israel, saying,

‘^(B)The fathers eat sour grapes,
^[a]But it is the children’s teeth that have become blunt’?

³As I live,” declares the Lord ^[b]God, “you certainly are not going to use this proverb in Israel anymore. ⁴Behold, ^(C)all ^[c]souls are Mine; the ^[d]soul of the father as well as the ^[e]soul of the son is Mine. The ^[f]soul who ^(D)sins will die.

²⁵Yet you say, ‘^(A)The way of the Lord is not right.’ Hear now, house of Israel! Is ^(B)My way not right? Is it not your ways that are not right? ²⁶When a righteous person turns away from his righteousness, commits injustice and dies because of it, for his injustice which he has committed he dies. ²⁷But when a wicked person turns away ^(C)from his wickedness which he has committed and practices justice and righteousness, he will save his life. ²⁸Since he understood and turned away from all his offenses which he had committed, he shall certainly live; he shall not die. ²⁹But the house of Israel says, ‘The way of the Lord is not right.’ Are My ways not right, house of Israel? Is it not your ways that are not right?

³⁰“Therefore I will judge you, house of Israel, each according to his conduct,” declares the Lord God. “^(D)Repent and turn away from all your offenses, so that wrongdoing does not become a stumbling block to you. ³¹^(E)Hurl away from you all your offenses which you have committed and make yourselves a ^(F)new heart and a new spirit! For why should you die, house of Israel? ³²For I take ^(G)no pleasure in the death of anyone who dies,” declares the Lord God. “Therefore, repent and live!”

4 Therefore, my beloved brothers and sisters, ^[a]whom I ^(A)long to see, my joy and crown, ^(B)stand firm in the Lord in this way, my beloved.

²I urge Euodia and I urge Syntyche to ^[b]^(C)live in harmony in the Lord. ³Indeed, true ^[c]companion, I ask you also, help these women who have shared my struggle in the cause of the gospel, together with Clement as well as the rest of my ^(D)fellow workers, whose ^(E)names are in the book of life.

⁴^(F)Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, rejoice! ⁵Let your gentle spirit be known to all people. ^(G)The Lord is ^[d]near. ⁶^(H)Do not ^[e]be anxious about anything, but in everything by ^(I)prayer and pleading with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. ⁷And ^(J)the peace of God, which surpasses all ^[f]comprehension, will ^(K)guard your hearts and ^(L)minds in ^(M)Christ Jesus.

⁸Finally, brothers and sisters, ^(N)whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is ^[g]lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence and if anything worthy of praise, think about these things. ⁹As for the things you have learned and received and heard and seen ^(O)in me, practice these things, and ^(P)the God of peace will be with you.

¹³But now ^(O)I am coming to You; and ^(P)these things I speak in the world so that they may have My ^(Q)joy made full in themselves. ¹⁴I have given them Your word; and ^(R)the world has hated them because ^(S)they are not of the world, just as I am not of the world. ¹⁵I am not asking You to take them out of the world, but to keep them away from ^[b]^(T)the evil one. ¹⁶^(U)They are not of the world, just as I am not of the world. ¹⁷^(V)Sanctify them in the truth; Your word is truth. ¹⁸Just as ^(W)You sent Me into the world, ^(X)I also sent them into the world. ¹⁹And for their sakes I ^(Y)sanctify Myself, so that they themselves also may be ^(Z)sanctified ^(AA)in truth.
