Trust in the Name of the Lord Our God

To the choirmaster. A Psalm of David.

20 May the Lord ^(A)answer you in the day of trouble!
    May ^(B)the name of the God of Jacob ^(C)protect you!
²May he send you help from ^(D)the sanctuary
    and give you support from ^(E)Zion!
³May he ^(F)remember all your offerings
    and regard with favor your burnt sacrifices! Selah

⁴May he ^(G)grant you your heart's desire
and fulfill all your plans!
⁵May we shout for joy over ^(H)your salvation,
and in the name of our God set up our ^(I)banners!
May the Lord fulfill all your petitions!

⁶Now I know that the Lord saves his anointed;
    he will answer him from his holy heaven
    with ^(J)the saving might of his right hand.
⁷Some trust in ^(K)chariots and some in ^(L)horses,
    ^(M)but we trust in the name of the Lord our God.
⁸They collapse and fall,
    but we rise and stand upright.

⁹O Lord, save ^(N)the king!
May he answer us when we call.

Psalm 21

The King Rejoices in the Lord's Strength

To the choirmaster. A Psalm of David.

21 O Lord, in your ^(A)strength the king rejoices,
    and in your ^(B)salvation how greatly he exults!
²You have ^(C)given him his heart's desire
    and have not withheld the request of his lips. Selah
³For you ^(D)meet him with rich blessings;
    you set ^(E)a crown of ^(F)fine gold upon his head.
⁴He asked life of you; you ^(G)gave it to him,
    ^(H)length of days forever and ever.
⁵His ^(I)glory is great through your salvation;
    ^(J)splendor and majesty you bestow on him.
⁶For you make him most blessed forever;^[a]
    you make him glad with the ^(K)joy of your presence.
⁷For the king trusts in the Lord,
    and through the steadfast love of the Most High he shall not be ^(L)moved.

⁸Your hand will ^(M)find out all your enemies;
    your right hand will find out those who hate you.
⁹You will make them as ^(N)a blazing oven
    when you appear.
The Lord will swallow them up in his ^(O)wrath,
    and ^(P)fire will consume them.
¹⁰You ^(Q)will destroy their ^(R)descendants from the earth,
    and their offspring from among the children of man.
¹¹Though they plan evil against you,
    though they ^(S)devise mischief, they will not succeed.
¹²For you will put them ^(T)to flight;
    you will ^(U)aim at their faces with your bows.

¹³Be exalted, O Lord, in your strength!
We will sing and praise your power.

Elihu Proclaims God's Majesty

37 “At this also my heart trembles
    and leaps out of its place.
²Keep listening to the thunder of his voice
    and the rumbling that comes from his mouth.
³Under the whole heaven he lets it go,
    and his ^(A)lightning to the ^(B)corners of the earth.
⁴After it ^(C)his voice roars;
    ^(D)he thunders with his majestic voice,
    and he does not restrain the lightnings^[a] when his voice is heard.
⁵God thunders wondrously with his voice;
    he does ^(E)great things that we cannot ^(F)comprehend.
⁶For to ^(G)the snow he says, ‘Fall on the earth,’
    likewise to the downpour, his mighty downpour.
⁷He ^(H)seals up the hand of every man,
    that all men whom he made may ^(I)know it.
⁸Then the beasts go into their ^(J)lairs,
    and remain in their ^(K)dens.
⁹From ^(L)its chamber ^(M)comes the whirlwind,
    and ^(N)cold from the scattering winds.
¹⁰By the breath of God ^(O)ice is given,
    and ^(P)the broad waters are frozen fast.
¹¹He loads the thick cloud with moisture;
    the clouds scatter his lightning.
¹²They ^(Q)turn around and around by his ^(R)guidance,
    ^(S)to accomplish all that he commands them
    on the face of ^(T)the habitable world.
¹³Whether for ^(U)correction or for his ^(V)land
    or for ^(W)love, he causes it to happen.

¹⁴“Hear this, O Job;
    stop and ^(X)consider the wondrous works of God.
¹⁵Do you know how God lays his command upon them
    and causes the lightning of his cloud to shine?
¹⁶Do you know the balancings^[b] of the clouds,
    the wondrous works of him who is ^(Y)perfect in knowledge,
¹⁷you whose garments are hot
    when the earth is still because of the south wind?
¹⁸Can you, like him, ^(Z)spread out the skies,
    hard as a cast metal ^(AA)mirror?
¹⁹Teach us what we shall say to him;
    we cannot draw up our case because of ^(AB)darkness.
²⁰Shall it be told him that I would speak?
    Did a man ever wish that he would be swallowed up?

²¹“And now no one looks on the light
    when it is bright in the skies,
    when the wind has passed and cleared them.
²²Out of the north comes golden splendor;
    God is clothed with ^(AC)awesome majesty.
²³The Almighty—we ^(AD)cannot find him;
    he is ^(AE)great in power;
    ^(AF)justice and abundant righteousness he will not ^(AG)violate.
²⁴Therefore men ^(AH)fear him;
    he does not regard any who are ^(AI)wise in their own conceit.”^[c]

Greeting

1 Simeon^[a] Peter, a servant^[b] and apostle of Jesus Christ,

To those who have obtained ^(A)a faith of equal standing with ours ^(B)by the righteousness of our ^(C)God and Savior Jesus Christ:

²^(D)May grace and peace be multiplied to you ^(E)in the knowledge of God and of Jesus our Lord.

Confirm Your Calling and Election

³His divine power has granted to us all things that pertain to life and godliness, through the knowledge of him ^(F)who called us to^[c] his own glory and excellence,^[d] ⁴by which he has granted to us his precious and very great promises, so that through them you may become ^(G)partakers of the divine nature, ^(H)having escaped from the corruption that is in the world because of sinful desire. ⁵For this very reason, make every effort to supplement your faith ^(I)with virtue,^[e] and virtue ^(J)with knowledge, ⁶and knowledge with self-control, and self-control ^(K)with steadfastness, and steadfastness with godliness, ⁷and godliness ^(L)with brotherly affection, and brotherly affection ^(M)with love. ⁸For if these qualities^[f] are yours and are increasing, they keep you from being ineffective or ^(N)unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ. ⁹For whoever lacks these qualities is so nearsighted that he ^(O)is blind, having forgotten that he was ^(P)cleansed from his former sins. ¹⁰Therefore, brothers,^[g] be all the more diligent to confirm your calling and ^(Q)election, for if you practice these qualities ^(R)you will never fall. ¹¹For in this way there will be richly provided for you ^(S)an entrance into the eternal kingdom of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

¹²Therefore I intend ^(T)always to remind you of these qualities, though you know them and are established in ^(U)the truth that you have. ¹³I think it right, as long as I am in this ^(V)body,^[h] ^(W)to stir you up by way of reminder, ¹⁴^(X)since I know that the putting off of my body will be soon, ^(Y)as our Lord Jesus Christ made clear to me. ¹⁵And I will make every effort so that after my departure you may be able at any time to recall these things.

Christ's Glory and the Prophetic Word

¹⁶For we did not follow ^(Z)cleverly devised ^(AA)myths when we made known to you ^(AB)the power and ^(AC)coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, but ^(AD)we were eyewitnesses of his majesty. ¹⁷For when he received honor and glory from God the Father, and the voice was borne to him by the Majestic Glory, ^(AE)“This is my beloved Son,^[i] with whom I am well pleased,” ¹⁸we ourselves heard this very voice borne from heaven, for we were with him on ^(AF)the holy mountain. ¹⁹And ^(AG)we have the prophetic word more fully confirmed, to which you will do well to pay attention ^(AH)as to a lamp shining in a dark place, until ^(AI)the day ^(AJ)dawns and the morning star rises in your hearts, ²⁰knowing this first of all, that no prophecy of Scripture comes from someone's own interpretation. ²¹For ^(AK)no prophecy was ever produced by the will of man, but men spoke from God ^(AL)as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit.
