A Psalm of Praise.

150 [a]Praise [b]the Lord!
Praise God in His (A)sanctuary;
Praise Him in His mighty [c](B)expanse.
Praise Him for His (C)mighty deeds;
Praise Him according to His excellent (D)greatness.

Praise Him with (E)trumpet sound;
Praise Him with (F)harp and lyre.
Praise Him with (G)timbrel and dancing;
Praise Him with (H)stringed instruments and (I)pipe.
Praise Him with loud (J)cymbals;
Praise Him with resounding cymbals.
Let (K)everything that has breath praise [d]the Lord.
[e]Praise [f]the Lord!

The Usefulness of Proverbs

The (A)proverbs of Solomon (B)the son of David, king of Israel:

To know (C)wisdom and instruction,
To discern the sayings of (D)understanding,
To (E)receive instruction in wise behavior,
(F)Righteousness, justice and equity;
To give (G)prudence to the [a]naive,
To the youth (H)knowledge and discretion,
A wise man will hear and (I)increase in learning,
And a (J)man of understanding will acquire wise counsel,
To understand a proverb and a figure,
The words of the wise and their (K)riddles.

(L)The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge;
Fools despise wisdom and instruction.

The Enticement of Sinners

(M)Hear, my son, your father’s instruction
And (N)do not forsake your mother’s teaching;
Indeed, they are a (O)graceful wreath to your head
And [b](P)ornaments about your neck.
10 My son, if sinners (Q)entice you,
(R)Do not consent.
11 If they say, “Come with us,
Let us (S)lie in wait for blood,
Let us (T)ambush the innocent without cause;
12 Let us (U)swallow them alive like Sheol,
Even whole, as those who (V)go down to the pit;
13 We will find all kinds of precious wealth,
We will fill our houses with spoil;
14 Throw in your lot [c]with us,
We shall all have one purse,”
15 My son, (W)do not walk in the way with them.
(X)Keep your feet from their path,
16 For (Y)their feet run to evil
And they hasten to shed blood.
17 Indeed, it is [d]useless to spread the baited net
In the sight of any [e]bird;
18 But they (Z)lie in wait for their own blood;
They ambush their own lives.
19 So are the ways of everyone who (AA)gains by violence;
It takes away the life of its possessors.

Wisdom Warns

20 (AB)Wisdom shouts in the street,
She [f]lifts her voice in the square;
21 At the head of the noisy streets she cries out;
At the entrance of the gates in the city she utters her sayings:
22 “How long, O [g](AC)naive ones, will you love [h]being simple-minded?
And (AD)scoffers delight themselves in scoffing
And fools (AE)hate knowledge?
23 “Turn to my reproof,
Behold, I will (AF)pour out my spirit on you;
I will make my words known to you.
24 “Because (AG)I called and you (AH)refused,
I (AI)stretched out my hand and no one paid attention;
25 And you (AJ)neglected all my counsel
And did not (AK)want my reproof;
26 I will also (AL)laugh at your (AM)calamity;
I will mock when your (AN)dread comes,
27 When your dread comes like a storm
And your calamity comes like a (AO)whirlwind,
When distress and anguish come upon you.
28 “Then they will (AP)call on me, but I will not answer;
They will (AQ)seek me diligently but they will not find me,
29 Because they (AR)hated knowledge
And did not choose the fear of the Lord.
30 “They (AS)would not accept my counsel,
They spurned all my reproof.
31 “So they shall (AT)eat of the fruit of their own way
And be (AU)satiated with their own devices.
32 “For the (AV)waywardness of the [i]naive will kill them,
And the complacency of fools will destroy them.
33 “But (AW)he who listens to me shall [j]live securely
And will be at ease from the dread of evil.”

The Pursuit of Wisdom Brings Security

My son, if you will (AX)receive my words
And (AY)treasure my commandments within you,
(AZ)Make your ear attentive to wisdom,
Incline your heart to understanding;
For if you cry for discernment,
[k]Lift your voice for understanding;
If you seek her as (BA)silver
And search for her as for (BB)hidden treasures;
Then you will discern the (BC)fear of the Lord
And discover the knowledge of God.
For (BD)the Lord gives wisdom;
From His mouth come knowledge and understanding.
He stores up sound wisdom for the upright;
He is a (BE)shield to those who walk in integrity,
Guarding the paths of justice,
And He (BF)preserves the way of His godly ones.
Then you will discern (BG)righteousness and justice
And equity and every (BH)good course.
10 For (BI)wisdom will enter your heart
And (BJ)knowledge will be pleasant to your soul;
11 Discretion will (BK)guard you,
Understanding will watch over you,
12 To (BL)deliver you from the way of evil,
From the man who speaks (BM)perverse things;
13 From those who (BN)leave the paths of uprightness
To walk in the (BO)ways of darkness;
14 Who (BP)delight in doing evil
And rejoice in the perversity of evil;
15 Whose paths are (BQ)crooked,
And who are devious in their ways;
16 To (BR)deliver you from the strange woman,
From the [l](BS)adulteress who flatters with her words;
17 That leaves the (BT)companion of her youth
And forgets the (BU)covenant of her God;
18 For (BV)her house [m]sinks down to death
And her tracks lead to the [n]dead;
19 None (BW)who go to her return again,
Nor do they reach the (BX)paths of life.
20 So you will (BY)walk in the way of good men
And keep to the (BZ)paths of the righteous.
21 For (CA)the upright will [o]live in the land
And (CB)the blameless will remain in it;
22 But (CC)the wicked will be cut off from the land
And (CD)the treacherous will be (CE)uprooted from it.

Melchizedek’s Priesthood Like Christ’s

For this (A)Melchizedek, king of Salem, priest of the (B)Most High God, who met Abraham as he was returning from the slaughter of the kings and blessed him, to whom also Abraham apportioned a tenth part of all the spoils, was first of all, by the translation of his name, king of righteousness, and then also king of Salem, which is king of peace. Without father, without mother, (C)without genealogy, having neither beginning of days nor end of life, but made like (D)the Son of God, he remains a priest perpetually.

Now observe how great this man was to whom Abraham, the (E)patriarch, (F)gave a tenth of the choicest spoils. And those indeed of (G)the sons of Levi who receive the priest’s office have commandment [a]in the Law to collect [b]a tenth from the people, that is, from their brethren, although these [c]are descended from Abraham. But the one (H)whose genealogy is not traced from them (I)collected [d]a tenth from Abraham and [e](J)blessed the one who (K)had the promises. But without any dispute the lesser is blessed by the greater. In this case mortal men receive tithes, but in that case one receives them, (L)of whom it is witnessed that he lives on. And, so to speak, through Abraham even Levi, who received tithes, paid tithes, 10 for he was still in the loins of his father when Melchizedek met him.

11 (M)Now if perfection was through the Levitical priesthood (for on the basis of it (N)the people received the Law), what further need was there for another priest to arise (O)according to the order of Melchizedek, and not be designated according to the order of Aaron? 12 For when the priesthood is changed, of necessity there takes place a change of law also. 13 For (P)the one concerning whom (Q)these things are spoken belongs to another tribe, from which no one has officiated at the altar. 14 For it is evident that our Lord [f]was (R)descended from Judah, a tribe with reference to which Moses spoke nothing concerning priests. 15 And this is clearer still, if another priest arises according to the likeness of Melchizedek, 16 who has become such not on the basis of a law of [g](S)physical requirement, but according to the power of (T)an indestructible life. 17 For it is attested of Him,

(U)You are a priest forever
According to the order of Melchizedek.”

18 For, on the one hand, there is a setting aside of a former commandment (V)because of its weakness and uselessness 19 (for (W)the Law made nothing perfect), and on the other hand there is a bringing in of a better (X)hope, through which we (Y)draw near to God. 20 And inasmuch as it was not without an oath 21 (for they indeed became priests without an oath, but He with an oath through the One who said to Him,

(Z)The Lord has sworn
And (AA)will not change His mind,
You are a priest (AB)forever’”);

22 so much the more also Jesus has become the (AC)guarantee of (AD)a better covenant.

23 [h]The former priests, on the one hand, existed in greater numbers because they were prevented by death from continuing, 24 but Jesus, on the other hand, because He continues (AE)forever, holds His priesthood permanently. 25 Therefore He is able also to (AF)save [i]forever those who (AG)draw near to God through Him, since He always lives to (AH)make intercession for them.

26 For it was fitting for us to have such a (AI)high priest, (AJ)holy, (AK)innocent, undefiled, separated from sinners and (AL)exalted above the heavens; 27 who does not need daily, like those high priests, to (AM)offer up sacrifices, (AN)first for His own sins and then for the sins of the people, because this He did (AO)once for all when He (AP)offered up Himself. 28 For the Law appoints men as high priests (AQ)who are weak, but the word of the oath, which came after the Law, appoints (AR)a Son, (AS)made perfect forever.
