Give Ear to My Voice

A Psalm of David.

141 O Lord, I call upon you; ^(A)hasten to me!
Give ear to my voice when I call to you!
²Let ^(B)my prayer be counted as incense before you,
and ^(C)the lifting up of my hands as ^(D)the evening sacrifice!

³^(E)Set a guard, O Lord, over my mouth;
    ^(F)keep watch over the door of my lips!
⁴^(G)Do not let my heart incline to any evil,
    to busy myself with wicked deeds
in company with men who ^(H)work iniquity,
    and ^(I)let me not eat of their delicacies!

⁵^(J)Let a righteous man strike me—it is a kindness;
    let him rebuke me—it is oil for my head;
    let my head not refuse it.
Yet ^(K)my prayer is continually against their evil deeds.
⁶When their judges are ^(L)thrown over the cliff,^[a]
    then they shall hear my words, for they are pleasant.
⁷As when one plows and breaks up the earth,
    so shall our bones ^(M)be scattered at the mouth of Sheol.^[b]

⁸But ^(N)my eyes are toward you, O God, my Lord;
    ^(O)in you I seek refuge; leave me not defenseless!^[c]
⁹Keep me from ^(P)the trap that they have laid for me
    and from the snares of evildoers!
¹⁰Let the wicked ^(Q)fall into their own nets,
    while I pass by safely.

Balaam's Third Oracle

24 When Balaam saw that it pleased the Lord to bless Israel, he did not go, as at ^(A)other times, to look for omens, but set his face toward the wilderness. ²And Balaam lifted up his eyes and saw Israel ^(B)camping tribe by tribe. And ^(C)the Spirit of God came upon him, ³and he ^(D)took up his discourse and said,

“The oracle of Balaam the son of Beor,
    the oracle of the man whose eye is opened,^[a]
⁴the oracle of him who hears the words of God,
    who sees the vision of the Almighty,
    ^(E)falling down with his eyes uncovered:
⁵How lovely are your tents, O Jacob,
    your encampments, O Israel!
⁶Like palm groves^[b] that stretch afar,
    like gardens beside a river,
^(F)like aloes ^(G)that the Lord has planted,
    like cedar trees beside the waters.
⁷Water shall flow from his buckets,
    and his seed shall be ^(H)in many waters;
his king shall be higher than ^(I)Agag,
    and ^(J)his kingdom shall be exalted.
⁸God brings him out of Egypt
    and is for him like the ^(K)horns of the wild ox;
he shall ^(L)eat up the nations, his adversaries,
    and shall ^(M)break their bones in pieces
    and ^(N)pierce them through with his arrows.
⁹He crouched, he lay down like a lion
    and ^(O)like a lioness; who will rouse him up?
^(P)Blessed are those who bless you,
    and cursed are those who curse you.”

¹⁰And Balak's anger was kindled against Balaam, and he ^(Q)struck his hands together. And Balak said to Balaam, ^(R)“I called you to curse my enemies, and behold, you have blessed them these three times. ¹¹Therefore now flee to your own place. I said, ^(S)‘I will certainly honor you,’ but the Lord has held you back from honor.” ¹²And Balaam said to Balak, “Did I not tell your messengers whom you sent to me, ¹³^(T)‘If Balak should give me his house full of silver and gold, I would not be able to go beyond the word of the Lord, to do either good or bad ^(U)of my own will. What the Lord speaks, that will I speak’? ¹⁴And now, behold, I am going to my people. Come, ^(V)I will let you know what this people will do to your people ^(W)in the latter days.”

Balaam's Final Oracle

¹⁵^(X)And he took up his discourse and said,

“The oracle of Balaam the son of Beor,
    the oracle of the man whose eye is opened,
¹⁶the oracle of him who hears the words of God,
    and knows the knowledge of ^(Y)the Most High,
who sees the vision of the Almighty,
    ^(Z)falling down with his eyes uncovered:
¹⁷^(AA)I see him, but not now;
    I behold him, but not near:
^(AB)a star shall come out of Jacob,
    and ^(AC)a scepter shall rise out of Israel;
it shall ^(AD)crush the forehead^[c] of Moab
    and break down all the sons of Sheth.
¹⁸^(AE)Edom shall be dispossessed;
    ^(AF)Seir also, his enemies, shall be dispossessed.
    Israel is doing valiantly.
¹⁹And one from Jacob shall exercise dominion
    and destroy the survivors of cities!”

²⁰Then he looked on Amalek and ^(AG)took up his discourse and said,

“Amalek was the first among the nations,
^(AH)but its end is utter destruction.”

²¹And he looked on the Kenite, and took up his discourse and said,

“Enduring is your dwelling place,
and your nest is set in the rock.
²²Nevertheless, Kain shall be burned
when Asshur takes you away captive.”

²³And he took up his discourse and said,

“Alas, who shall live when God does this?
²⁴ But ships shall come from ^(AI)Kittim
and shall afflict Asshur and ^(AJ)Eber;
and he too ^(AK)shall come to utter destruction.”

²⁵Then Balaam rose and ^(AL)went back to his place. And Balak also went his way.

The Parable of the Prodigal Son

¹¹And he said, “There was a man who had two sons. ¹²And the younger of them said to his father, ‘Father, give me ^(A)the share of property that is coming to me.’ And he divided ^(B)his property between them. ¹³Not many days later, the younger son gathered all he had and took a journey into a far country, and there he squandered his property in ^(C)reckless living. ¹⁴And when he had spent everything, a severe famine arose in that country, and he began to be in need. ¹⁵So he went and hired himself out to^[a] one of the citizens of that country, who sent him into his fields to feed pigs. ¹⁶And he ^(D)was longing to be fed with the pods that the pigs ate, and no one gave him anything.

¹⁷“But ^(E)when he ^(F)came to himself, he said, ‘How many of my father's hired servants have more than enough bread, but I perish here with hunger! ¹⁸I will arise and go to my father, and I will say to him, “Father, ^(G)I have sinned against ^(H)heaven and before you. ¹⁹^(I)I am no longer worthy to be called your son. Treat me as one of your hired servants.”’ ²⁰And he arose and came to his father. But while he was still a long way off, his father saw him and felt compassion, and ^(J)ran and ^(K)embraced him and ^(L)kissed him. ²¹And the son said to him, ‘Father, I have sinned against heaven and before you. ^(M)I am no longer worthy to be called your son.’^[b] ²²But the father said to his servants,^[c] ‘Bring quickly ^(N)the best robe, and put it on him, and put ^(O)a ring on his hand, and ^(P)shoes on his feet. ²³And bring ^(Q)the fattened calf and kill it, and ^(R)let us eat and celebrate. ²⁴For this my son ^(S)was dead, and is alive again; he was lost, and is found.’ And they began to celebrate.

²⁵“Now his older son was in the field, and as he came and drew near to the house, he heard music and dancing. ²⁶And he called one of the servants and asked what these things meant. ²⁷And he said to him, ‘Your brother has come, and your father has killed the fattened calf, because he has received him back safe and sound.’ ²⁸But he was angry and refused to go in. His father came out and entreated him, ²⁹but he answered his father, ‘Look, these many years I have served you, and I never disobeyed your command, yet you never gave me a young goat, that I might ^(T)celebrate with my friends. ³⁰But when this son of yours came, ^(U)who has devoured ^(V)your property with prostitutes, you killed the fattened calf for him!’ ³¹And he said to him, ‘Son, ^(W)you are always with me, and all that is mine is yours. ³²It was fitting ^(X)to celebrate and be glad, for this your brother ^(Y)was dead, and is alive; he was lost, and is found.’”
