Thanksgiving for the Lord’s Favor.

A Psalm of David.

138 (A)I will give You thanks with all my heart;
I will sing praises to You before the (B)gods.
I will bow down (C)toward Your holy temple
And (D)give thanks to Your name for Your lovingkindness and Your [a]truth;
For You have (E)magnified Your [b]word [c]according to all Your name.
On the day I (F)called, You answered me;
You made me bold with (G)strength in my soul.

(H)All the kings of the earth will give thanks to You, O Lord,
When they have heard the words of Your mouth.
And they will (I)sing of the ways of the Lord,
For (J)great is the glory of the Lord.
For (K)though the Lord is exalted,
Yet He (L)regards the lowly,
But the (M)haughty He knows from afar.

Though I (N)walk in the midst of trouble, You will [d](O)revive me;
You will (P)stretch forth Your hand against the wrath of my enemies,
And Your right hand will (Q)save me.
The Lord will (R)accomplish what concerns me;
Your (S)lovingkindness, O Lord, is everlasting;
(T)Do not forsake the (U)works of Your hands.

God’s Omnipresence and Omniscience.

For the choir director. A Psalm of David.

139 O Lord, You have (V)searched me and known me.
You (W)know [e]when I sit down and [f]when I rise up;
You (X)understand my thought from afar.
You [g](Y)scrutinize my [h]path and my lying down,
And are intimately acquainted with all my ways.
[i]Even before there is a word on my tongue,
Behold, O Lord, You (Z)know it all.
You have (AA)enclosed me behind and before,
And (AB)laid Your hand upon me.
Such (AC)knowledge is (AD)too wonderful for me;
It is too high, I cannot attain to it.

(AE)Where can I go from Your Spirit?
Or where can I flee from Your presence?
(AF)If I ascend to heaven, You are there;
If I make my bed in [j]Sheol, behold, (AG)You are there.
If I take the wings of the dawn,
If I dwell in the remotest part of the sea,
10 Even there Your hand will (AH)lead me,
And Your right hand will lay hold of me.
11 If I say, “Surely the (AI)darkness will [k]overwhelm me,
And the light around me will be night,”
12 Even the (AJ)darkness is not dark [l]to You,
And the night is as bright as the day.
(AK)Darkness and light are alike to You.

13 For You (AL)formed my [m]inward parts;
You (AM)wove me in my mother’s womb.
14 I will give thanks to You, for [n]I am fearfully and wonderfully made;
(AN)Wonderful are Your works,
And my soul knows it very well.
15 My [o](AO)frame was not hidden from You,
When I was made in secret,
And skillfully wrought in the (AP)depths of the earth;
16 Your (AQ)eyes have seen my unformed substance;
And in (AR)Your book were all written
The (AS)days that were ordained for me,
When as yet there was not one of them.

17 How precious also are Your (AT)thoughts to me, O God!
How vast is the sum of them!
18 If I should count them, they would (AU)outnumber the sand.
When (AV)I awake, I am still with You.

19 O that You would (AW)slay the wicked, O God;
(AX)Depart from me, therefore, (AY)men of bloodshed.
20 For they (AZ)speak [p]against You wickedly,
And Your enemies [q](BA)take Your name in vain.
21 Do I not (BB)hate those who hate You, O Lord?
And do I not (BC)loathe those who rise up against You?
22 I hate them with the utmost hatred;
They have become my enemies.

23 (BD)Search me, O God, and know my heart;
(BE)Try me and know my anxious thoughts;
24 And see if there be any [r](BF)hurtful way in me,
And (BG)lead me in the (BH)everlasting way.

Prayer for Protection against the Wicked.

For the choir director. A Psalm of David.

140 (BI)Rescue me, O Lord, from evil men;
Preserve me from (BJ)violent men
Who (BK)devise evil things in their hearts;
They (BL)continually stir up wars.
They (BM)sharpen their tongues as a serpent;
(BN)Poison of a viper is under their lips. [s]Selah.

(BO)Keep me, O Lord, from the hands of the wicked;
(BP)Preserve me from violent men
Who have [t]purposed to [u](BQ)trip up my feet.
The proud have (BR)hidden a trap for me, and cords;
They have spread a (BS)net by the [v]wayside;
They have set (BT)snares for me. Selah.

I (BU)said to the Lord, “You are my God;
(BV)Give ear, O Lord, to the (BW)voice of my supplications.
“O [w]God the Lord, (BX)the strength of my salvation,
You have (BY)covered my head in the day of [x]battle.
“Do not grant, O Lord, the (BZ)desires of the wicked;
Do not promote (CA)his evil device, that they not be exalted. Selah.

“As for the head of those who surround me,
May the (CB)mischief of their lips cover them.
10 “May (CC)burning coals fall upon them;
May they be (CD)cast into the fire,
Into [y]deep pits from which they (CE)cannot rise.
11 “May a [z]slanderer not be established in the earth;
(CF)May evil hunt the violent man [aa]speedily.”

12 I know that the Lord will (CG)maintain the cause of the afflicted
And (CH)justice for the poor.
13 Surely the (CI)righteous will give thanks to Your name;
The (CJ)upright will dwell in Your presence.

Jesus Our High Priest

Therefore, (A)holy brethren, partakers of a (B)heavenly calling, consider Jesus, (C)the Apostle and (D)High Priest of our (E)confession; [a]He was faithful to Him who appointed Him, as (F)Moses also was in all His house. (G)For He has been counted worthy of more glory than Moses, by just so much as the builder of the house has more honor than the house. For every house is built by someone, but the builder of all things is God. Now (H)Moses was faithful in all His house as (I)a servant, (J)for a testimony of those things (K)which were to be spoken later; but Christ was faithful as (L)a Son over His house—(M)whose house we are, (N)if we hold fast our (O)confidence and the boast of our (P)hope firm until the end.

Therefore, just as (Q)the Holy Spirit says,

(R)Today if you hear His voice,
(S)Do not harden your hearts as [b]when they provoked Me,
As in the day of trial in the wilderness,
(T)Where your fathers tried Me by testing Me,
And saw My works for (U)forty years.
10 (V)Therefore I was angry with this generation,
And said, ‘They always go astray in their heart,
And they did not know My ways’;
11 (W)As I swore in My wrath,
They shall not enter My rest.’”

The Peril of Unbelief

12 (X)Take care, brethren, that there not be in any one of you an evil, unbelieving heart [c]that falls away from (Y)the living God. 13 But (Z)encourage one another day after day, as long as it is still called “Today,” so that none of you will be hardened by the (AA)deceitfulness of sin. 14 For we have become partakers of Christ, (AB)if we hold fast the beginning of our (AC)assurance firm until the end, 15 while it is said,

(AD)Today if you hear His voice,
Do not harden your hearts, as [d]when they provoked Me.”

16 For who (AE)provoked Him when they had heard? Indeed, (AF)did not all those who came out of Egypt led by Moses? 17 And with whom was He angry for forty years? Was it not with those who sinned, (AG)whose bodies fell in the wilderness? 18 And to whom did He swear (AH)that they would not enter His rest, but to those who were (AI)disobedient? 19 So we see that they were not able to enter because of (AJ)unbelief.
