Psalm 132

David and Zion Chosen

A song of ascents.

Lord, remember David
and all the hardships he endured,(A)
and how he swore an oath to the Lord,
making a vow to the Mighty One of Jacob:(B)
“I will not enter my house
or get into my bed,
I will not allow my eyes to sleep
or my eyelids to slumber(C)
until I find a place for the Lord,
a dwelling for the Mighty One of Jacob.”(D)

We heard of the ark in Ephrathah;[a](E)
we found it in the fields of Jaar.[b](F)
Let’s go to his dwelling place;
let’s worship at his footstool.(G)
Rise up, Lord, come to your resting place,
you and your powerful ark.(H)
May your priests be clothed with righteousness,
and may your faithful people shout for joy.(I)
10 For the sake of your servant David,
do not reject your anointed one.[c](J)

11 The Lord swore an oath to David,
a promise he will not abandon:
“I will set one of your offspring[d]
on your throne.(K)
12 If your sons keep my covenant
and my decrees that I will teach them,
their sons will also sit on your throne forever.”(L)

13 For the Lord has chosen Zion;
he has desired it for his home:(M)
14 “This is my resting place forever;
I will make my home here
because I have desired it.(N)
15 I will abundantly bless its food;
I will satisfy its needy with bread.(O)
16 I will clothe its priests with salvation,
and its faithful people will shout for joy.(P)
17 There I will make a horn grow for David;(Q)
I have prepared a lamp[e] for my anointed one.(R)
18 I will clothe his enemies with shame,(S)
but the crown he wears[f] will be glorious.”(T)

Psalm 133

Living in Harmony

A song of ascents. Of David.

How delightfully good
when brothers live together in harmony!(U)
It is like fine oil on the head,
running down on the beard,
running down Aaron’s beard
onto his robes.(V)
It is like the dew of Hermon[g]
falling on the mountains of Zion.(W)
For there the Lord has appointed the blessing—
life forevermore.(X)

Psalm 134

Call to Evening Worship

A song of ascents.

Now bless the Lord,
all you servants of the Lord
who stand in the Lord’s house at night!(Y)
Lift up your hands in the holy place
and bless the Lord!(Z)

May the Lord,
Maker of heaven and earth,
bless you from Zion.(AA)

our Lord is greater than all gods.(AF)
The Lord does whatever he pleases
in heaven and on earth,

He causes the clouds to rise from the ends of the earth.
He makes lightning for the rain
and brings the wind from his storehouses.(AH)

He struck down the firstborn of Egypt,
both people and animals.(AI)
He sent signs and wonders against you, Egypt,
against Pharaoh and all his officials.(AJ)
10 He struck down many nations
and slaughtered mighty kings:(AK)
11 Sihon king of the Amorites,
Og king of Bashan,
and all the kings of Canaan.(AL)
12 He gave their land as an inheritance,
an inheritance to his people Israel.(AM)

13 Lord, your name endures forever,
your reputation, Lord,
through all generations.(AN)
14 For the Lord will vindicate his people
and have compassion on his servants.(AO)

15 The idols of the nations are of silver and gold,
made by human hands.(AP)
16 They have mouths but cannot speak,(AQ)
eyes, but cannot see.
17 They have ears but cannot hear;
indeed, there is no breath in their mouths.(AR)
18 Those who make them are just like them,
as are all who trust in them.(AS)

19 House of Israel, bless the Lord!(AT)
House of Aaron, bless the Lord!(AU)
20 House of Levi, bless the Lord!
You who revere the Lord, bless the Lord!(AV)
21 Blessed be the Lord from Zion;(AW)
he dwells in Jerusalem.(AX)
Hallelujah!

Psalm 137

Lament of the Exiles

By the rivers of Babylon—
there we sat down and wept
when we remembered Zion.(BQ)
There we hung up our lyres
on the poplar trees,(BR)
for our captors there asked us for songs,
and our tormentors, for rejoicing:
“Sing us one of the songs of Zion.”(BS)

How can we sing the Lord’s song
on foreign soil?(BT)
If I forget you, Jerusalem,
may my right hand forget its skill.(BU)
May my tongue stick to the roof of my mouth
if I do not remember you,
if I do not exalt Jerusalem as my greatest joy!(BV)

Remember, Lord, what the Edomites said
that day[h] at Jerusalem:
“Destroy it! Destroy it
down to its foundations!” (BW)
Daughter Babylon, doomed to destruction,
happy is the one who pays you back
what you have done to us.(BX)
Happy is he who takes your little ones
and dashes them against the rocks.(BY)

Psalm 138

A Thankful Heart

Of David.

I will give you thanks with all my heart;(BZ)
I will sing your praise before the heavenly beings.[i](CA)
I will bow down toward your holy temple
and give thanks to your name
for your constant love and truth.
You have exalted your name
and your promise above everything else.[j](CB)
On the day I called, you answered me;
you increased strength within me.[k](CC)

All the kings on earth will give you thanks, Lord,
when they hear what you have promised.[l](CD)
They will sing of the Lord’s ways,
for the Lord’s glory is great.(CE)
Though the Lord is exalted,
he takes note of the humble;
but he knows the haughty from a distance.(CF)

If I walk into the thick of danger,
you will preserve my life
from the anger of my enemies.(CG)
You will extend your hand;
your right hand will save me.(CH)
The Lord will fulfill his purpose for me.(CI)
Lord, your faithful love endures forever;
do not abandon the work of your hands.(CJ)

Psalm 139

The All-Knowing, Ever-Present God

For the choir director. A psalm of David.

Lord, you have searched me and known me.(CK)
You know when I sit down and when I stand up;
you understand my thoughts from far away.(CL)
You observe my travels and my rest;
you are aware of all my ways.(CM)
Before a word is on my tongue,
you know all about it, Lord.(CN)
You have encircled me;
you have placed your hand on me.(CO)
This wondrous knowledge is beyond me.
It is lofty; I am unable to reach it.(CP)

Where can I go to escape your Spirit?
Where can I flee from your presence?(CQ)
If I go up to heaven, you are there;(CR)
if I make my bed in Sheol, you are there.(CS)
If I fly on the wings of the dawn
and settle down on the western horizon,[m]
10 even there your hand will lead me;
your right hand will hold on to me.(CT)
11 If I say, “Surely the darkness will hide me,
and the light around me will be night”(CU)
12 even the darkness is not dark to you.
The night shines like the day;
darkness and light are alike to you.(CV)

13 For it was you who created my inward parts;[n]
you knit me together in my mother’s womb.(CW)
14 I will praise you
because I have been remarkably and wondrously made.[o][p]
Your works are wondrous,
and I know this very well.(CX)
15 My bones were not hidden from you
when I was made in secret,
when I was formed in the depths of the earth.(CY)
16 Your eyes saw me when I was formless;
all my days were written in your book and planned
before a single one of them began.(CZ)

17 God, how precious[q] your thoughts are to me;
how vast their sum is!
18 If I counted them,
they would outnumber the grains of sand;(DA)
when I wake up,[r] I am still with you.(DB)

19 God, if only you would kill the wicked—
you bloodthirsty men, stay away from me(DC)
20 who invoke you deceitfully.
Your enemies swear by you falsely.(DD)
21 Lord, don’t I hate those who hate you,
and detest those who rebel against you?
22 I hate them with extreme hatred;
I consider them my enemies.(DE)

23 Search me, God, and know my heart;
test me and know my concerns.(DF)
24 See if there is any offensive[s] way in me;
lead me in the everlasting way.(DG)

Psalm 140

Prayer for Rescue

For the choir director. A psalm of David.

Rescue me, Lord, from evil men.
Keep me safe from violent men(DH)
who plan evil in their hearts.
They stir up wars all day long.(DI)
They make their tongues
as sharp as a snake’s bite;
viper’s venom is under their lips.(DJ)Selah

Protect me, Lord,
from the power of the wicked.(DK)
Keep me safe from violent men
who plan to make me stumble.[t](DL)
The proud hide a trap with ropes for me;
they spread a net along the path
and set snares for me.(DM)Selah

I say to the Lord, “You are my God.”
Listen, Lord, to my cry for help.(DN)
Lord, my Lord, my strong Savior,
you shield my head on the day of battle.(DO)
Lord, do not grant the desires of the wicked;
do not let them achieve their goals.
Otherwise, they will become proud.(DP)Selah

When those who surround me rise up,[u]
may the trouble their lips cause overwhelm them.(DQ)
10 Let hot coals fall on them.
Let them be thrown into the fire,
into the abyss, never again to rise.(DR)
11 Do not let a slanderer stay in the land.
Let evil relentlessly[v] hunt down a violent man.(DS)

12 I[w] know that the Lord upholds
the just cause of the poor,
justice for the needy.(DT)
13 Surely the righteous will praise your name;
the upright will live in your presence.(DU)
