34 They did not (A)destroy the peoples,
    (B)as the Lord commanded them,
35 but they (C)mixed with the nations
    and learned to do as they did.
36 They served their idols,
    which became (D)a snare to them.
37 They (E)sacrificed their sons
    and their daughters to (F)the demons;
38 they poured out innocent blood,
    the blood of their sons and daughters,
whom they sacrificed to the idols of Canaan,
    and the land was (G)polluted with blood.
39 Thus they (H)became unclean by their acts,
    and (I)played the whore in their deeds.

40 Then (J)the anger of the Lord was kindled against (K)his people,
    and he abhorred his (L)heritage;
41 he (M)gave them into the hand of the nations,
    so that those who hated them ruled over them.
42 Their enemies (N)oppressed them,
    and they were brought into subjection under their power.
43 (O)Many times he delivered them,
    but they were rebellious in their (P)purposes
    and were (Q)brought low through their iniquity.

44 Nevertheless, he looked upon their distress,
    when he (R)heard their cry.
45 For their sake he (S)remembered his covenant,
    and (T)relented according to (U)the abundance of his steadfast love.
46 He caused them to be (V)pitied
    by all those who held them captive.

47 (W)Save us, O Lord our God,
    and (X)gather us from among the nations,
that we may give thanks to your holy name
    and glory in your praise.

48 (Y)Blessed be the Lord, the God of Israel,
    from everlasting to everlasting!
(Z)And let all the people say, “Amen!”
    (AA)Praise the Lord!

Book Five

Let the Redeemed of the Lord Say So

107 (AB)Oh give thanks to the Lord, (AC)for he is good,
    for his steadfast love endures forever!
Let (AD)the redeemed of the Lord say so,
    whom he has (AE)redeemed from trouble[a]
and (AF)gathered in from the lands,
    from the east and from the west,
    from the north and from the south.

Some (AG)wandered in desert wastes,
    finding no way (AH)to a city to dwell in;
hungry and thirsty,
    their soul (AI)fainted within them.
Then they (AJ)cried to the Lord in their trouble,
    and he delivered them from their distress.
He led them by (AK)a straight way
    till they reached (AL)a city to dwell in.
(AM)Let them thank the Lord for his steadfast love,
    for his wondrous works to the children of man!
For he (AN)satisfies the longing soul,
    (AO)and the hungry soul he fills with good things.

10 (AP)Some sat in darkness and in (AQ)the shadow of death,
    prisoners in (AR)affliction and in irons,
11 for they (AS)had rebelled against the words of God,
    and (AT)spurned the counsel of the Most High.
12 So he bowed their hearts down with hard labor;
    they fell down, (AU)with none to help.
13 (AV)Then they cried to the Lord in their trouble,
    and he delivered them from their distress.
14 He brought them out of (AW)darkness and the shadow of death,
    and (AX)burst their bonds apart.
15 (AY)Let them thank the Lord for his steadfast love,
    for his wondrous works to the children of man!
16 For he (AZ)shatters the doors of bronze
    and cuts in two the bars of iron.

17 Some were (BA)fools through their sinful ways,
    and because of their iniquities suffered affliction;
18 (BB)they loathed any kind of food,
    and they (BC)drew near to (BD)the gates of death.
19 (BE)Then they cried to the Lord in their trouble,
    and he delivered them from their distress.
20 He (BF)sent out his word and (BG)healed them,
    and (BH)delivered them from their destruction.
21 (BI)Let them thank the Lord for his steadfast love,
    for his wondrous works to the children of man!
22 And let them (BJ)offer sacrifices of thanksgiving,
    and (BK)tell of his deeds in (BL)songs of joy!

23 Some (BM)went down to the sea in ships,
    doing business on the great waters;
24 they saw the deeds of the Lord,
    his wondrous works in the deep.
25 For he (BN)commanded and (BO)raised the stormy wind,
    which lifted up the waves of the sea.
26 They mounted up to heaven; they went down to the depths;
    their courage (BP)melted away in their evil plight;
27 they reeled and (BQ)staggered like drunken men
    and (BR)were at their wits' end.[b]
28 (BS)Then they cried to the Lord in their trouble,
    and he delivered them from their distress.
29 He (BT)made the storm be still,
    and the waves of the sea were hushed.
30 Then they were glad that the waters[c] were quiet,
    and he brought them to their desired haven.
31 (BU)Let them thank the Lord for his steadfast love,
    for his wondrous works to the children of man!
32 Let them (BV)extol him in (BW)the congregation of the people,
    and praise him in the assembly of the elders.

33 He (BX)turns rivers into a desert,
    springs of water into thirsty ground,
34 (BY)a fruitful land into a salty waste,
    because of the evil of its inhabitants.
35 He (BZ)turns a desert into pools of water,
    (CA)a parched land into springs of water.
36 And there he lets the hungry dwell,
    and they establish (CB)a city to live in;
37 they sow fields and plant vineyards
    and get a fruitful yield.
38 (CC)By his blessing they multiply greatly,
    and he does not let their livestock diminish.
