I Will Sing of the Steadfast Love of the Lord

A Maskil[a] of (A)Ethan the Ezrahite.

89 (B)I will sing of (C)the steadfast love of the Lord, forever;
    with my mouth I will make known your (D)faithfulness to all generations.
For I said, (E)“Steadfast love will be built up forever;
    in the heavens (F)you will establish your (G)faithfulness.”
You have said, “I have made (H)a covenant with my (I)chosen one;
    I have (J)sworn to David my servant:
‘I will establish your (K)offspring forever,
    and build your (L)throne for all generations.’” Selah

Let (M)the heavens praise your (N)wonders, O Lord,
    your faithfulness in the assembly of (O)the holy ones!
For (P)who in the skies can be compared to the Lord?
    (Q)Who among the heavenly beings[b] is like the Lord,
a God greatly (R)to be feared in the council of (S)the holy ones,
    and awesome above all (T)who are around him?
O Lord God of hosts,
    (U)who is mighty as you are, O (V)Lord,
    with your faithfulness all around you?
You rule the raging of the sea;
    when its waves rise, you (W)still them.
10 You (X)crushed (Y)Rahab like a carcass;
    you (Z)scattered your enemies with your mighty arm.
11 (AA)The heavens are yours; the earth also is yours;
    (AB)the world and all that is in it, you have (AC)founded them.
12 (AD)The north and the south, you have created them;
    (AE)Tabor and (AF)Hermon (AG)joyously praise your name.
13 You have a mighty arm;
    strong is your hand, high your right hand.
14 (AH)Righteousness and justice are the foundation of your throne;
    (AI)steadfast love and faithfulness go before you.
15 Blessed are the people who know (AJ)the festal shout,
    who walk, O Lord, in (AK)the light of your face,
16 who exult in your (AL)name all the day
    and in your righteousness are (AM)exalted.
17 For you are (AN)the glory of their strength;
    by your favor our (AO)horn is exalted.
18 For our (AP)shield belongs to the Lord,
    our king to (AQ)the Holy One of Israel.

19 (AR)Of old you spoke in a vision to your godly one,[c] and said:
    “I have (AS)granted help to one who is (AT)mighty;
    I have exalted one (AU)chosen from the people.
20 (AV)I have found David, my servant;
    with my holy oil I have (AW)anointed him,
21 so that my (AX)hand shall be established with him;
    my arm also shall strengthen him.
22 The enemy shall not outwit him;
    (AY)the wicked shall not humble him.
23 I will (AZ)crush his foes before him
    and strike down those who hate him.
24 My (BA)faithfulness and my (BB)steadfast love shall be with him,
    and in my name shall his (BC)horn be exalted.
25 I will set his hand on (BD)the sea
    and his right hand on (BE)the rivers.
26 He shall cry to me, ‘You are my (BF)Father,
    my God, and (BG)the Rock of my salvation.’
27 And I will make him the (BH)firstborn,
    (BI)the highest of the kings of the earth.
28 My steadfast love I will keep for him forever,
    and my (BJ)covenant will stand firm[d] for him.
29 I will establish his (BK)offspring forever
    and his (BL)throne as (BM)the days of the heavens.
30 (BN)If his children forsake my law
    and do not walk according to my rules,[e]
31 if they violate my statutes
    and do not keep my commandments,
32 then I will punish their transgression with (BO)the rod
    and their iniquity with stripes,
33 but I will not remove from him my steadfast love
    or be false to my faithfulness.
34 I will not violate my (BP)covenant
    or alter the word that went forth from my lips.
35 Once for all I have sworn (BQ)by my holiness;
    I will not (BR)lie to David.
36 His (BS)offspring shall endure forever,
    (BT)his (BU)throne as long as (BV)the sun before me.
37 Like (BW)the moon it shall be established forever,
    (BX)a faithful witness in the skies.” Selah

38 But now you have (BY)cast off and rejected;
    you are full of wrath against your (BZ)anointed.
39 You have (CA)renounced (CB)the covenant with your servant;
    you have (CC)defiled his (CD)crown in the dust.
40 You have (CE)breached all his walls;
    you have laid his strongholds in ruins.
41 (CF)All who pass by plunder him;
    he has become (CG)the scorn of his neighbors.
42 You have exalted the right hand of his foes;
    you have made all his enemies rejoice.
43 You have also turned back the edge of his sword,
    and you have not made him stand in battle.
44 You have made his splendor to cease
    and cast his throne to the ground.
45 You have cut short (CH)the days of his youth;
    you have (CI)covered him with shame. Selah

46 (CJ)How long, O Lord? Will you hide yourself forever?
    How long will your wrath (CK)burn like fire?
47 (CL)Remember (CM)how short my (CN)time is!
    For what vanity you have created all the children of man!
48 (CO)What man can live and never (CP)see death?
    Who can deliver his soul from the power of (CQ)Sheol? Selah

49 Lord, where is your (CR)steadfast love of old,
    which by your (CS)faithfulness you swore to David?
50 (CT)Remember, O Lord, how your servants are mocked,
    and how I bear in my (CU)heart the insults[f] of all the many nations,
51 with which your enemies mock, O Lord,
    with which they mock (CV)the footsteps of your (CW)anointed.

52 (CX)Blessed be the Lord forever!
Amen and Amen.

Book Four

From Everlasting to Everlasting

A (CY)Prayer of Moses, the (CZ)man of God.

90 Lord, you have been our (DA)dwelling place[g]
    in all generations.
(DB)Before the (DC)mountains were brought forth,
    or ever you had formed the earth and the world,
    (DD)from everlasting to everlasting you are God.

You return man to dust
    and say, (DE)“Return, (DF)O children of man!”[h]
For (DG)a thousand years in your sight
    are but as (DH)yesterday when it is past,
    or as (DI)a watch in the night.

You (DJ)sweep them away as with a flood; they are like (DK)a dream,
    like (DL)grass that is renewed in the morning:
in (DM)the morning it flourishes and is renewed;
    in the evening it (DN)fades and (DO)withers.

For we are brought to an end by your anger;
    by your wrath we are dismayed.
You have (DP)set our iniquities before you,
    our (DQ)secret sins in the light of your presence.

For all our days pass away under your wrath;
    we bring our years to an end like a sigh.
10 The years of our life are seventy,
    or even by reason of strength eighty;
yet their span[i] is but toil and trouble;
    they are soon gone, and we fly away.
11 Who considers the power of your anger,
    and your wrath according to the fear of you?

12 (DR)So teach us to number our days
    that we may get a heart of wisdom.
13 (DS)Return, O Lord! (DT)How long?
    Have (DU)pity on your servants!
14 Satisfy us in the (DV)morning with your steadfast love,
    that we may (DW)rejoice and be glad all our days.
15 Make us glad for as many days as you have (DX)afflicted us,
    and for as many years as we have seen evil.
16 Let your (DY)work be shown to your servants,
    and your glorious power to their children.
17 Let the (DZ)favor[j] of the Lord our God be upon us,
    and establish (EA)the work of our hands upon us;
    yes, establish the work of our hands!

My Refuge and My Fortress

91 He who dwells in (EB)the shelter of the Most High
    will abide in (EC)the shadow of the Almighty.
I will say[k] to the Lord, “My (ED)refuge and my (EE)fortress,
    my God, in whom I (EF)trust.”

For he will deliver you from (EG)the snare of the fowler
    and from the deadly pestilence.
He will (EH)cover you with his pinions,
    and under his (EI)wings you will (EJ)find refuge;
    his (EK)faithfulness is (EL)a shield and buckler.
(EM)You will not fear (EN)the terror of the night,
    nor the arrow that flies by day,
nor the pestilence that stalks in darkness,
    nor the destruction that wastes at noonday.

A thousand may fall at your side,
    ten thousand at your right hand,
    but it will not come near you.
You will only look with your eyes
    and (EO)see the recompense of the wicked.

Because you have made the Lord your (EP)dwelling place—
    the Most High, who is my (EQ)refuge[l]
10 (ER)no evil shall be allowed to befall you,
    (ES)no plague come near your tent.

11 (ET)For he will command his (EU)angels concerning you
    to (EV)guard you in all your ways.
12 On their hands they will bear you up,
    lest you (EW)strike your foot against a stone.
13 You will tread on (EX)the lion and the (EY)adder;
    the young lion and (EZ)the serpent you will (FA)trample underfoot.

14 “Because he (FB)holds fast to me in love, I will deliver him;
    I will protect him, because he (FC)knows my name.
15 When he (FD)calls to me, I will answer him;
    I will be with him in trouble;
    I will rescue him and (FE)honor him.
16 With (FF)long life I will satisfy him
    and (FG)show him my salvation.”

Our Heavenly Dwelling

For we know that if (A)the tent that is (B)our earthly home is destroyed, we have a building from God, (C)a house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens. For in this tent (D)we groan, longing to (E)put on our heavenly dwelling, if indeed by putting it on[a] we may not be found naked. For while we are still in this tent, we groan, being burdened—not that we would be unclothed, but that we would be further clothed, so that what is mortal (F)may be swallowed up by life. He who has prepared us for this very thing is God, (G)who has given us the Spirit as a guarantee.

So we are always of good courage. We know that (H)while we are at home in the body we are away from the Lord, for (I)we walk by faith, not (J)by sight. Yes, we are of good courage, and we (K)would rather be away from the body and at home with the Lord. So whether we are at home or away, we make it our aim to (L)please him. 10 For (M)we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, (N)so that each one may receive what is due for what he has done in the body, whether good or evil.

The Ministry of Reconciliation

11 Therefore, knowing (O)the fear of the Lord, we persuade others. But (P)what we are is known to God, and I hope it is known also to your conscience. 12 (Q)We are not commending ourselves to you again but (R)giving you cause to boast about us, so that you may be able to answer those who boast about outward appearance and not about what is in the heart. 13 For if we (S)are beside ourselves, it is for God; if we are in our right mind, it is for you. 14 For the love of Christ (T)controls us, because we have concluded this: that (U)one has died for all, therefore all have died; 15 and he died for all, (V)that those who live might no longer live for themselves but (W)for him who for their sake died and was raised.

16 From now on, therefore, (X)we regard no one according to the flesh. Even though we once regarded Christ according to the flesh, we regard him thus no longer. 17 Therefore, if anyone is (Y)in Christ, he is (Z)a new creation.[b] (AA)The old has passed away; behold, the new has come. 18 All this is from God, (AB)who through Christ reconciled us to himself and gave us (AC)the ministry of reconciliation; 19 that is, in Christ God was reconciling[c] the world to himself, (AD)not counting their trespasses against them, and entrusting to us (AE)the message of reconciliation. 20 Therefore, (AF)we are ambassadors for Christ, (AG)God making his appeal through us. We implore you on behalf of Christ, be reconciled to God. 21 (AH)For our sake he made him to be sin (AI)who knew no sin, so that in him we might become (AJ)the righteousness of God.
