84 How lovely are Your ^(A)dwelling places,
Lord of armies!
²My ^(B)soul longed and even yearned for the courtyards of the Lord;
My heart and my flesh sing for joy to the ^(C)living God.
³The bird also has found a house,
And the swallow a nest for herself, where she may put her young:
Your ^(D)altars, Lord of armies,
^(E)My King and my God.
⁴^(F)Blessed are those who dwell in Your house!
They are ^(G)ever praising You. Selah

⁵Blessed is the person whose ^(H)strength is in You,
In ^[b]whose heart are the ^(I)roads to Zion!
⁶Passing through the Valley of ^[c]Baca they make it a ^[d]spring;
The ^(J)early rain also covers it with blessings.
⁷They ^(K)go from strength to strength,
^[e]Every one of them ^(L)appears before God in Zion.

⁸^(M)Lord God of armies, hear my prayer;
Listen, ^(N)God of Jacob! Selah
⁹See our ^(O)shield, God,
And look at the face of ^(P)Your anointed.
¹⁰For ^(Q)a day in Your courtyards is better than a thousand elsewhere.
I would rather stand at the threshold of the house of my God
Than live in the tents of wickedness.
¹¹For the Lord God is ^(R)a sun and ^(S)shield;
The Lord gives grace and ^(T)glory;
^(U)He withholds no good thing ^[f]from those who walk with integrity.
¹²Lord of armies,
^(V)Blessed is the person who trusts in You!

¹How lovely is your dwelling place,^(A)
    Lord Almighty!
²My soul yearns,^(B) even faints,
    for the courts of the Lord;
my heart and my flesh cry out
    for the living God.^(C)
³Even the sparrow has found a home,
    and the swallow a nest for herself,
    where she may have her young—
a place near your altar,^(D)
    Lord Almighty,^(E) my King^(F) and my God.^(G)
⁴Blessed are those who dwell in your house;
    they are ever praising you.^[c]

⁵Blessed are those whose strength^(H) is in you,
    whose hearts are set on pilgrimage.^(I)
⁶As they pass through the Valley of Baka,
    they make it a place of springs;^(J)
    the autumn^(K) rains also cover it with pools.^[d]
⁷They go from strength to strength,^(L)
    till each appears^(M) before God in Zion.^(N)

⁸Hear my prayer,^(O) Lord God Almighty;
listen to me, God of Jacob.
⁹Look on our shield,^[e]^(P) O God;
look with favor on your anointed one.^(Q)

¹⁰Better is one day in your courts
    than a thousand elsewhere;
I would rather be a doorkeeper^(R) in the house of my God
    than dwell in the tents of the wicked.
¹¹For the Lord God is a sun^(S) and shield;^(T)
    the Lord bestows favor and honor;
no good thing does he withhold^(U)
    from those whose walk is blameless.

¹²Lord Almighty,
blessed^(V) is the one who trusts in you.

Praise the Lord ^(A)from the heavens;

Praise Him, ^(D)all His heavenly armies!
³Praise Him, sun and moon;
Praise Him, all stars of light!

⁵They are to praise the name of the Lord,
For ^(G)He commanded and they were created.

Praise the Lord from the heavens;^(B)
    praise him in the heights above.
²Praise him, all his angels;^(C)
    praise him, all his heavenly hosts.^(D)

⁵Let them praise the name^(H) of the Lord,

A Bride for Isaac

24 Now ^(A)Abraham was old, advanced in age; and the Lord had ^(B)blessed Abraham in every way. ²Abraham said to his servant, the oldest of his household who was in ^(C)charge of all that he owned, “^(D)Please place your hand under my thigh, ³and I will make you swear by the Lord, ^(E)the God of heaven and the God of earth, that you ^(F)shall not take a wife for my son from the daughters of ^(G)the Canaanites, among whom I live; ⁴but you will go to ^(H)my country and to my relatives, and take a wife for my son Isaac.” ⁵The servant said to him, “Suppose the woman is not willing to follow me to this land; should I take your son back to the land from where you came?” ⁶Then Abraham said to him, “^(I)Beware that you do not take my son back there! ⁷^(J)The Lord, the God of heaven, who took me from my father’s house and from the land of my birth, and who spoke to me and who swore to me, saying, ‘^(K)To your ^[a]descendants I will give this land’—He will send ^(L)His angel ahead of you, and you will take a wife for my son from there. ⁸But if the woman is not willing to follow you, then you will ^(M)be free of this oath of mine; ^(N)only do not take my son back there.” ⁹So the servant ^(O)placed his hand under the thigh of his master Abraham, and swore to him concerning this matter.

¹⁰Then the servant took ten camels from the camels of his master, and went out with a variety of ^(P)good things of his master’s in his hand; so he set out and went to ^[b]Mesopotamia, to ^(Q)the city of Nahor. ¹¹He made the camels kneel down outside the city by ^(R)the well of water ^[c]when it was evening, ^(S)the time when women go out to draw water. ¹²And he said, “^(T)Lord, God of my master Abraham, please ^[d]^(U)grant me success today, and show kindness to my master Abraham. ¹³Behold, ^(V)I am standing by the ^[e]spring, and the daughters of the men of the city are coming out to draw water; ¹⁴now may it be that the young woman to whom I say, ‘Please let down your jar so that I may drink,’ and ^[f]who answers, ‘Drink, and I will water your camels also’—may she be the one whom You have appointed for Your servant Isaac; and by this I will know that You have shown kindness to my master.”

Rebekah Is Chosen

¹⁵And it came about, ^(W)before he had finished speaking, that behold, ^(X)Rebekah, who was born to Bethuel the son of ^(Y)Milcah, the wife of Abraham’s brother Nahor, came out with her jar on her shoulder. ¹⁶The young woman was ^(Z)very beautiful, a virgin; no man had ^[g]had relations with her. She went down to the spring, filled her jar, and came up. ¹⁷Then the servant ran to meet her, and said, “^(AA)Please let me drink a little water from your jar.” ¹⁸And ^(AB)she said, “Drink, my lord”; then she quickly lowered her jar to her hand, and gave him a drink. ¹⁹Now when she had finished giving him a drink, ^(AC)she said, “I will also draw water for your camels until they have finished drinking.” ²⁰So she quickly emptied her jar into the trough, and ran back to the well to draw, and she drew for all his camels. ²¹^(AD)Meanwhile, the man was taking a close look at her ^[h]in silence, to find out whether the Lord had made his journey successful or not.

²²When the camels had finished drinking, the man took a ^(AE)gold ring weighing a ^[i]half-shekel, and two bracelets for her ^[j]wrists weighing ten shekels in gold, ²³and he said, “Whose daughter are you? Please tell me, is there room for us to stay overnight at your father’s house?” ²⁴She said to him, “^(AF)I am the daughter of Bethuel, Milcah’s son, whom she bore to Nahor.” ²⁵Again she said to him, “We have plenty of both straw and feed, and room to stay overnight.” ²⁶Then the man ^(AG)bowed low and worshiped the Lord. ²⁷And he said, “^(AH)Blessed be the Lord, the God of my master Abraham, who has not abandoned ^(AI)His kindness and His trustworthiness toward my master; as for me, ^(AJ)the Lord has guided me in the way to the house of my master’s brothers.”

Isaac and Rebekah

24 Abraham was now very old,^(A) and the Lord had blessed^(B) him in every way.^(C) ²He said to the senior servant^(D) in his household, the one in charge of all that he had,^(E) “Put your hand under my thigh.^(F) ³I want you to swear^(G) by the Lord, the God of heaven^(H) and the God of earth,^(I) that you will not get a wife for my son^(J) from the daughters of the Canaanites,^(K) among whom I am living,^(L) ⁴but will go to my country and my own relatives^(M) and get a wife for my son Isaac.^(N)”

⁵The servant asked him, “What if the woman is unwilling to come back with me to this land?^(O) Shall I then take your son back to the country you came from?^(P)”

⁶“Make sure that you do not take my son back there,”^(Q) Abraham said. ⁷“The Lord, the God of heaven,^(R) who brought me out of my father’s household and my native land^(S) and who spoke to me and promised me on oath, saying, ‘To your offspring^[a]^(T) I will give this land’^(U)—he will send his angel before you^(V) so that you can get a wife for my son from there. ⁸If the woman is unwilling to come back with you, then you will be released from this oath^(W) of mine. Only do not take my son back there.”^(X) ⁹So the servant put his hand under the thigh^(Y) of his master^(Z) Abraham and swore an oath to him concerning this matter.

¹⁰Then the servant left, taking with him ten of his master’s camels^(AA) loaded with all kinds of good things^(AB) from his master. He set out for Aram Naharaim^[b]^(AC) and made his way to the town of Nahor.^(AD) ¹¹He had the camels kneel down near the well^(AE) outside the town; it was toward evening, the time the women go out to draw water.^(AF)

¹²Then he prayed, “Lord, God of my master Abraham,^(AG) make me successful^(AH) today, and show kindness^(AI) to my master Abraham. ¹³See, I am standing beside this spring, and the daughters of the townspeople are coming out to draw water.^(AJ) ¹⁴May it be that when I say to a young woman, ‘Please let down your jar that I may have a drink,’ and she says, ‘Drink,^(AK) and I’ll water your camels too’^(AL)—let her be the one you have chosen for your servant Isaac.^(AM) By this I will know^(AN) that you have shown kindness to my master.”

¹⁹After she had given him a drink, she said, “I’ll draw water for your camels^(AX) too,^(AY) until they have had enough to drink.” ²⁰So she quickly emptied her jar into the trough, ran back to the well to draw more water, and drew enough for all his camels.^(AZ) ²¹Without saying a word, the man watched her closely to learn whether or not the Lord had made his journey successful.^(BA)

²²When the camels had finished drinking, the man took out a gold nose ring^(BB) weighing a beka^[c] and two gold bracelets^(BC) weighing ten shekels.^[d] ²³Then he asked, “Whose daughter are you?^(BD) Please tell me, is there room in your father’s house for us to spend the night?^(BE)”

²⁴She answered him, “I am the daughter of Bethuel, the son that Milkah bore to Nahor.^(BF)” ²⁵And she added, “We have plenty of straw and fodder,^(BG) as well as room for you to spend the night.”

²⁶Then the man bowed down and worshiped the Lord,^(BH) ²⁷saying, “Praise be to the Lord,^(BI) the God of my master Abraham,^(BJ) who has not abandoned his kindness and faithfulness^(BK) to my master. As for me, the Lord has led me on the journey^(BL) to the house of my master’s relatives.”^(BM)

A Father’s Discipline

⁴^(C)You have not yet resisted ^[b]^(D)to the point of shedding blood in your striving against sin; ⁵and you have forgotten the exhortation which is addressed to you as sons,

“^(E)My son, do not regard lightly the discipline of the Lord,
Nor ^(F)faint when you are punished by Him;
⁶^(G)For ^(H)whom the Lord loves He disciplines,
And He punishes every son whom He accepts.”

⁷It is for discipline that you endure; ^(I)God deals with you as with sons; for what son is there whom his father does not discipline? ⁸But if you are without discipline, ^(J)of which all have become partakers, then you are illegitimate children and not sons. ⁹Furthermore, we had ^[c]earthly fathers to discipline us, and we ^(K)respected them; shall we not much more be subject to ^(L)the Father of ^[d]spirits, and ^(M)live? ¹⁰For they disciplined us for a short time as seemed best to them, but He disciplines us for our good, ^(N)so that we may share His holiness. ¹¹^(O)For the moment, all discipline seems not to be pleasant, but painful; yet to those who have been trained by it, afterward it yields the ^(P)peaceful fruit of righteousness.

³Consider him who endured such opposition from sinners, so that you will not grow weary^(A) and lose heart.

God Disciplines His Children

⁴In your struggle against sin, you have not yet resisted to the point of shedding your blood.^(B) ⁵And have you completely forgotten this word of encouragement that addresses you as a father addresses his son? It says,

“My son, do not make light of the Lord’s discipline,
and do not lose heart^(C) when he rebukes you,
⁶because the Lord disciplines the one he loves,^(D)
and he chastens everyone he accepts as his son.”^[a]^(E)

⁷Endure hardship as discipline; God is treating you as his children.^(F) For what children are not disciplined by their father? ⁸If you are not disciplined—and everyone undergoes discipline^(G)—then you are not legitimate, not true sons and daughters at all. ⁹Moreover, we have all had human fathers who disciplined us and we respected them for it. How much more should we submit to the Father of spirits^(H) and live!^(I) ¹⁰They disciplined us for a little while as they thought best; but God disciplines us for our good, in order that we may share in his holiness.^(J) ¹¹No discipline seems pleasant at the time, but painful. Later on, however, it produces a harvest of righteousness and peace^(K) for those who have been trained by it.

7 After these things Jesus ^(A)was walking in Galilee, for He was unwilling to walk in Judea because ^(B)the Jews ^(C)were seeking to kill Him. ²Now the feast of the Jews, ^(D)the Feast of Booths, was near. ³So His ^(E)brothers said to Him, “Move on from here and go into Judea, so that Your ^(F)disciples also may see Your works which You are doing. ⁴For no one does anything in secret ^[a]when he himself is striving to be known publicly. If You are doing these things, show Yourself to the world.” ⁵For not even His ^(G)brothers believed in Him. ⁶So Jesus *said to them, “^(H)My time is not yet here, but your time is always ready. ⁷^(I)The world cannot hate you, but it hates Me because I testify about it, that ^(J)its deeds are evil. ⁸Go up to the feast yourselves; I am not going up to this feast, because ^(K)My time has not yet fully arrived.” ⁹Now having said these things to them, He stayed in Galilee.

¹⁰But when His ^(L)brothers had gone up to the feast, then He Himself also went up, not publicly, but as though in secret. ¹¹^(M)So the Jews ^(N)were looking for Him at the feast and saying, “Where is He?” ¹²And there was a great deal of talk about Him in secret among the crowds: ^(O)some were saying, “He is a good man”; others were saying, “No, on the contrary, He is misleading the people.” ¹³However, no one was speaking openly about Him, for ^(P)fear of ^[b]the Jews.

Jesus Goes to the Festival of Tabernacles

7 After this, Jesus went around in Galilee. He did not want^[a] to go about in Judea because the Jewish leaders^(A) there were looking for a way to kill him.^(B) ²But when the Jewish Festival of Tabernacles^(C) was near, ³Jesus’ brothers^(D) said to him, “Leave Galilee and go to Judea, so that your disciples there may see the works you do. ⁴No one who wants to become a public figure acts in secret. Since you are doing these things, show yourself to the world.” ⁵For even his own brothers did not believe in him.^(E)

⁶Therefore Jesus told them, “My time^(F) is not yet here; for you any time will do. ⁷The world cannot hate you, but it hates me^(G) because I testify that its works are evil.^(H) ⁸You go to the festival. I am not^[b] going up to this festival, because my time^(I) has not yet fully come.” ⁹After he had said this, he stayed in Galilee.

¹⁰However, after his brothers had left for the festival, he went also, not publicly, but in secret. ¹¹Now at the festival the Jewish leaders were watching for Jesus^(J) and asking, “Where is he?”

¹²Among the crowds there was widespread whispering about him. Some said, “He is a good man.”

Others replied, “No, he deceives the people.”^(K) ¹³But no one would say anything publicly about him for fear of the leaders.^(L)
