For the Lord Most High is to be (C)feared,
A (D)great King over all the earth.
He (E)subdues peoples under us
And nations under our feet.
He chooses our (F)inheritance for us,
The (G)pride of Jacob whom He loves. Selah

God has (H)ascended [a]with a shout,
The Lord, [b]with the (I)sound of a trumpet.
(J)Sing praises to God, sing praises;
Sing praises to (K)our King, sing praises.
For God is the (L)King of all the earth;
Sing praises (M)with a psalm of wisdom.
God (N)reigns over the nations,
God [c]sits on (O)His holy throne.
The [d](P)princes of the people have assembled as the (Q)people of the God of Abraham,

He is (S)highly exalted.

10 And it came about, as Aaron spoke to the entire congregation of the sons of Israel, that they [a]looked toward the wilderness, and behold, (A)the glory of the Lord appeared in the cloud. 11 And the Lord spoke to Moses, saying, 12 (B)I have heard the grumblings of the sons of Israel; speak to them, saying, ‘[b]At twilight you shall eat meat, and in the morning you shall be filled with bread; and (C)you shall know that I am the Lord your God.’”

13 So it came about at evening that (D)the quails came up and covered the camp, and in the morning (E)there was a layer of dew around the camp. 14 (F)When the layer of dew [c]evaporated, behold, on the [d]surface of the wilderness (G)there was a fine flake-like thing, fine as the frost on the ground. 15 When the sons of Israel saw it, they said to one another, “[e]What is it?” For they did not know what it was. And Moses said to them, “(H)It is the bread which the Lord has given you to eat. 16 This is [f]what the Lord has commanded: ‘Everyone gather [g]as much as he will eat; you shall take [h](I)an omer apiece according to the number of people each of you has in his tent.’” 17 The sons of Israel did so, and some gathered much and some little. 18 When they measured it by the [i]omer, (J)the one who had gathered much did not have too much, and the one who had gathered little did not have too little; everyone gathered [j]as much as he would eat. 19 Moses said to them, “(K)No one is to leave any of it until morning.” 20 But they did not listen to Moses, and some left part of it until morning, and it bred worms and stank; and Moses was angry with them. 21 They gathered it morning by morning, everyone [k]as much as he would eat; but when the sun became hot, it would melt.

The Sabbath

22 (L)Now on the sixth day they gathered twice as much bread, [l]two omers for each one. When all the (M)leaders of the congregation came and told Moses,

10 While Aaron was speaking to the whole Israelite community, they looked toward the desert, and there was the glory(A) of the Lord appearing in the cloud.(B)

11 The Lord said to Moses, 12 “I have heard the grumbling(C) of the Israelites. Tell them, ‘At twilight you will eat meat, and in the morning you will be filled with bread. Then you will know that I am the Lord your God.’”(D)

13 That evening quail(E) came and covered the camp, and in the morning there was a layer of dew(F) around the camp. 14 When the dew was gone, thin flakes like frost(G) on the ground appeared on the desert floor. 15 When the Israelites saw it, they said to each other, “What is it?” For they did not know(H) what it was.

Moses said to them, “It is the bread(I) the Lord has given you to eat. 16 This is what the Lord has commanded: ‘Everyone is to gather as much as they need. Take an omer[a](J) for each person you have in your tent.’”

17 The Israelites did as they were told; some gathered much, some little. 18 And when they measured it by the omer, the one who gathered much did not have too much, and the one who gathered little did not have too little.(K) Everyone had gathered just as much as they needed.

19 Then Moses said to them, “No one is to keep any of it until morning.”(L)

20 However, some of them paid no attention to Moses; they kept part of it until morning, but it was full of maggots and began to smell.(M) So Moses was angry(N) with them.

21 Each morning everyone gathered as much as they needed, and when the sun grew hot, it melted away. 22 On the sixth day, they gathered twice(O) as much—two omers[b] for each person—and the leaders of the community(P) came and reported this to Moses.

11 (A)Beloved, (B)I urge you as (C)foreigners and strangers to abstain from (D)fleshly lusts, which wage (E)war against the soul. 12 (F)Keep your behavior excellent among the Gentiles, so that in the thing in which they (G)slander you as evildoers, they may [a]because of your good deeds, as they observe them, (H)glorify God (I)on the day of [b]visitation.

Honor Authority

13 (J)Submit yourselves for the Lord’s sake to every human institution, whether to a king as the one in authority, 14 or to governors as sent [c]by him (K)for the punishment of evildoers and the (L)praise of those who do right. 15 For [d](M)such is the will of God, that by doing right you (N)silence the ignorance of foolish people. 16 Act as (O)free people, and [e]do not use your freedom as a [f]covering for evil, but use it as (P)bond-servants of God. 17 (Q)Honor all people, (R)love the brotherhood, (S)fear God, (T)honor the [g]king.

18 (U)Servants, be subject to your masters with all respect, not only to those who are good and (V)gentle, but also to those who are [h]harsh. 19 For this finds favor, if for the sake of (W)conscience toward God a person endures [i]grief when suffering unjustly. 20 For what credit is there if, when you sin and are harshly treated, you endure it with patience? But if (X)when you do what is right and suffer for it you patiently endure it, this finds favor with God.

Christ Is Our Example

21 For (Y)you have been called for this purpose, (Z)because Christ also suffered for you, leaving you (AA)an example, so that you would follow in His steps, 22 He who (AB)committed no sin, nor was any deceit found in His mouth; 23 [j]and while being (AC)abusively insulted, He did not insult in return; while suffering, He did not threaten, but kept entrusting Himself to Him who judges righteously; 24 and He Himself [k](AD)brought our sins in His body up on the [l](AE)cross, so that we (AF)might die to [m]sin and live for righteousness; (AG)by His [n]wounds you were (AH)healed. 25 For you were (AI)continually straying like sheep, but now you have returned to the (AJ)Shepherd and [o]Guardian of your souls.

Godly Living

(AK)In the same way, you wives, (AL)be subject to your own husbands so that even if any of them are disobedient to the word, they may be (AM)won over without a word by the behavior of their wives, as they observe your pure [p]and respectful behavior. (AN)Your adornment must not be merely the external—braiding the hair, wearing gold jewelry, or putting on apparel; but it should be (AO)the hidden person of the heart, with the imperishable quality of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is precious in the sight of God. For in this way the holy women of former times, (AP)who hoped in God, also used to adorn themselves, being subject to their own husbands, just as Sarah obeyed Abraham, (AQ)calling him lord; and you have proved to be her children if you do what is right [q](AR)without being frightened by any fear.

(AS)You husbands in the same way, live with your wives in an understanding way, as with [r](AT)someone weaker, since she is a woman; and show her honor as a fellow heir of the grace of life, so that your prayers will not be hindered.

[s]To sum up, (AU)all of you be harmonious, sympathetic, [t](AV)loving, (AW)compassionate, and (AX)humble; (AY)not returning evil for evil or (AZ)insult for insult, but giving a (BA)blessing instead; for (BB)you were called for the very purpose that you would (BC)inherit a blessing. 10 For,

(BD)The one who desires life, to love and see good days,
Must keep his tongue from evil and his lips from speaking deceit.
11 (BE)He must turn away from evil and do good;
He must seek peace and pursue it.
12 (BF)For the eyes of the Lord are toward the righteous,
And His ears attend to their prayer,
But the face of the Lord is against evildoers.”

Living Godly Lives in a Pagan Society

11 Dear friends,(A) I urge you, as foreigners and exiles,(B) to abstain from sinful desires,(C) which wage war against your soul.(D) 12 Live such good lives among the pagans that, though they accuse you of doing wrong, they may see your good deeds(E) and glorify God(F) on the day he visits us.

13 Submit yourselves for the Lord’s sake to every human authority:(G) whether to the emperor, as the supreme authority, 14 or to governors, who are sent by him to punish those who do wrong(H) and to commend those who do right.(I) 15 For it is God’s will(J) that by doing good you should silence the ignorant talk of foolish people.(K) 16 Live as free people,(L) but do not use your freedom as a cover-up for evil;(M) live as God’s slaves.(N) 17 Show proper respect to everyone, love the family of believers,(O) fear God, honor the emperor.(P)

18 Slaves, in reverent fear of God submit yourselves to your masters,(Q) not only to those who are good and considerate,(R) but also to those who are harsh. 19 For it is commendable if someone bears up under the pain of unjust suffering because they are conscious of God.(S) 20 But how is it to your credit if you receive a beating for doing wrong and endure it? But if you suffer for doing good and you endure it, this is commendable before God.(T) 21 To this(U) you were called,(V) because Christ suffered for you,(W) leaving you an example,(X) that you should follow in his steps.

22 “He committed no sin,(Y)
    and no deceit was found in his mouth.”[a](Z)

23 When they hurled their insults at him,(AA) he did not retaliate; when he suffered, he made no threats.(AB) Instead, he entrusted himself(AC) to him who judges justly.(AD) 24 “He himself bore our sins”(AE) in his body on the cross,(AF) so that we might die to sins(AG) and live for righteousness; “by his wounds you have been healed.”(AH) 25 For “you were like sheep going astray,”[b](AI) but now you have returned to the Shepherd(AJ) and Overseer of your souls.(AK)

Wives, in the same way submit yourselves(AL) to your own husbands(AM) so that, if any of them do not believe the word, they may be won over(AN) without words by the behavior of their wives, when they see the purity and reverence of your lives. Your beauty should not come from outward adornment, such as elaborate hairstyles and the wearing of gold jewelry or fine clothes.(AO) Rather, it should be that of your inner self,(AP) the unfading beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is of great worth in God’s sight.(AQ) For this is the way the holy women of the past who put their hope in God(AR) used to adorn themselves.(AS) They submitted themselves to their own husbands, like Sarah, who obeyed Abraham and called him her lord.(AT) You are her daughters if you do what is right and do not give way to fear.

Husbands,(AU) in the same way be considerate as you live with your wives, and treat them with respect as the weaker partner and as heirs with you of the gracious gift of life, so that nothing will hinder your prayers.

Suffering for Doing Good

Finally, all of you, be like-minded,(AV) be sympathetic, love one another,(AW) be compassionate and humble.(AX) Do not repay evil with evil(AY) or insult with insult.(AZ) On the contrary, repay evil with blessing,(BA) because to this(BB) you were called(BC) so that you may inherit a blessing.(BD) 10 For,

“Whoever would love life
    and see good days
must keep their tongue from evil
    and their lips from deceitful speech.
11 They must turn from evil and do good;
    they must seek peace and pursue it.
12 For the eyes of the Lord are on the righteous
    and his ears are attentive to their prayer,
but the face of the Lord is against those who do evil.”[c](BE)

Disciples’ Relation to Each Other

12 “This is (A)My commandment, that you love one another, just as I have loved you. 13 (B)Greater love has no one than this, that a person will (C)lay down his life for his friends. 14 You are My (D)friends if (E)you do what I command you. 15 No longer do I call you slaves, for the slave does not know what his master is doing; but I have called you friends, because (F)all things that I have heard from My Father I have made known to you. 16 (G)You did not choose Me but I chose you, and appointed you that you would go and (H)bear fruit, and that your fruit would remain, so that (I)whatever you ask of the Father in My name He may give to you. 17 This (J)I command you, that you love one another.

Disciples’ Relation to the World

18 (K)If the world hates you, [a]you know that it has hated Me before it hated you. 19 If you were of the world, the world would love you as its own; but because you are not of the world, but (L)I chose you out of the world, (M)because of this the world hates you. 20 Remember the word that I said to you, ‘(N)A slave is not greater than his master.’ If they persecuted Me, (O)they will persecute you as well; if they (P)followed My word, they will follow yours also. 21 But all these things they will do to you (Q)on account of My name, (R)because they do not know the One who sent Me. 22 (S)If I had not come and spoken to them, they would not have [b]sin; but now they have no excuse for their sin. 23 The one who hates Me hates My Father also. 24 (T)If I had not done among them (U)the works which no one else did, they would not have [c]sin; but now they have both seen and hated Me and My Father as well. 25 But this has happened so that the word that is written in their (V)Law will be fulfilled: ‘(W)They hated Me for no reason.’

26 “When the [d](X)Helper comes, (Y)whom I will send to you from the Father, namely, (Z)the Spirit of truth who comes from the Father, (AA)He will testify about Me, 27 and [e](AB)you are testifying as well, because you have been with Me (AC)from the beginning.

Instead, I have called you friends, for everything that I learned from my Father I have made known to you.(E) 16 You did not choose me, but I chose you and appointed you(F) so that you might go and bear fruit(G)—fruit that will last—and so that whatever you ask in my name the Father will give you.(H) 17 This is my command: Love each other.(I)

The World Hates the Disciples

18 “If the world hates you,(J) keep in mind that it hated me first. 19 If you belonged to the world, it would love you as its own. As it is, you do not belong to the world, but I have chosen you(K) out of the world. That is why the world hates you.(L) 20 Remember what I told you: ‘A servant is not greater than his master.’[a](M) If they persecuted me, they will persecute you also.(N) If they obeyed my teaching, they will obey yours also. 21 They will treat you this way because of my name,(O) for they do not know the one who sent me.(P) 22 If I had not come and spoken to them,(Q) they would not be guilty of sin; but now they have no excuse for their sin.(R) 23 Whoever hates me hates my Father as well. 24 If I had not done among them the works no one else did,(S) they would not be guilty of sin.(T) As it is, they have seen, and yet they have hated both me and my Father. 25 But this is to fulfill what is written in their Law:(U) ‘They hated me without reason.’[b](V)

The Work of the Holy Spirit

26 “When the Advocate(W) comes, whom I will send to you from the Father(X)—the Spirit of truth(Y) who goes out from the Father—he will testify about me.(Z) 27 And you also must testify,(AA) for you have been with me from the beginning.(AB)
