Psalm 135

Praise for God’s Goodness and Might

Praise the Lord!
    Praise the name of the Lord;
    give praise, O servants of the Lord,
you who stand in the house of the Lord,
    in the courts of the house of our God.(A)
Praise the Lord, for the Lord is good;
    sing to his name, for he is gracious.(B)
For the Lord has chosen Jacob for himself,
    Israel as his own possession.(C)

For I know that the Lord is great;
    our Lord is above all gods.(D)
Whatever the Lord pleases he does,
    in heaven and on earth,
    in the seas and all deeps.(E)
He it is who makes the clouds rise at the end of the earth;
    he makes lightnings for the rain
    and brings out the wind from his storehouses.(F)

He it was who struck down the firstborn of Egypt,
    both humans and animals;(G)
he sent signs and wonders
    into your midst, O Egypt,
    against Pharaoh and all his servants.(H)
10 He struck down many nations
    and killed mighty kings—(I)
11 Sihon, king of the Amorites,
    and Og, king of Bashan,
    and all the kingdoms of Canaan—(J)
12 and gave their land as a heritage,
    a heritage to his people Israel.(K)

13 Your name, O Lord, endures forever,
    your renown, O Lord, throughout all ages.(L)
14 For the Lord will vindicate his people
    and have compassion on his servants.(M)

15 The idols of the nations are silver and gold,
    the work of human hands.(N)
16 They have mouths, but they do not speak;
    they have eyes, but they do not see;
17 they have ears, but they do not hear,
    a nose, but there is no breath in their mouths.
18 Those who make them
    and all who trust them
    shall become like them.

19 O house of Israel, bless the Lord!
    O house of Aaron, bless the Lord!(O)
20 O house of Levi, bless the Lord!
    You who fear the Lord, bless the Lord!(P)
21 Blessed be the Lord from Zion,
    he who resides in Jerusalem.
Praise the Lord!(Q)

who made the great lights,
    for his steadfast love endures forever;(W)
the sun to rule over the day,
    for his steadfast love endures forever;(X)
the moon and stars to rule over the night,
    for his steadfast love endures forever;

10 who struck Egypt through their firstborn,
    for his steadfast love endures forever;(Y)
11 and brought Israel out from among them,
    for his steadfast love endures forever;(Z)
12 with a strong hand and an outstretched arm,
    for his steadfast love endures forever;(AA)
13 who divided the Red Sea[a] in two,
    for his steadfast love endures forever;(AB)
14 and made Israel pass through the midst of it,
    for his steadfast love endures forever;(AC)
15 but overthrew Pharaoh and his army in the Red Sea,[b]
    for his steadfast love endures forever;(AD)
16 who led his people through the wilderness,
    for his steadfast love endures forever;(AE)
who made water flow from the rock,
    for his steadfast love endures forever;[c]
17 who struck down great kings,
    for his steadfast love endures forever;(AF)
18 and killed famous kings,
    for his steadfast love endures forever;
19 Sihon, king of the Amorites,
    for his steadfast love endures forever;
20 and Og, king of Bashan,
    for his steadfast love endures forever;
21 and gave their land as a heritage,
    for his steadfast love endures forever;(AG)
22 a heritage to his servant Israel,
    for his steadfast love endures forever.

23 It is he who remembered us in our low estate,
    for his steadfast love endures forever;(AH)
24 and rescued us from our foes,
    for his steadfast love endures forever;(AI)
25 who gives food to all flesh,
    for his steadfast love endures forever.(AJ)

26 O give thanks to the God of heaven,
    for his steadfast love endures forever.

Psalm 137

Lament over the Destruction of Jerusalem

By the rivers of Babylon—
    there we sat down, and there we wept
    when we remembered Zion.(AK)
On the willows[d] there
    we hung up our harps.
For there our captors
    asked us for songs,
and our tormentors asked for mirth, saying,
    “Sing us one of the songs of Zion!”(AL)

How could we sing the Lord’s song
    in a foreign land?
If I forget you, O Jerusalem,
    let my right hand wither!
Let my tongue cling to the roof of my mouth,
    if I do not remember you,
if I do not set Jerusalem
    above my highest joy.(AM)

Remember, O Lord, against the Edomites
    the day of Jerusalem’s fall,
how they said, “Tear it down! Tear it down!
    Down to its foundations!”(AN)
O daughter Babylon, you devastator![e]
    Happy shall they be who pay you back
    what you have done to us!(AO)
Happy shall they be who take your little ones
    and dash them against the rock!(AP)

Psalm 138

Thanksgiving and Praise

Of David.

I give you thanks, O Lord,[f] with my whole heart;
    before the gods I sing your praise;(AQ)
I bow down toward your holy temple
    and give thanks to your name for your steadfast love and your faithfulness,
    for you have exalted your name and your word
    above everything.[g](AR)
On the day I called, you answered me;
    you increased my strength of soul.[h](AS)

All the kings of the earth shall praise you, O Lord,
    for they have heard the words of your mouth.(AT)
They shall sing of the ways of the Lord,
    for great is the glory of the Lord.
For though the Lord is high, he regards the lowly,
    but the haughty he perceives from far away.(AU)

Though I walk in the midst of trouble,
    you preserve me against the wrath of my enemies;
you stretch out your hand,
    and your right hand delivers me.(AV)
The Lord will fulfill his purpose for me;
    your steadfast love, O Lord, endures forever.
    Do not forsake the work of your hands.(AW)

Psalm 139

The Inescapable God

To the leader. Of David. A Psalm.

O Lord, you have searched me and known me.(AX)
You know when I sit down and when I rise up;
    you discern my thoughts from far away.(AY)
You search out my path and my lying down
    and are acquainted with all my ways.(AZ)
Even before a word is on my tongue,
    O Lord, you know it completely.(BA)
You hem me in, behind and before,
    and lay your hand upon me.(BB)
Such knowledge is too wonderful for me;
    it is so high that I cannot attain it.(BC)

Where can I go from your spirit?
    Or where can I flee from your presence?(BD)
If I ascend to heaven, you are there;
    if I make my bed in Sheol, you are there.(BE)
If I take the wings of the morning
    and settle at the farthest limits of the sea,
10 even there your hand shall lead me,
    and your right hand shall hold me fast.(BF)
11 If I say, “Surely the darkness shall cover me,
    and night wraps itself around me,”[i](BG)
12 even the darkness is not dark to you;
    the night is as bright as the day,
    for darkness is as light to you.(BH)

13 For it was you who formed my inward parts;
    you knit me together in my mother’s womb.(BI)
14 I praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made.
    Wonderful are your works;
that I know very well.(BJ)
15     My frame was not hidden from you,
when I was being made in secret,
    intricately woven in the depths of the earth.(BK)
16 Your eyes beheld my unformed substance.
In your book were written
    all the days that were formed for me,
    when none of them as yet existed.[j]
17 How weighty to me are your thoughts, O God!
    How vast is the sum of them!(BL)
18 I try to count them—they are more than the sand;
    I come to the end[k]—I am still with you.

19 O that you would kill the wicked, O God,
    and that the bloodthirsty would depart from me—(BM)
20 those who speak of you maliciously
    and lift themselves up against you for evil![l](BN)
21 Do I not hate those who hate you, O Lord?
    And do I not loathe those who rise up against you?(BO)
22 I hate them with perfect hatred;
    I count them my enemies.
23 Search me, O God, and know my heart;
    test me and know my thoughts.(BP)
24 See if there is any wicked[m] way in me,
    and lead me in the way everlasting.[n](BQ)

Psalm 140

Prayer for Deliverance from Enemies

To the leader. A Psalm of David.

Deliver me, O Lord, from evildoers;
    protect me from those who are violent,(BR)
who plan evil things in their minds
    and stir up wars continually.(BS)
They make their tongue sharp as a snake’s,
    and under their lips is the venom of vipers. Selah(BT)

Guard me, O Lord, from the hands of the wicked;
    protect me from the violent
    who have planned my downfall.(BU)
The arrogant have hidden a trap for me,
    and with cords they have spread a net,[o]
    along the road they have set snares for me. Selah(BV)

I say to the Lord, “You are my God;
    give ear, O Lord, to the voice of my supplications.”(BW)
O Lord, my Lord, my strong deliverer,
    you have covered my head in the day of battle.(BX)
Do not grant, O Lord, the desires of the wicked;
    do not further their evil plot.[p] Selah(BY)

Those who surround me lift up their heads;[q]
    let the mischief of their lips overwhelm them!(BZ)
10 Let burning coals fall on them!
    Let them be flung into pits, no more to rise!(CA)
11 Do not let the slanderer be established in the land;
    let evil speedily hunt down the violent!(CB)

12 I know that the Lord maintains the cause of the needy
    and executes justice for the poor.(CC)
13 Surely the righteous shall give thanks to your name;
    the upright shall live in your presence.(CD)
