Un maschil[a] al lui Asaf
1 Poporul meu, ascultă învăţătura mea!
Deschideţi-vă urechile la cuvintele gurii mele!
2 Îmi voi deschide gura cu pilde,
voi rosti lucruri ascunse din vremuri străvechi,
3 lucruri pe care le-am auzit, lucrurile pe care le-am învăţat,
pe care ni le-au povestit strămoşii noştri.
4 Nu le vom ascunde de fiii noştri,
ci vom spune generaţiei următoare
isprăvile demne de laudă ale Domnului,
puterea şi minunile Lui pe care le-a săvârşit.
5 El a ridicat o mărturie în Iacov,
a pus o Lege în Israel
şi a poruncit strămoşilor noştri
să-şi înveţe fiii din ea,
6 pentru ca generaţia următoare,
fiii care se vor naşte, să o cunoască,
şi ei, la rândul lor, să o povestească fiilor lor;
7 să-şi pună încrederea în Dumnezeu,
să nu uite lucrările lui Dumnezeu,
ci să-I împlinească poruncile;
8 să nu fie ca strămoşii lor,
o generaţie neascultătoare şi răzvrătită,
o generaţie care nu şi-a pregătit inima
şi al cărei duh nu a fost credincios lui Dumnezeu.
9 Fiii lui Efraim, înarmaţi, trăgători cu arcul,
au dat înapoi în ziua bătăliei:
10 nu păziseră legământul lui Dumnezeu,
refuzând să umble în Legea Lui;
11 I-au uitat faptele
şi minunile pe care El le arătase,
12 minunile pe care le înfăptuise înaintea strămoşilor lor
în regiunea Ţoan din ţara Egiptului.
13 A despărţit marea şi i-a trecut prin ea,
punând apele să stea ca un zid.
14 I-a călăuzit printr-un nor ziua,
şi toată noaptea – prin lumina focului.
15 A despicat stânci în pustie,
ca să le dea să bea ape, cât adâncul de multe.
16 A făcut ca din stânci să izvorască torente
şi să curgă apa râuri-râuri.
17 Dar ei şi-au înmulţit păcatele faţă de El,
răzvrătindu-se împotriva Celui Preaînalt în pustie.
18 L-au ispitit pe Dumnezeu în inimile lor,
cerând mâncare după poftele lor.
19 Au vorbit împotriva lui Dumnezeu, zicând:
„Oare va putea Dumnezeu să ne întindă masa în pustie?
20 Desigur, El a lovit stânca
din care a ţâşnit apa şi s-au revărsat ueduri,
însă va putea El oare să ne dea şi pâine,
va putea El să dea carne poporului Său?“
21 Auzind aceasta, Domnul a străbătut tabăra.
S-a aprins un foc împotriva lui Iacov
şi a izbucnit mânia Sa împotriva lui Israel.
22 Aceasta pentru că nu s-au încrezut în Dumnezeu
şi pentru că nu şi-au pus încrederea în mântuirea Lui.
23 Totuşi El a dat porunci norilor de sus
şi a deschis porţile cerului.
24 A făcut să plouă asupra lor cu mană ca să aibă de mâncare
şi le-a dat grâu ceresc.
25 Au mâncat cu toţii pâinea celor puternici[b]
şi le-a trimis hrană pe săturate.
26 A stârnit în ceruri vântul de răsărit
şi a condus cu puterea Lui vântul din sud.
27 A plouat peste ei cu carne ca pulberea de multă
şi cu înaripate multe cât nisipul mării.
28 Le-a făcut să cadă în mijlocul taberei,
împrejurul locuinţelor lor.
29 Au mâncat şi s-au îmbuibat,
căci El le dăduse după poftele lor.
30 Dar înainte ca ei să-şi astâmpere pofta,
chiar în timp ce aveau mâncarea în gură,
31 mânia lui Dumnezeu a şi izbucnit împotriva lor,
omorând pe cei mai viguroşi dintre ei
şi doborând pe tinerii lui Israel.
32 Cu toate acestea, ei au continuat să păcătuiască
şi, în pofida minunilor Lui, ei tot nu au crezut.
33 De aceea le-a pus El capăt zilelor în deşertăciune
şi anilor lor în teroare.
34 Când îi pedepsea cu moartea, ei Îl căutau,
se întorceau şi-L căutau pe Dumnezeu cu râvnă;
35 îşi aminteau din nou că Dumnezeu fusese stânca lor,
că Dumnezeul Preaînalt fusese răscumpărătorul lor.
36 Dar Îl înşelau cu gurile lor
şi cu limba lor Îl minţeau.
37 Inima lor nu era în întregime a Lui
şi nu se încredeau în legământul Lui.
38 Totuşi El a fost milos;
le-a iertat nelegiuirea
şi nu i-a nimicit.
De multe ori Şi-a retras mânia
şi nu Şi-a aprins întreaga Lui furie.
39 Şi-a adus aminte că sunt doar carne,
doar o suflare care trece fără să se mai întoarcă.
40 De câte ori s-au răzvrătit împotriva Lui în deşert
şi L-au întristat în pustie!
41 S-au abătut din nou şi L-au ispitit pe Dumnezeu,
îndurerând astfel pe Sfântul lui Israel.
42 Nu şi-au amintit de mâna Lui –
de ziua când i-a izbăvit de duşman,
43 când Şi-a înfăptuit semnele în Egipt
şi minunile Sale în regiunea Ţoan:
44 cum le-a prefăcut râurile în sânge
şi apa din pâraie cu neputinţă de băut;
45 cum a trimis împotriva lor roiuri de muşte care i-a mâncat
şi broaşte care i-au prăpădit;
46 cum le-a dat roadele pradă omizii
şi munca lor pradă lăcustei;
47 cum le-a ruinat viile cu grindină
şi sicomorii cu lapoviţă[c];
48 cum le-a dat vitele pradă grindinei
şi cirezile pradă fulgerului;
49 cum Şi-a trimis împotriva lor mânia Lui aprinsă,
furia, indignarea şi necazul,
îngeri aducători de nenorociri;
50 cum Şi-a dat frâu liber mâniei,
fără să le scape sufletul de la moarte,
dându-le viaţa pe mâna molimei;
51 cum i-a ucis pe toţi întâii născuţi ai Egiptului,
pârga puterii din corturile lui Ham;
52 cum Şi-a condus poporul ca pe o turmă,
i-a călăuzit prin pustie ca pe o turmă de oi;
53 cum i-a condus spre locuri sigure, fără ca ei să se teamă,
în timp ce pe duşmanii lor i-a acoperit marea;
54 cum i-a adus la hotarul ţării Lui sfinte,
la muntele pe care l-a câştigat dreapta Sa;
55 cum a izgonit dinaintea lor neamuri,
cum le-a dat teritoriul în moştenire
şi a pus seminţiile lui Israel să le locuiască corturile.
56 Dar ei L-au ispitit pe Dumnezeul cel Preaînalt
şi s-au răzvrătit împotriva Lui;
nu au păzit mărturiile Lui.
57 S-au depărtat şi au fost necredincioşi asemenea părinţilor lor;
s-au schimbat devenind ca un arc defectuos.
58 L-au întărâtat la mânie prin înălţimile lor,
prin idolii lor I-au stârnit gelozia.
59 Dumnezeu a auzit, a trecut prin tabără
şi l-a respins în întregime pe Israel.
60 Apoi Şi-a părăsit Locuinţa din Şilo,
Cortul în care locuia printre oameni.
61 Şi-a lăsat tăria[d] în captivitate
şi slava – în mâna duşmanului.
62 Şi-a dat poporul pradă sabiei;
Şi-a dezlănţuit mânia asupra moştenirii Lui.
63 Tinerii Lui au fost mistuiţi de foc,
iar fecioarele Lui nu au mai fost lăudate[e].
64 Preoţii Lui au căzut răpuşi de sabie,
iar văduvele Lui nu s-au mai bocit.
65 Atunci Stăpânul S-a trezit ca unul care dormise,
ca viteazul înveselit de vin.
66 Şi-a înlăturat duşmanii;
i-a făcut de batjocură pentru totdeauna.
67 Totuşi El a lepădat cortul lui Iosif
şi nu a ales seminţia lui Efraim.
68 A ales însă seminţia lui Iuda
şi muntele Sion, pe care-l iubeşte.
69 Şi-a zidit Sfântul Lăcaş precum înălţimile
şi precum pământul pe care l-a întărit pe vecie.
70 L-a ales pe David, robul Lui,
l-a luat de la staulele oilor,
71 l-a adus dinapoia mieilor
ca să păstorească pe poporul Său, Iacov,
şi pe Israel, moştenirea Sa.
72 Iar el i-a păstorit în curăţie de inimă
şi i-a condus cu mâini pricepute.

God’s Kindness to Rebellious Israel
A (A)Contemplation[a] of Asaph.
78 Give ear, O my people, to my law;
Incline your ears to the words of my mouth.
2 I will open my mouth in a (B)parable;
I will utter [b]dark sayings of old,
3 Which we have heard and known,
And our fathers have told us.
4 (C)We will not hide them from their children,
(D)Telling to the generation to come the praises of the Lord,
And His strength and His wonderful works that He has done.
5 For (E)He established a testimony in Jacob,
And appointed a law in Israel,
Which He commanded our fathers,
That (F)they should make them known to their children;
6 (G)That the generation to come might know them,
The children who would be born,
That they may arise and declare them to their children,
7 That they may set their hope in God,
And not forget the works of God,
But keep His commandments;
8 And (H)may not be like their fathers,
(I)A stubborn and rebellious generation,
A generation (J)that did not [c]set its heart aright,
And whose spirit was not faithful to God.
9 The children of Ephraim, being armed and [d]carrying bows,
Turned back in the day of battle.
10 (K)They did not keep the covenant of God;
They refused to walk in His law,
11 And (L)forgot His works
And His wonders that He had shown them.
12 (M)Marvelous things He did in the sight of their fathers,
In the land of Egypt, (N)in the field of Zoan.
13 (O)He divided the sea and caused them to pass through;
And (P)He made the waters stand up like a heap.
14 (Q)In the daytime also He led them with the cloud,
And all the night with a light of fire.
15 (R)He split the rocks in the wilderness,
And gave them drink in abundance like the depths.
16 He also brought (S)streams out of the rock,
And caused waters to run down like rivers.
17 But they sinned even more against Him
By (T)rebelling against the Most High in the wilderness.
18 And (U)they tested God in their heart
By asking for the food of their fancy.
19 (V)Yes, they spoke against God:
They said, “Can God prepare a table in the wilderness?
20 (W)Behold, He struck the rock,
So that the waters gushed out,
And the streams overflowed.
Can He give bread also?
Can He provide meat for His people?”
21 Therefore the Lord heard this and (X)was furious;
So a fire was kindled against Jacob,
And anger also came up against Israel,
22 Because they (Y)did not believe in God,
And did not trust in His salvation.
23 Yet He had commanded the clouds above,
(Z)And opened the doors of heaven,
24 (AA)Had rained down manna on them to eat,
And given them of the [e]bread of (AB)heaven.
25 Men ate angels’ food;
He sent them food to [f]the full.
26 (AC)He caused an east wind to blow in the heavens;
And by His power He brought in the south wind.
27 He also rained meat on them like the dust,
Feathered fowl like the sand of the seas;
28 And He let them fall in the midst of their camp,
All around their dwellings.
29 (AD)So they ate and were well filled,
For He gave them their own desire.
30 They were not [g]deprived of their craving;
But (AE)while their food was still in their mouths,
31 The wrath of God came against them,
And slew the stoutest of them,
And struck down the choice men of Israel.
32 In spite of this (AF)they still sinned,
And (AG)did not believe in His wondrous works.
33 (AH)Therefore their days He consumed in futility,
And their years in fear.
34 (AI)When He slew them, then they sought Him;
And they returned and sought earnestly for God.
35 Then they remembered that (AJ)God was their rock,
And the Most High God (AK)their Redeemer.
36 Nevertheless they (AL)flattered Him with their mouth,
And they lied to Him with their tongue;
37 For their heart was not steadfast with Him,
Nor were they faithful in His covenant.
38 (AM)But He, being full of (AN)compassion, forgave their iniquity,
And did not destroy them.
Yes, many a time (AO)He turned His anger away,
And (AP)did not stir up all His wrath;
39 For (AQ)He remembered (AR)that they were but flesh,
(AS)A breath that passes away and does not come again.
40 How often they (AT)provoked[h] Him in the wilderness,
And grieved Him in the desert!
41 Yes, (AU)again and again they tempted God,
And limited the Holy One of Israel.
42 They did not remember His [i]power:
The day when He redeemed them from the enemy,
43 When He worked His signs in Egypt,
And His wonders in the field of Zoan;
44 (AV)Turned their rivers into blood,
And their streams, that they could not drink.
45 (AW)He sent swarms of flies among them, which devoured them,
And (AX)frogs, which destroyed them.
46 He also gave their crops to the caterpillar,
And their labor to the (AY)locust.
47 (AZ)He destroyed their vines with hail,
And their sycamore trees with frost.
48 He also gave up their (BA)cattle to the hail,
And their flocks to fiery [j]lightning.
49 He cast on them the fierceness of His anger,
Wrath, indignation, and trouble,
By sending angels of destruction among them.
50 He made a path for His anger;
He did not spare their soul from death,
But gave [k]their life over to the plague,
51 And destroyed all the (BB)firstborn in Egypt,
The first of their strength in the tents of Ham.
52 But He (BC)made His own people go forth like sheep,
And guided them in the wilderness like a flock;
53 And He (BD)led them on safely, so that they did not fear;
But the sea (BE)overwhelmed their enemies.
54 And He brought them to His (BF)holy border,
This mountain (BG)which His right hand had acquired.
55 (BH)He also drove out the nations before them,
(BI)Allotted them an inheritance by [l]survey,
And made the tribes of Israel dwell in their tents.
56 (BJ)Yet they tested and provoked the Most High God,
And did not keep His testimonies,
57 But (BK)turned back and acted unfaithfully like their fathers;
They were turned aside (BL)like a deceitful bow.
58 (BM)For they provoked Him to anger with their (BN)high places,
And moved Him to jealousy with their carved images.
59 When God heard this, He was furious,
And greatly abhorred Israel,
60 (BO)So that He forsook the tabernacle of Shiloh,
The tent He had placed among men,
61 (BP)And delivered His strength into captivity,
And His glory into the enemy’s hand.
62 (BQ)He also gave His people over to the sword,
And was furious with His inheritance.
63 The fire consumed their young men,
And (BR)their maidens were not given in marriage.
64 (BS)Their priests fell by the sword,
And (BT)their widows made no lamentation.
65 Then the Lord awoke as from sleep,
(BU)Like a mighty man who shouts because of wine.
66 And (BV)He beat back His enemies;
He put them to a perpetual reproach.
67 Moreover He rejected the tent of Joseph,
And did not choose the tribe of Ephraim,
68 But chose the tribe of Judah,
Mount Zion (BW)which He loved.
69 And He built His (BX)sanctuary like the heights,
Like the earth which He has established forever.
70 (BY)He also chose David His servant,
And took him from the sheepfolds;
71 From following (BZ)the ewes that had young He brought him,
(CA)To shepherd Jacob His people,
And Israel His inheritance.
72 So he shepherded them according to the (CB)integrity of his heart,
And guided them by the skillfulness of his hands.

Tell the Coming Generation
A Maskil[a] of (A)Asaph.
78 (B)Give ear, O my people, to my teaching;
incline your ears to the words of my mouth!
2 (C)I will open my mouth (D)in a parable;
I will utter dark sayings from of old,
3 things that we have heard and known,
that our (E)fathers have told us.
4 We will not (F)hide them from their children,
but (G)tell to the coming generation
the glorious deeds of the Lord, and his might,
and (H)the wonders that he has done.
5 He established (I)a testimony in (J)Jacob
and appointed a law in (K)Israel,
which he commanded our fathers
to teach to their children,
6 that (L)the next generation might know them,
the children yet unborn,
and arise and tell them to their children,
7 so that they should set their hope in God
and not forget (M)the works of God,
but (N)keep his commandments;
8 and that they should not be (O)like their fathers,
(P)a stubborn and rebellious generation,
a generation (Q)whose heart was not steadfast,
whose spirit was not faithful to God.

Can he also give bread
or provide meat for his people?”
21 Therefore, when the Lord heard, he was full of wrath;
(AH)a fire was kindled against Jacob;
his anger rose against Israel,
22 because they (AI)did not believe in God
and did not trust his saving power.
23 Yet he commanded the skies above
and (AJ)opened the doors of heaven,
24 and he (AK)rained down on them manna to eat
and gave them (AL)the grain of heaven.
25 Man ate of the bread of (AM)the angels;
he sent them food (AN)in abundance.
26 He (AO)caused the east wind to blow in the heavens,
and by his power he led out the south wind;
27 he rained meat on them like (AP)dust,
winged birds like (AQ)the sand of the seas;
28 he (AR)let them fall in the midst of their camp,
all around their dwellings.
29 And they (AS)ate and were well filled,
for he gave them what they (AT)craved.
30 But before they had satisfied their craving,
(AU)while the food was still in their mouths,
31 the anger of God rose against them,
and he killed (AV)the strongest of them
and laid low (AW)the young men of Israel.
32 In spite of all this, they (AX)still sinned;
(AY)despite his wonders, they did not believe.
33 So he made (AZ)their days (BA)vanish like[c] a breath,[d]
and their years in terror.
34 When he killed them, they (BB)sought him;
they repented and sought God earnestly.
35 They remembered that God was their (BC)rock,
the Most High God their (BD)redeemer.
36 But they (BE)flattered him with their mouths;
they (BF)lied to him with their tongues.
37 Their (BG)heart was not (BH)steadfast toward him;
they were not faithful to his covenant.
38 Yet he, being (BI)compassionate,
(BJ)atoned for their iniquity
and did not destroy them;
he restrained his anger often
and did not stir up all his wrath.
39 He (BK)remembered that they were but (BL)flesh,
(BM)a wind that passes and comes not again.
40 How often they (BN)rebelled against him in the wilderness
and (BO)grieved him in (BP)the desert!
41 They (BQ)tested God again and again
and provoked (BR)the Holy One of Israel.
42 They (BS)did not remember his power[e]
or the day when he redeemed them from the foe,
43 (BT)when he performed his (BU)signs in Egypt
and his (BV)marvels in (BW)the fields of Zoan.
44 He (BX)turned their rivers to blood,
so that they could not drink of their streams.
45 He sent among them swarms of (BY)flies, which devoured them,
and (BZ)frogs, which destroyed them.
46 He gave their crops to (CA)the destroying locust
and the fruit of their labor to the locust.
47 He destroyed their vines with (CB)hail
and their sycamores with frost.
48 He gave over their (CC)cattle to the hail
and their flocks to thunderbolts.
49 He let loose on them his burning anger,
wrath, indignation, and distress,
a company of (CD)destroying angels.
50 He made a path for his anger;
he did not spare them from death,
but gave their lives over to the plague.
51 He struck down every (CE)firstborn in Egypt,
the firstfruits of their strength in the tents of (CF)Ham.
52 Then he led out his people (CG)like sheep
and guided them in the wilderness like a flock.
53 (CH)He led them in safety, so that they (CI)were not afraid,
but (CJ)the sea overwhelmed their enemies.
54 And he brought them to his (CK)holy land,
(CL)to the mountain which his right hand had (CM)won.
55 He (CN)drove out nations before them;
he (CO)apportioned them for a possession
and settled the tribes of Israel in their tents.
56 Yet they (CP)tested and (CQ)rebelled against the Most High God
and did not keep his testimonies,
57 but turned away and acted treacherously like their fathers;
they twisted like (CR)a deceitful bow.
58 For they (CS)provoked him to anger with their (CT)high places;
they (CU)moved him to jealousy with their (CV)idols.
59 When God heard, he was full of (CW)wrath,
and he utterly rejected Israel.
60 He (CX)forsook his dwelling at (CY)Shiloh,
the tent where he dwelt among mankind,
61 and delivered his (CZ)power to captivity,
his (DA)glory to the hand of the foe.
62 He (DB)gave his people over to the sword
and (DC)vented his wrath on his heritage.
63 (DD)Fire devoured their young men,
and their young women had no (DE)marriage song.
64 Their (DF)priests fell by the sword,
and their (DG)widows made no lamentation.
65 Then the Lord (DH)awoke as from sleep,
like a strong man shouting because of wine.
66 And he (DI)put his adversaries to rout;
he put them to everlasting shame.
67 He rejected the tent of (DJ)Joseph;
he did not choose the tribe of Ephraim,
68 but he chose the tribe of Judah,
Mount Zion, which he (DK)loves.
69 He (DL)built his sanctuary like the high heavens,
like the earth, which he has founded forever.
70 He (DM)chose David his servant
and took him from the sheepfolds;
71 from (DN)following the nursing ewes he brought him
to (DO)shepherd Jacob his people,
