90 Ein Gebet von Mose, dem Mann Gottes.
Herr, eine Zuflucht bist du uns gewesen, wo man sicher wohnen kann,
du warst es für uns durch alle Generationen.
2 Ehe die Berge geboren wurden,
ehe du die Erde mit ihren Lebensräumen hervorbrachtest –
da warst du, Gott, schon da von Ewigkeit zu Ewigkeit.
3 Die sterblichen Menschen lässt du zu Staub werden
und sprichst: »Kehrt ´zum Staub` zurück, ihr Menschenkinder!«
4 Denn tausend Jahre sind in deinen Augen so kurz wie ein gerade vergangener Tag[a] –
sie sind nicht länger als ein paar Stunden in der Nacht[b].
5 Du reißt die Menschen aus dem Leben, sie entschlafen,
sie sind so vergänglich wie frisch emporgewachsenes Gras[c],
6 das am Morgen sprießt und blüht
und am Abend welkt und verdorrt.
7 Ja, wir vergehen durch deinen Grimm,
wir erschrecken, wenn dein Zorn uns trifft.
8 Du führst dir unsere Vergehen vor Augen,
selbst unsere verborgenen Sünden kommen vor dir ans Licht.
9 Ach, alle unsere Tage schwinden dahin, weil dein Zorn auf uns lastet,
wir durchleben unsere Jahre so rasch, als wären sie ein kurzer Seufzer.
10 Unser Leben dauert siebzig Jahre,
und wenn wir noch Kraft haben, dann auch achtzig Jahre.
Und was uns daran so wichtig erschien[d], ist letztlich nur Mühe und trügerische Sicherheit.
Denn schnell eilen unsere Tage vorüber, als flögen wir davon.
11 Wer aber erkennt wirklich, wie gewaltig dein Zorn und dein Grimm ist?
Wer begreift, welche Ehrfurcht dir gebührt?[e]
12 Lehre uns zu bedenken, wie wenig Lebenstage uns bleiben,
damit wir ein Herz voll Weisheit erlangen!

Erbarme dich über alle, die dir dienen!
14 Schenk uns schon am Morgen deine reiche Gnade![f]
Dann werden wir jubeln und uns freuen unser Leben lang.
15 Erfreue uns nun eben so viele Tage, wie du uns ´bisher` gedemütigt hast –
für die Jahre, in denen wir Schlimmes erleben mussten, gib uns nun gute Jahre!
16 Lass deine Diener dein mächtiges Handeln erleben,
über ihren Kindern lass deine Herrlichkeit sichtbar werden!
17 So zeige sich nun an uns die Freundlichkeit des Herrn, unseres Gottes!
Gib dem Bestand, was wir mit eigenen Händen tun,
ja, fördere unserer Hände Arbeit!

90 Lord,[b] you have been our dwelling place for all generations.
2 Before the mountains were born,
before you had formed the earth and the world,
even from everlasting to everlasting, you are God.
3 You turn man to destruction, saying,
“Return, you children of men.”
4 For a thousand years in your sight are just like yesterday when it is past,
like a watch in the night.
5 You sweep them away as they sleep.
In the morning they sprout like new grass.
6 In the morning it sprouts and springs up.
By evening, it is withered and dry.
7 For we are consumed in your anger.
We are troubled in your wrath.
8 You have set our iniquities before you,
our secret sins in the light of your presence.
9 For all our days have passed away in your wrath.
We bring our years to an end as a sigh.
10 The days of our years are seventy,
or even by reason of strength eighty years;
yet their pride is but labor and sorrow,
for it passes quickly, and we fly away.
11 Who knows the power of your anger,
your wrath according to the fear that is due to you?
12 So teach us to count our days,
that we may gain a heart of wisdom.
13 Relent, Yahweh![c]
How long?
Have compassion on your servants!
14 Satisfy us in the morning with your loving kindness,
that we may rejoice and be glad all our days.
15 Make us glad for as many days as you have afflicted us,
for as many years as we have seen evil.
16 Let your work appear to your servants,
your glory to their children.
17 Let the favor of the Lord our God be on us.
Establish the work of our hands for us.
Yes, establish the work of our hands.

Psalm 90
A prayer of Moses the man of God.
1 Lord, you have been our dwelling place(A)
throughout all generations.
2 Before the mountains were born(B)
or you brought forth the whole world,
from everlasting to everlasting(C) you are God.(D)
3 You turn people back to dust,
saying, “Return to dust, you mortals.”(E)
4 A thousand years in your sight
are like a day that has just gone by,
or like a watch in the night.(F)
5 Yet you sweep people away(G) in the sleep of death—
they are like the new grass of the morning:
6 In the morning it springs up new,
but by evening it is dry and withered.(H)
7 We are consumed by your anger
and terrified by your indignation.
8 You have set our iniquities before you,
our secret sins(I) in the light of your presence.(J)
9 All our days pass away under your wrath;
we finish our years with a moan.(K)
10 Our days may come to seventy years,(L)
or eighty,(M) if our strength endures;
yet the best of them are but trouble and sorrow,(N)
for they quickly pass, and we fly away.(O)
11 If only we knew the power of your anger!
Your wrath(P) is as great as the fear that is your due.(Q)
