Het Boek
89 Een leerzaam gedicht van de Ezrahiet Ethan.
2 Ik wil alleen nog maar zingen
van de goedheid en genade van de Here,
van alles wat Hij voor mij heeft gedaan.
Van generatie op generatie
zal ik getuigen van uw trouw.
3 Ik zeg dan:
uw goedheid en liefde gelden eeuwig,
tot in de hemel blijkt hoe trouw U bent.
4 De Here zegt:
Ik heb een verbond gesloten
met de man die Ik heb uitgekozen,
dat heb Ik gezworen aan mijn dienaar David.
5 Ik zei tegen hem:
Ik zal uw nageslacht blijven zegenen,
van generatie op generatie
zullen uw kinderen op de troon blijven.
6 Here, daarom wordt uw grote macht
tot in de hemel geprezen.
Alle gelovigen loven U om uw trouw.
7 Kan in de hemel iemand
zich meten met de Here?
Is er op aarde
een god als onze Here?
8 God dwingt ontzag en respect af
van de heilige engelen die Hem omringen.
9 Here, God van de hemelse legers,
wie is zo groot en machtig als U?
Uw trouw omgeeft U.
10 U beheerst de woede van de zee,
als de golven hoog oprijzen, brengt U ze tot rust.
11 U hebt Egypte vernietigd
en al uw vijanden door uw kracht verspreid.
12 De hemel is van U
en ook de aarde behoort U toe.
U hebt de wereld en alles wat erop leeft, geschapen.
13 Van noord tot zuid hebt U alles gemaakt.
De bergen juichen U toe.
14 Uw arm is machtig en uw hand is sterk.
Uw rechterhand is de hoogste op aarde.
15 Alles wat U doet, is recht en rechtvaardig.
Goedheid, liefde en trouw
zijn alleen op U van toepassing.
16 Gelukkig is het volk dat U eert, Here,
zij gaan hun weg met U, in uw licht.
17 De hele dag prijzen zij uw naam
en dankzij uw rechtvaardigheid staan zij sterk.
18 Want U bent het kenmerk van hun kracht,
door uw liefde en goedkeuring ontvangen wij een hoge positie.
19 De Here beschermt ons
en de Heilige God van Israël is onze Koning.
20 In het verleden hebt U tegen uw volgelingen gezegd:
‘Ik heb mijn hulp toegezegd aan een dapper man,
één man uit uw volk koos Ik speciaal uit.
21 Ik vond mijn dienaar David
en heb hem met gewijde olie gezalfd.
22 Mijn hand zal hem ondersteunen
en mijn arm zal hem sterk maken.
23 De vijand zal hem niet in zijn macht krijgen
en geen misdadiger zal hem kwaad kunnen doen.
24 Integendeel, Ik zal zijn tegenstanders voor hem vernietigen.
Wie hem haten, zullen Mij tegenkomen.
25 Maar al mijn trouw en liefde zijn voor hem.
Dankzij Mij bekleedt hij een hoge positie.
26 Ik geef hem zelfs gezag over zeeën en rivieren.
27 Hij zal Mij zijn Vader noemen.
Ik zal zijn God zijn
en de rots waar hij zijn redding vindt.
28 Ik zal hem behandelen als een oudste zoon,
als een van de hoogste koningen op aarde.
29 Mijn goedheid en liefde zijn blijvend voor hem,
mijn verbond met hem kan niet meer worden verbroken.
30 Zijn nageslacht zal altijd blijven bestaan
en zijn troon is onaantastbaar.
31 Als zijn zonen mijn wetten negeren
en niet meer leven volgens mijn leefregels,
32 als zij mijn voorschriften ontwijden
en mijn geboden niet meer houden,
33 zal Ik hen straffen en allerlei plagen sturen.
34 Maar mijn goedheid en liefde voor hem
blijven onveranderd, Ik blijf hem trouw.
35 En ook mijn verbond met hem
blijf Ik trouw, dat is Mij heilig.
Wat Ik heb beloofd, zal Ik doen.
36 Ik heb het immers eens bij Mij Zelf gezworen!
Ik kan David niet in de steek laten.
37 Zijn nageslacht zal altijd voortleven
en zijn troon is onwankelbaar, net als de zon.
38 Net als de maan zal hij er altijd zijn,
want Hij die vanuit de hemel getuigt, is trouw.’
39 Maar toch hebt U uw uitverkorene
van U weggedaan en hem verworpen.
U bent boos op hem geworden.
40 U hebt uw verbond met uw dienaar vernietigd
en hem de kroon van het hoofd gestoten.
41 Zijn muren hebt U afgebroken
en zijn sterke burchten tot puin gemaakt.
42 Mensen die langskwamen
hebben zijn bezittingen geplunderd.
Zijn buren dreven de spot met hem.
43 Zijn tegenstanders bleken sterker
en zijn vijanden overwonnen hem.
44 Ook zijn zwaard gaf hem geen overwinning
en hij moest zich in de oorlogen gewonnen geven.
45 Er was geen eer meer voor hem over
en zijn troon hebt U omver geworpen.
46 Hij werd vroeg oud en werd met schande overladen.
47 Moet dit nog lang duren, Here?
Blijft U Zich voor mij verbergen?
Blijft uw toorn branden als het heetste vuur?
48 Denk er alstublieft aan
dat ik maar een vergankelijk mens ben.
U hebt de mensen Zelf geschapen,
dus U weet hoe kort zij leven.
49 Er is immers geen mens die niet zal sterven?
Niemand kan toch ontkomen aan het dodenrijk?
50 Waar zijn nu de blijken van uw genade, Here?
U hebt die eens aan ons toegezegd,
zelfs met een eed aan David gezworen.
51 Kijk toch, Here, hoe uw dienaren worden bespot
en hoe alle volken ons uitlachen.
52 Hoe ook uw tegenstanders de spot met ons drijven, Here.
Zij drijven de spot met hem die door U tot koning is gezalfd!
53 Alle lof en eer is voor de Here, tot in eeuwigheid.
Laat ieder die dit hoort daarmee instemmen.

89 Von Etan, dem Esrachiter. Zum Nachdenken.
2 Herr, von deiner Gnade will ich für immer singen;
allen kommenden Generationen will ich erzählen, wie treu du bist.
3 Ich weiß: Deine Gnade gilt für alle Zeiten
und deine Treue, solange der Himmel besteht.
4 Du hast gesagt: »Ich habe David auserwählt
und einen Bund mit ihm geschlossen.
Er ist mein Diener, dem ich versprach:
5 Für alle Zeiten sollen deine Nachkommen herrschen,
für immer wird dein Königshaus bestehen!«
6 Herr, der Himmel lobt dich, denn du tust Wunder;
die Schar deiner heiligen Engel[a] preist deine Treue.
7 Denn wer im Himmel ist dir gleich?
Kein himmlisches Wesen[b] ist so mächtig wie du!
8 In der himmlischen Ratsversammlung
fürchten sie Gott mit heiliger Scheu;
ja, Ehrfurcht ergreift alle, die um ihn sind.
9 Herr, du allmächtiger Gott, niemand ist so stark wie du!
Was du auch tust: Auf dich ist Verlass!
10 Du hast Gewalt über die tosenden Meere,
und wenn sich die Wellen auftürmen, bändigst du sie!
11 Du hast das Meerungeheuer[c] besiegt und zermalmt;
machtvoll hast du deine Feinde in alle Winde zerstreut.
12 Dir gehört der Himmel, und dir gehört die Erde,
das weite Land mit all seiner Fülle: Es ist dein Werk.
13 Norden und Süden hast du geschaffen;
der Berg Tabor und der Hermon jubeln dir zu.
14 Wie stark ist dein Arm, wie gewaltig deine Hand!
Du erhebst sie zum Zeichen deines Sieges!
15 Gerechtigkeit und Recht sind die Säulen deiner Herrschaft;
alles, was du tust, zeigt deine Liebe und Treue.
16 Herr, glücklich ist das Volk, das dich mit Jubelrufen feiert!
Deine Nähe macht ihr Leben hell.
17 Jeden Tag bist du ihr Grund zur Freude,
deine Gerechtigkeit erfüllt sie mit Glück.
18 Du selbst bist die Quelle ihrer Kraft,
durch deine Liebe gelangen sie zu Ansehen und Macht.
19 Herr, du heiliger Gott Israels,
dir gehört unser König, der uns beschützt.[d]
20 Vor langer Zeit sprachst du zu denen, die dir die Treue hielten,
in einer Vision hast du ihnen offenbart:
»Ich habe einen jungen Mann aus dem Volk ausgewählt,
den ich zu einem starken Helden machen will.
21 David ist sein Name, ihn habe ich gefunden
und mit heiligem Öl zum König gesalbt.
22 Ich werde ihn mit meiner Kraft begleiten,
stark soll er werden, weil ich ihn stütze.
23 Kein Feind wird ihn jemals überwältigen,
und kein Aufstand kann ihn stürzen.
24 Vor seinen Augen werde ich seine Feinde niedermachen;
alle, die ihn hassen, will ich vernichtend schlagen.
25 Immer will ich treu zu ihm stehen;
und durch mich wird er mächtig werden[e].
26 Ich werde seine Herrschaft bis zum Meer ausdehnen –
ja, über die großen Ströme wird er gebieten.
27 Im Gebet wird er zu mir sagen: ›Du bist mein Vater,
mein Gott und mein Fels, bei dem ich Rettung finde!‹
28 Und ich statte ihn mit allen Rechten eines erstgeborenen Sohnes aus,
ich mache ihn zum größten König der Welt!
29 Für alle Zeiten darf er wissen:
Ich bin ihm gnädig, mein Bund mit ihm wird für immer gelten.
30 Nie wird sein Königsgeschlecht aussterben,
sein Thron wird bleiben, solange der Himmel besteht.
31 Wenn aber seine Nachkommen mein Gesetz übertreten
und meine Weisungen in den Wind schlagen,
32 wenn sie meine Ordnungen missachten
und meine Gebote nicht halten,
33 dann werde ich sie für ihre Treulosigkeit bestrafen
und ihnen ihre Schuld mit Schlägen vergelten.
34 Aber meine Gnade will ich David nie entziehen,
meine Zusagen werde ich halten.
35 Meinen Bund mit ihm werde ich niemals brechen,
was ich versprochen habe, nehme ich nicht zurück!
36 Ein für alle Mal habe ich einen Eid geschworen
und bürge dafür mit meinem heiligen Namen:
Nie werde ich David täuschen!
37-38 Seine Nachkommen werden für alle Zeiten den Thron besitzen.
Ihre Herrschaft soll so beständig sein wie Sonne und Mond –
diese treuen Zeugen hoch oben am Himmel!«
39 Nun aber hast du deinen König doch aufgegeben und verstoßen,
dein Auserwählter bekommt deinen großen Zorn zu spüren.
40 Du hast deinem Diener den Bund aufgekündigt,
seine Krone in den Schmutz getreten und entweiht.
41 Die schützenden Mauern seiner Stadt hast du niedergerissen
und alle seine Festungen in Trümmer gelegt.
42 Jeder, der vorüberzog, hat ihn ausgeplündert,
und bei den Nachbarvölkern erntet er nur Hohn und Spott.
43 Seinen Feinden hast du den Sieg ermöglicht,
jetzt ist ihre Schadenfreude groß.
44 Die Streitkräfte des Königs hast du zerschlagen,
im Kampf hast du ihn im Stich gelassen.
45 Seinen Glanz und sein Ansehen hast du zerstört
und seinen Thron zu Boden gestoßen.
46 Du hast ihn vorzeitig alt werden lassen;
ja, mit Schimpf und Schande hast du ihn bedeckt.
47 Herr, willst du dich für immer verbergen?
Wie lange soll dein Zorn noch brennen?
48 Bedenke doch, wie kurz mein Leben ist!
Nur für einen flüchtigen Augenblick hast du uns Menschen geschaffen.
49 Welcher Mensch ist unsterblich?
Wer kann dem Tod entrinnen?
50 Herr, wo sind die Beweise deiner Liebe geblieben?
Du hast doch David deine Treue zugesichert
und einen Eid darauf geschworen!
51 Höre doch, wie deine Diener beschimpft werden!
Ich leide darunter, dass die Völker uns verachten!
52 Deine Feinde verspotten den König, den du erwählt hast;
sie verhöhnen ihn auf Schritt und Tritt.
53 Gelobt sei der Herr für alle Zeit!
Amen, so soll es sein!

1 I will sing(A) of the Lord’s great love forever;
with my mouth I will make your faithfulness known(B)
through all generations.
2 I will declare that your love stands firm forever,
that you have established your faithfulness in heaven itself.(C)
3 You said, “I have made a covenant with my chosen one,
I have sworn to David my servant,
4 ‘I will establish your line forever
and make your throne firm through all generations.’”[c](D)
5 The heavens(E) praise your wonders, Lord,
your faithfulness too, in the assembly(F) of the holy ones.
6 For who in the skies above can compare with the Lord?
Who is like the Lord among the heavenly beings?(G)
7 In the council(H) of the holy ones(I) God is greatly feared;
he is more awesome than all who surround him.(J)
8 Who is like you,(K) Lord God Almighty?(L)
You, Lord, are mighty, and your faithfulness surrounds you.
9 You rule over the surging sea;
when its waves mount up, you still them.(M)
10 You crushed Rahab(N) like one of the slain;
with your strong arm you scattered(O) your enemies.
11 The heavens are yours,(P) and yours also the earth;(Q)
you founded the world and all that is in it.(R)
12 You created the north and the south;
Tabor(S) and Hermon(T) sing for joy(U) at your name.
13 Your arm is endowed with power;
your hand is strong, your right hand exalted.(V)
14 Righteousness and justice are the foundation of your throne;(W)
love and faithfulness go before you.(X)
15 Blessed are those who have learned to acclaim you,
who walk(Y) in the light(Z) of your presence, Lord.
16 They rejoice in your name(AA) all day long;
they celebrate your righteousness.
17 For you are their glory and strength,(AB)
and by your favor you exalt our horn.[d](AC)
18 Indeed, our shield[e](AD) belongs to the Lord,

19 Once you spoke in a vision,
to your faithful people you said:
“I have bestowed strength on a warrior;
I have raised up a young man from among the people.

with my sacred oil(AH) I have anointed(AI) him.
21 My hand will sustain him;
surely my arm will strengthen him.(AJ)
22 The enemy will not get the better of him;(AK)
the wicked will not oppress(AL) him.
23 I will crush his foes before him(AM)
and strike down his adversaries.(AN)
24 My faithful love will be with him,(AO)
and through my name his horn[f] will be exalted.
25 I will set his hand over the sea,
his right hand over the rivers.(AP)
26 He will call out to me, ‘You are my Father,(AQ)

27 And I will appoint him to be my firstborn,(AT)

28 I will maintain my love to him forever,
and my covenant with him will never fail.(AW)
29 I will establish his line forever,
his throne as long as the heavens endure.(AX)
30 “If his sons forsake my law
and do not follow my statutes,
31 if they violate my decrees
and fail to keep my commands,
32 I will punish their sin with the rod,
their iniquity with flogging;(AY)
33 but I will not take my love from him,(AZ)
nor will I ever betray my faithfulness.
34 I will not violate my covenant
or alter what my lips have uttered.(BA)
35 Once for all, I have sworn by my holiness—
and I will not lie to David—
36 that his line will continue forever
and his throne endure before me like the sun;(BB)
37 it will be established forever like the moon,
the faithful witness in the sky.”(BC)
38 But you have rejected,(BD) you have spurned,
you have been very angry with your anointed one.
39 You have renounced the covenant with your servant
and have defiled his crown in the dust.(BE)
40 You have broken through all his walls(BF)
and reduced his strongholds(BG) to ruins.
41 All who pass by have plundered(BH) him;
he has become the scorn of his neighbors.(BI)
42 You have exalted the right hand of his foes;
you have made all his enemies rejoice.(BJ)
43 Indeed, you have turned back the edge of his sword
and have not supported him in battle.(BK)
44 You have put an end to his splendor
and cast his throne to the ground.
45 You have cut short(BL) the days of his youth;
you have covered him with a mantle of shame.(BM)
46 How long, Lord? Will you hide yourself forever?
How long will your wrath burn like fire?(BN)
47 Remember how fleeting is my life.(BO)
For what futility you have created all humanity!
48 Who can live and not see death,
or who can escape the power of the grave?(BP)
49 Lord, where is your former great love,
which in your faithfulness you swore to David?
50 Remember, Lord, how your servant has[g] been mocked,(BQ)
how I bear in my heart the taunts of all the nations,
51 the taunts with which your enemies, Lord, have mocked,
with which they have mocked every step of your anointed one.(BR)
52 Praise be to the Lord forever!

89 I will sing of the mercies of the Lord for ever: with my mouth will I make known thy faithfulness to all generations.
2 For I have said, Mercy shall be built up for ever: thy faithfulness shalt thou establish in the very heavens.
3 I have made a covenant with my chosen, I have sworn unto David my servant,
4 Thy seed will I establish for ever, and build up thy throne to all generations. Selah.
5 And the heavens shall praise thy wonders, O Lord: thy faithfulness also in the congregation of the saints.
6 For who in the heaven can be compared unto the Lord? who among the sons of the mighty can be likened unto the Lord?
7 God is greatly to be feared in the assembly of the saints, and to be had in reverence of all them that are about him.
8 O Lord God of hosts, who is a strong Lord like unto thee? or to thy faithfulness round about thee?
9 Thou rulest the raging of the sea: when the waves thereof arise, thou stillest them.
10 Thou hast broken Rahab in pieces, as one that is slain; thou hast scattered thine enemies with thy strong arm.
11 The heavens are thine, the earth also is thine: as for the world and the fulness thereof, thou hast founded them.
12 The north and the south thou hast created them: Tabor and Hermon shall rejoice in thy name.
13 Thou hast a mighty arm: strong is thy hand, and high is thy right hand.
14 Justice and judgment are the habitation of thy throne: mercy and truth shall go before thy face.
15 Blessed is the people that know the joyful sound: they shall walk, O Lord, in the light of thy countenance.
16 In thy name shall they rejoice all the day: and in thy righteousness shall they be exalted.
17 For thou art the glory of their strength: and in thy favour our horn shall be exalted.
18 For the Lord is our defence; and the Holy One of Israel is our king.
19 Then thou spakest in vision to thy holy one, and saidst, I have laid help upon one that is mighty; I have exalted one chosen out of the people.
20 I have found David my servant; with my holy oil have I anointed him:
21 With whom my hand shall be established: mine arm also shall strengthen him.
22 The enemy shall not exact upon him; nor the son of wickedness afflict him.
23 And I will beat down his foes before his face, and plague them that hate him.
24 But my faithfulness and my mercy shall be with him: and in my name shall his horn be exalted.
25 I will set his hand also in the sea, and his right hand in the rivers.
26 He shall cry unto me, Thou art my father, my God, and the rock of my salvation.
27 Also I will make him my firstborn, higher than the kings of the earth.
28 My mercy will I keep for him for evermore, and my covenant shall stand fast with him.

30 If his children forsake my law, and walk not in my judgments;
31 If they break my statutes, and keep not my commandments;
32 Then will I visit their transgression with the rod, and their iniquity with stripes.
33 Nevertheless my lovingkindness will I not utterly take from him, nor suffer my faithfulness to fail.
34 My covenant will I not break, nor alter the thing that is gone out of my lips.
35 Once have I sworn by my holiness that I will not lie unto David.
36 His seed shall endure for ever, and his throne as the sun before me.
37 It shall be established for ever as the moon, and as a faithful witness in heaven. Selah.
38 But thou hast cast off and abhorred, thou hast been wroth with thine anointed.
39 Thou hast made void the covenant of thy servant: thou hast profaned his crown by casting it to the ground.
40 Thou hast broken down all his hedges; thou hast brought his strong holds to ruin.
41 All that pass by the way spoil him: he is a reproach to his neighbours.
42 Thou hast set up the right hand of his adversaries; thou hast made all his enemies to rejoice.
43 Thou hast also turned the edge of his sword, and hast not made him to stand in the battle.
44 Thou hast made his glory to cease, and cast his throne down to the ground.
45 The days of his youth hast thou shortened: thou hast covered him with shame. Selah.
46 How long, Lord? wilt thou hide thyself for ever? shall thy wrath burn like fire?
47 Remember how short my time is: wherefore hast thou made all men in vain?
48 What man is he that liveth, and shall not see death? shall he deliver his soul from the hand of the grave? Selah.
49 Lord, where are thy former lovingkindnesses, which thou swarest unto David in thy truth?
50 Remember, Lord, the reproach of thy servants; how I do bear in my bosom the reproach of all the mighty people;
51 Wherewith thine enemies have reproached, O Lord; wherewith they have reproached the footsteps of thine anointed.
