97 ¡El SEÑOR reina!
¡Regocíjese la tierra!
¡Alégrense las muchas costas!
2 Nube y oscuridad hay alrededor de él;
la justicia y el derecho son el fundamento de su trono.
3 El fuego avanza delante de él
y abrasa a sus enemigos en derredor.
4 Sus relámpagos alumbran el mundo;
la tierra mira y se estremece.
5 Delante del Señor los montes se derriten como cera,
delante del SEÑOR de toda la tierra.
6 Los cielos anuncian su justicia,
y todos los pueblos ven su gloria.
7 Avergüéncense todos los que sirven a imágenes de talla,
los que se glorían en los ídolos.
¡Todos los dioses póstrense ante él!
8 Sion escuchó y se alegró;
las hijas de Judá se regocijarán
a causa de tus juicios, oh SEÑOR.
9 Porque tú, oh SEÑOR,
eres supremo sobre toda la tierra; eres muy enaltecido sobre
todos los dioses.
10 Los que aman al SEÑOR
aborrezcan el mal.
Él guarda la vida de sus fieles; los libra de manos de los impíos.
11 La luz está sembrada para el justo,
la alegría para los rectos de corazón.

The Lord rules as king![a]
97 The Lord rules as king!
Everyone on earth should be happy!
The people who live on the shore of the seas
should sing with joy!
2 Dark clouds are all round the Lord.
He rules with justice,
and he is fair to everyone.
3 Fire goes in front of him.
It burns up his enemies on every side.
4 His lightning lights up the whole world.
The earth sees it and it shakes with fear.
5 The mountains melt like butter
in front of the Lord,
when they see the Lord of the whole earth.
6 The sky itself tells us that he is righteous
People from every nation see his glory.
7 Everyone who worships idols should be ashamed.
They should not boast about useless idols!
All gods like that will fall down in front of the Lord.
8 When Zion's people hear about it,
they will be happy.
Yes, the people of Judah will be very happy!
They will be happy, Lord,
because you bring justice.
9 You, Lord, are the Most High God
who rules over all the earth.
You are much greater than any other god![b]
10 If you love the Lord,
then hate anything that is evil.
The Lord protects the lives of those who serve him.
He keeps them safe from the power of wicked people.
11 God's light shines on righteous people.
Good, honest people will be very happy.
12 All you righteous people,
be happy because of what the Lord has done.
Thank him because he is holy.

- 97:1 This is another Royal Psalm. It tells us what happens when everybody sees that God is king. He punishes those people who do bad things. He rescues his people when they are in trouble.
- 97:9 Nations all round Judah had their own gods. Often they used wood, metal or stone to make idols which they worshipped. When God appears, everyone will know that he is the only true God. The Lord God is the Most High God, the God who lives for ever.

1 The Lord reigns,(A) let the earth be glad;(B)
let the distant shores(C) rejoice.
2 Clouds(D) and thick darkness(E) surround him;
righteousness and justice are the foundation of his throne.(F)
3 Fire(G) goes before(H) him
and consumes(I) his foes on every side.
4 His lightning(J) lights up the world;
the earth(K) sees and trembles.(L)
5 The mountains melt(M) like wax(N) before the Lord,
before the Lord of all the earth.(O)
6 The heavens proclaim his righteousness,(P)
and all peoples see his glory.(Q)
7 All who worship images(R) are put to shame,(S)
those who boast in idols(T)—
worship him,(U) all you gods!(V)
8 Zion hears and rejoices
and the villages of Judah are glad(W)
because of your judgments,(X) Lord.
9 For you, Lord, are the Most High(Y) over all the earth;(Z)
you are exalted(AA) far above all gods.
10 Let those who love the Lord hate evil,(AB)
for he guards(AC) the lives of his faithful ones(AD)
and delivers(AE) them from the hand of the wicked.(AF)
11 Light shines[a](AG) on the righteous(AH)
and joy on the upright in heart.(AI)
12 Rejoice in the Lord,(AJ) you who are righteous,
