Psalm 97

The Lord Reigns

97 ^(A)The Lord reigns, ^(B)let the earth rejoice;
    let the many ^(C)coastlands be glad!
²^(D)Clouds and thick darkness are all around him;
    ^(E)righteousness and justice are the foundation of his throne.
³^(F)Fire goes before him
    and burns up his adversaries all around.
⁴His ^(G)lightnings light up the world;
    the earth sees and ^(H)trembles.
⁵The mountains ^(I)melt like ^(J)wax before the Lord,
    before ^(K)the Lord of all the earth.

⁶^(L)The heavens proclaim his righteousness,
    and all ^(M)the peoples see his glory.
⁷All worshipers of images are ^(N)put to shame,
    who make their boast in ^(O)worthless idols;
    ^(P)worship him, all you gods!

⁸Zion hears and ^(Q)is glad,
    and the daughters of Judah rejoice,
    because of your judgments, O Lord.
⁹For you, O Lord, are ^(R)most high over all the earth;
    you are exalted far above ^(S)all gods.

¹⁰O you who love the Lord, ^(T)hate evil!
    He ^(U)preserves the lives of his ^(V)saints;
    he ^(W)delivers them from the hand of the wicked.
¹¹^(X)Light ^(Y)is sown^[a] for the righteous,
    and joy for the upright in heart.
¹²^(Z)Rejoice in the Lord, O you righteous,
    and ^(AA)give thanks to his holy name!

99 ^(A)The Lord reigns; ^(B)let the peoples tremble!
    He ^(C)sits enthroned upon the cherubim; ^(D)let the earth quake!
²The Lord is ^(E)great in Zion;
    he is ^(F)exalted over all the peoples.
³Let them praise your ^(G)great and awesome name!
    ^(H)Holy is he!
⁴^(I)The King in his might ^(J)loves justice.^[a]
    You have established equity;
you have executed justice
    and righteousness in Jacob.
⁵^(K)Exalt the Lord our God;
    ^(L)worship at his ^(M)footstool!
    ^(N)Holy is he!

⁶^(O)Moses and Aaron were among his ^(P)priests,
    Samuel also was among those who ^(Q)called upon his name.
    They ^(R)called to the Lord, and he answered them.
⁷In ^(S)the pillar of the cloud he spoke to them;
    they ^(T)kept his testimonies
    and the statute that he gave them.

⁸O Lord our God, you answered them;
    you were ^(U)a forgiving God to them,
    but ^(V)an avenger of their wrongdoings.
⁹Exalt the Lord our God,
    and worship at his ^(W)holy mountain;
    for the Lord our God is holy!

The Lord's Mercy Remembered

⁷I will recount the steadfast love of the Lord,
    the praises of the Lord,
according to all that the Lord has granted us,
    ^(A)and the great goodness to the house of Israel
that he has granted them according to his compassion,
    according to the abundance of his steadfast love.
⁸For he said, “Surely they are my people,
    children who will not deal falsely.”
    And he became their Savior.
⁹^(B)In all their affliction he was afflicted,^[a]
    and the angel of his presence saved them;
^(C)in his love and in his pity he redeemed them;
    ^(D)he lifted them up and carried them all the days of old.

¹⁰^(E)But they rebelled
    ^(F)and grieved his Holy Spirit;
therefore he turned to be their enemy,
    and himself fought against them.
¹¹Then he remembered ^(G)the days of old,
    of Moses and his people.^[b]
^(H)Where is he who brought them up out of the sea
    with the shepherds of his flock?
Where is he who put in the midst of them
    his Holy Spirit,
¹²who caused his glorious arm
    to go at the right hand of Moses,
^(I)who divided the waters before them
    ^(J)to make for himself an everlasting name,
¹³    who led them through the depths?
Like a horse in the desert,
    they did not stumble.
¹⁴Like livestock that go down into the valley,
    ^(K)the Spirit of the Lord gave them rest.
So you led your people,
    ^(L)to make for yourself a glorious name.

¹⁸This charge ^(A)I entrust to you, Timothy, my child, in accordance with ^(B)the prophecies previously made about you, that by them you may ^(C)wage the good warfare, ¹⁹^(D)holding faith and a good conscience. By rejecting this, some have ^(E)made shipwreck of their faith, ²⁰among whom are ^(F)Hymenaeus and ^(G)Alexander, whom I ^(H)have handed over to Satan that they may learn not to ^(I)blaspheme.

Pray for All People

2 First of all, then, I urge that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and thanksgivings be made for all people, ²^(J)for kings and all who are in high positions, that we may lead a peaceful and quiet life, godly and ^(K)dignified in every way. ³This is good, and ^(L)it is pleasing in the sight of ^(M)God our Savior, ⁴who desires ^(N)all people to be saved and ^(O)to come to ^(P)the knowledge of the truth. ⁵For ^(Q)there is one God, and there is one mediator between God and men, the man^[a] Christ Jesus, ⁶^(R)who gave himself as a ransom for all, which is ^(S)the testimony given ^(T)at the proper time. ⁷^(U)For this I was appointed a preacher and an apostle (^(V)I am telling the truth, I am not lying), ^(W)a teacher of the Gentiles in faith and truth.

⁸I desire then that ^(X)in every place the men should pray, ^(Y)lifting ^(Z)holy hands without anger or quarreling;

Jesus Curses the Fig Tree

¹²^(A)On the following day, when they came from Bethany, ^(B)he was hungry. ¹³^(C)And seeing in the distance a fig tree in leaf, he went to see if he could find anything on it. When he came to it, he found nothing but leaves, for ^(D)it was not the season for figs. ¹⁴And he said to it, “May no one ever eat fruit from you again.” And his disciples heard it.

Jesus Cleanses the Temple

¹⁵^(E)And they came to Jerusalem. And he entered the temple and began to drive out those who sold and those who bought in the temple, and he overturned the tables of ^(F)the money-changers and the seats of those who sold ^(G)pigeons. ¹⁶And he would not allow anyone to carry anything through the temple. ¹⁷And he was teaching them and saying to them, “Is it not written, ^(H)‘My house shall be called a house of prayer for all the nations’? But ^(I)you have made it a den of robbers.” ¹⁸And the chief priests and the scribes heard it and ^(J)were seeking a way to destroy him, for they feared him, because ^(K)all the crowd was astonished at his teaching. ¹⁹^(L)And when evening came they^[a] went out of the city.

The Lesson from the Withered Fig Tree

²⁰^(M)As they passed by in the morning, they saw the fig tree withered away to its roots. ²¹And Peter remembered and said to him, ^(N)“Rabbi, look! The fig tree that you cursed has withered.” ²²And Jesus answered them, “Have ^(O)faith in God. ²³^(P)Truly, I say to you, whoever says to this mountain, ^(Q)‘Be taken up and thrown into the sea,’ and does not ^(R)doubt in his heart, but ^(S)believes that what he says will come to pass, it will be done for him. ²⁴Therefore I tell you, ^(T)whatever you ask in prayer, ^(U)believe that you ^(V)have received^[b] it, and it will be yours. ²⁵And whenever ^(W)you stand praying, ^(X)forgive, ^(Y)if you have anything against anyone, so that ^(Z)your Father also who is in heaven may forgive you your trespasses.”^[c]
