Psalm 90
1599 Geneva Bible

90 1 Moses in his prayer setteth before us the eternal favor of God toward his, 3 who are neither admonished by the brevity of their life,  7 nor by his plagues to be thankful, 12 therefore Moses prayeth God to turn their hearts, and continue his mercies toward them and their posterity forever.

A prayer of Moses, [a]the man of God.

1 Lord, thou hast been our [b]habitation from generation to generation.

2 Before the [c]mountains were made, and before thou hadst formed the earth, and the world, even from everlasting to everlasting thou art our God.

3 Thou [d]turnest man to destruction: again thou sayest, Return ye sons of Adam.

4 [e]For a thousand years in thy sight are as yesterday when it is past, and as a watch in the night.

5 Thou hast [f]overflowed them, they are as a sleep, in the morning he groweth like the grass:

6 In the morning it flourisheth and groweth, but in the evening it is cut down and withereth.

7 For we are [g]consumed by thine anger, and by thy wrath are we troubled.

8 Thou hast set our iniquities before thee, and our secret sins in the light of thy countenance.

9 For all our days are past in thine anger: we have [h]spent our years as a thought.

10 The time of our life is threescore years and ten, and if they be of strength, [i]fourscore years: yet their strength is but labor and sorrow: for it is cut off quickly, and we flee away.

11 [j]Who knoweth the power of thy wrath? for according to thy fear is thine anger.

12 Teach us so to number our days, that we may apply our hearts unto [k]wisdom.

13 Return (O Lord, [l]how long?) and be [m]pacified toward thy servants.

14 Fill us with thy mercy in the morning: so shall we rejoice and be glad all our days?

15 Comfort us according to the days that thou hast afflicted us, and according to the years that we have seen evil.

16 [n]Let thy work be seen toward thy servants, and thy glory upon their [o]children.

17 And let the [p]beauty of the Lord our God be upon us, and [q]direct thou the work of our hands upon us, even direct the work of our hands.

  11. Psalm 90:12 Which is, by considering the shortness of our life, and by meditating the heavenly joys.
  12. Psalm 90:13 Meaning, wilt thou be angry?
  13. Psalm 90:13 Or, take comfort in thy servants.
  14. Psalm 90:16 Even thy mercy, which is the chiefest work.
  15. Psalm 90:16 As God’s promises appertained as well to their posterity, as to them, so Moses prayeth for the posterity.
  16. Psalm 90:17 Meaning, that is was obscured, when he ceaseth to do good to his Church.
  17. Psalm 90:17 For except thou guide us with thine holy Spirit, our enterprises can have no good success.

90 Lord, (B)You have been our [a]dwelling place in all generations.
2 (C)Before the mountains were brought forth,
Or ever You [b]had formed the earth and the world,
Even from everlasting to everlasting, You are God.

3 You turn man to destruction,
And say, (D)“Return, O children of men.”
4 (E)For a thousand years in Your sight
Are like yesterday when it is past,
And like a watch in the night.
5 You carry them away like a flood;
(F)They are like a sleep.
In the morning (G)they are like grass which grows up:
6 In the morning it flourishes and grows up;
In the evening it is cut down and withers.

7 For we have been consumed by Your anger,
And by Your wrath we are terrified.
8 (H)You have set our iniquities before You,
Our (I)secret sins in the light of Your countenance.
9 For all our days have passed away in Your wrath;
We finish our years like a sigh.
10 The days of our lives are seventy years;
And if by reason of strength they are eighty years,
Yet their boast is only labor and sorrow;
For it is soon cut off, and we fly away.
11 Who knows the power of Your anger?
For as the fear of You, so is Your wrath.
12 (J)So teach us to number our days,
That we may gain a heart of wisdom.

13 Return, O Lord!
How long?
And (K)have compassion on Your servants.
14 Oh, satisfy us early with Your mercy,
(L)That we may rejoice and be glad all our days!
15 Make us glad according to the days in which You have afflicted us,
The years in which we have seen evil.
16 Let (M)Your work appear to Your servants,
And Your glory to their children.
17 (N)And let the beauty of the Lord our God be upon us,
And (O)establish the work of our hands for us;
Yes, establish the work of our hands.

Yet their pride is only (T)trouble and tragedy;
For it quickly passes, and we (U)disappear.
11 Who [l]understands the (V)power of Your anger
And Your fury, according to the (W)fear [m]that is due You?

That we may [n](Y)present to You a heart of wisdom.

13 Do (Z)return, Lord; (AA)how long will it be?
And [o]be (AB)sorry for Your servants.
14 (AC)Satisfy us in the morning with Your graciousness,
That we may (AD)sing for joy and rejoice all our days.
15 (AE)Make us glad [p]according to the days You have afflicted us,

16 Let Your (AG)work appear to Your servants
And Your (AH)majesty [r]to their children.
17 May the (AI)kindness of the Lord our God be upon us;

Psalm 90

A prayer of Moses the man of God.

1 Lord, you have been our dwelling place(A)
    throughout all generations.
2 Before the mountains were born(B)
    or you brought forth the whole world,
    from everlasting to everlasting(C) you are God.(D)

3 You turn people back to dust,
    saying, “Return to dust, you mortals.”(E)
4 A thousand years in your sight
    are like a day that has just gone by,
    or like a watch in the night.(F)
5 Yet you sweep people away(G) in the sleep of death—
    they are like the new grass of the morning:
6 In the morning it springs up new,
    but by evening it is dry and withered.(H)

7 We are consumed by your anger
    and terrified by your indignation.
8 You have set our iniquities before you,
    our secret sins(I) in the light of your presence.(J)
9 All our days pass away under your wrath;
    we finish our years with a moan.(K)
10 Our days may come to seventy years,(L)
    or eighty,(M) if our strength endures;
yet the best of them are but trouble and sorrow,(N)
    for they quickly pass, and we fly away.(O)
11 If only we knew the power of your anger!
    Your wrath(P) is as great as the fear that is your due.(Q)
12 Teach us to number our days,(R)
    that we may gain a heart of wisdom.(S)

13 Relent, Lord! How long(T) will it be?
    Have compassion on your servants.(U)
14 Satisfy(V) us in the morning with your unfailing love,(W)
    that we may sing for joy(X) and be glad all our days.(Y)
15 Make us glad for as many days as you have afflicted us,
    for as many years as we have seen trouble.
16 May your deeds be shown to your servants,
    your splendor to their children.(Z)

17 May the favor[a] of the Lord our God rest on us;
    establish the work of our hands for us—
