BOOK IV

(Psalms 90–106)

Psalm 90

Eternal God and Mortal Man

A prayer of Moses, the man of God.

Lord, you have been our refuge[a]
in every generation.(A)
Before the mountains were born,
before you gave birth to the earth and the world,
from eternity to eternity, you are God.(B)

You return mankind to the dust,
saying, “Return, descendants of Adam.”(C)
For in your sight a thousand years
are like yesterday that passes by,
like a few hours of the night.(D)
You end their lives;[b] they sleep.(E)
They are like grass that grows in the morning—
in the morning it sprouts and grows;
by evening it withers and dries up.(F)

For we are consumed by your anger;
we are terrified by your wrath.(G)
You have set our iniquities before you,
our secret sins in the light of your presence.(H)
For all our days ebb away under your wrath;
we end our years like a sigh.(I)
10 Our lives last[c] seventy years
or, if we are strong, eighty years.
Even the best of them are[d] struggle and sorrow;
indeed, they pass quickly and we fly away.(J)
11 Who understands the power of your anger?
Your wrath matches the fear that is due you.(K)
12 Teach us to number our days carefully
so that we may develop wisdom in our hearts.[e](L)

13 Lord—how long?
Turn and have compassion on your servants.(M)
14 Satisfy us in the morning with your faithful love
so that we may shout with joy and be glad all our days.(N)
15 Make us rejoice for as many days as you have humbled us,
for as many years as we have seen adversity.(O)
16 Let your work be seen by your servants,
and your splendor by their children.(P)
17 Let the favor of the Lord our God be on us;
establish for us the work of our hands—
establish the work of our hands!(Q)

The New Command

31 When(A) he had left, Jesus said, “Now the Son of Man(B) is glorified, and God is glorified(C) in him.(D) 32 If God is glorified in him,[a] God will also glorify him in himself and will glorify him at once. 33 Little children, I am with you a little while longer.(E) You will look for me, and just as I told the Jews, so now I tell you, ‘Where I am going, you cannot come.’(F)

34 “I give you a new command: Love one another. Just as I have loved you, you are also to love one another. 35 By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love(G) one another.”

Peter’s Denials Predicted

36 “Lord,” Simon Peter said to him, “where are you going?”

Jesus answered, “Where I am going(H) you cannot follow me now, but you will follow later.”

37 “Lord,” Peter asked, “why can’t I follow you now? I will lay down my life(I) for you.”(J)

38 Jesus replied, “Will you lay down your life for me? Truly I tell you, a rooster will not crow until you have denied me three times.

The Way to the Father

14 “Don’t let your heart be troubled.(K) Believe[b] in God; (L) believe also in me. In my Father’s house are many rooms. If it were not so, would I have told you that I am going (M) to prepare a place for you? If I go away and prepare a place for you, I will come again(N) and take you to myself, so that where I am you may be also.(O) You know the way to where I am going.”[c](P)

“Lord,” Thomas(Q) said, “we don’t know where you’re going. How can we know the way?”

Jesus told him, “I am(R) the way,(S) the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. If you know me, you will also know[d] my Father.(T) From now on you do know him(U) and have seen him.”

Jesus Reveals the Father

“Lord,” said Philip,(V) “show us the Father, and that’s enough for us.”

Jesus said to him, “Have I been among you all this time and you do not know me, Philip? The one who has seen me has seen the Father.(W) How can you say, ‘Show us the Father’? 10 Don’t you believe that I am in the Father and the Father is in me?(X) The words I speak to you I do not speak on my own.(Y) The Father who lives in me does his works.(Z) 11 Believe me that I am in the Father and the Father is in me. Otherwise, believe[e] because of the works themselves.(AA)

Praying in Jesus’s Name

12 “Truly I tell you, the one who believes in me(AB) will also do the works that I do. And he will do even greater works than these,(AC) because I am going to the Father.(AD) 13 Whatever you ask in my name, I will do it so that the Father may be glorified(AE) in the Son.(AF) 14 If you ask me[f] anything in my name,(AG) I will do it.[g](AH)

Another Counselor Promised

15 “If you love me, you will keep[h] my commands.(AI) 16 And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Counselor[i](AJ) to be with you forever. 17 He is the Spirit(AK) of truth.(AL) The world is unable to receive him because it doesn’t see him or know him. But you do know him, because he remains with you and will be[j] in you.(AM)

The Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit

18 “I will not leave you as orphans; I am coming to you. 19 In a little while the world will no longer see me,(AN) but you will see me.(AO) Because I live, you will live(AP) too. 20 On that day you will know that I am in my Father,(AQ) you are in me, and I am in you. 21 The one who has my commands and keeps them is the one who loves me.(AR) And the one who loves me will be loved by my Father.(AS) I also will love him and will reveal myself to him.”

22 Judas(AT) (not Iscariot) said to him, “Lord, how is it you’re going to reveal yourself to us and not to the world?” (AU)

23 Jesus answered, “If anyone loves me, he will keep my word. My Father will love him, and we will come to him and make our home with him.(AV) 24 The one who doesn’t love me will not keep my words. The word that you hear is not mine but is from the Father who sent me.(AW)

25 “I have spoken these things to you while I remain with you. 26 But the Counselor, the Holy Spirit,(AX) whom the Father will send(AY) in my name, will teach you all things(AZ) and remind you of everything I have told you.(BA)

Jesus’s Gift of Peace

27 “Peace I leave with you. My peace I give to you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Don’t let your heart be troubled or fearful.(BB) 28 You have heard me tell you, ‘I am going away(BC) and I am coming to you.’ If you loved me, you would rejoice that I am going to the Father,(BD) because the Father is greater than I.(BE) 29 I have told you now before it happens(BF) so that when it does happen you may believe. 30 I will not talk with you much longer, because the ruler of the world(BG) is coming. He has no power over me.[k](BH) 31 On the contrary, so that the world may know that I love the Father, I do as the Father commanded me.

“Get up; let’s leave this place.
