Book Four

From Everlasting to Everlasting

A (A)Prayer of Moses, the (B)man of God.

90 Lord, you have been our (C)dwelling place[a]
    in all generations.
(D)Before the (E)mountains were brought forth,
    or ever you had formed the earth and the world,
    (F)from everlasting to everlasting you are God.

You return man to dust
    and say, (G)“Return, (H)O children of man!”[b]
For (I)a thousand years in your sight
    are but as (J)yesterday when it is past,
    or as (K)a watch in the night.

You (L)sweep them away as with a flood; they are like (M)a dream,
    like (N)grass that is renewed in the morning:
in (O)the morning it flourishes and is renewed;
    in the evening it (P)fades and (Q)withers.

  2. Psalm 90:3 Or of Adam

13 (A)Return, O Lord! (B)How long?
    Have (C)pity on your servants!
14 Satisfy us in the (D)morning with your steadfast love,
    that we may (E)rejoice and be glad all our days.
15 Make us glad for as many days as you have (F)afflicted us,
    and for as many years as we have seen evil.
16 Let your (G)work be shown to your servants,
    and your glorious power to their children.
17 Let the (H)favor[a] of the Lord our God be upon us,
    and establish (I)the work of our hands upon us;
    yes, establish the work of our hands!

  1. Psalm 90:17 Or beauty

44 Moses came and recited all the words of this song in the hearing of the people, he and (A)Joshua[a] the son of Nun. 45 And when Moses had finished speaking all these words to all Israel, 46 he said to them, (B)“Take to heart all the words by which I am warning you today, (C)that you may command them to your children, that they may be careful to do all the words of this law. 47 For it is no empty word for you, (D)but your very life, and by this word you shall live long in the land that you are going over the Jordan to possess.”

Footnotes

  1. Deuteronomy 32:44 Septuagint, Syriac, Vulgate; Hebrew Hoshea

39 (A)You search the Scriptures because you think that in them you have eternal life; and (B)it is they that bear witness about me, 40 yet (C)you refuse to come to me that you may have life. 41 (D)I do not receive glory from people. 42 But (E)I know that you do not have (F)the love of God within you. 43 I have come (G)in my Father's name, and (H)you do not receive me. (I)If another comes in his own name, you will receive him. 44 How can you believe, when you receive glory from one another and (J)do not seek the glory that comes from (K)the only God? 45 Do not think that I will accuse you to the Father. There is one who accuses you: Moses, (L)on whom you have set your hope. 46 For if you believed Moses, you would believe me; for (M)he wrote of me. 47 But (N)if you do not believe his writings, how will you believe my words?”
