Psalm 89:18-51

¹⁸For our ^(A)shield belongs to the Lord,
our king to ^(B)the Holy One of Israel.

¹⁹^(C)Of old you spoke in a vision to your godly one,^[a] and said:
    “I have ^(D)granted help to one who is ^(E)mighty;
    I have exalted one ^(F)chosen from the people.
²⁰^(G)I have found David, my servant;
    with my holy oil I have ^(H)anointed him,
²¹so that my ^(I)hand shall be established with him;
    my arm also shall strengthen him.
²²The enemy shall not outwit him;
    ^(J)the wicked shall not humble him.
²³I will ^(K)crush his foes before him
    and strike down those who hate him.
²⁴My ^(L)faithfulness and my ^(M)steadfast love shall be with him,
    and in my name shall his ^(N)horn be exalted.
²⁵I will set his hand on ^(O)the sea
    and his right hand on ^(P)the rivers.
²⁶He shall cry to me, ‘You are my ^(Q)Father,
    my God, and ^(R)the Rock of my salvation.’
²⁷And I will make him the ^(S)firstborn,
    ^(T)the highest of the kings of the earth.
²⁸My steadfast love I will keep for him forever,
    and my ^(U)covenant will stand firm^[b] for him.
²⁹I will establish his ^(V)offspring forever
    and his ^(W)throne as ^(X)the days of the heavens.
³⁰^(Y)If his children forsake my law
    and do not walk according to my rules,^[c]
³¹if they violate my statutes
    and do not keep my commandments,
³²then I will punish their transgression with ^(Z)the rod
    and their iniquity with stripes,
³³but I will not remove from him my steadfast love
    or be false to my faithfulness.
³⁴I will not violate my ^(AA)covenant
    or alter the word that went forth from my lips.
³⁵Once for all I have sworn ^(AB)by my holiness;
    I will not ^(AC)lie to David.
³⁶His ^(AD)offspring shall endure forever,
    ^(AE)his ^(AF)throne as long as ^(AG)the sun before me.
³⁷Like ^(AH)the moon it shall be established forever,
    ^(AI)a faithful witness in the skies.” Selah

³⁸But now you have ^(AJ)cast off and rejected;
    you are full of wrath against your ^(AK)anointed.
³⁹You have ^(AL)renounced ^(AM)the covenant with your servant;
    you have ^(AN)defiled his ^(AO)crown in the dust.
⁴⁰You have ^(AP)breached all his walls;
    you have laid his strongholds in ruins.
⁴¹^(AQ)All who pass by plunder him;
    he has become ^(AR)the scorn of his neighbors.
⁴²You have exalted the right hand of his foes;
    you have made all his enemies rejoice.
⁴³You have also turned back the edge of his sword,
    and you have not made him stand in battle.
⁴⁴You have made his splendor to cease
    and cast his throne to the ground.
⁴⁵You have cut short ^(AS)the days of his youth;

⁴⁶^(AU)How long, O Lord? Will you hide yourself forever?
    How long will your wrath ^(AV)burn like fire?

    For what vanity you have created all the children of man!

    Who can deliver his soul from the power of ^(BB)Sheol? Selah

⁴⁹Lord, where is your ^(BC)steadfast love of old,
    which by your ^(BD)faithfulness you swore to David?
⁵⁰^(BE)Remember, O Lord, how your servants are mocked,
    and how I bear in my ^(BF)heart the insults^[d] of all the many nations,
⁵¹with which your enemies mock, O Lord,
    with which they mock ^(BG)the footsteps of your ^(BH)anointed.

The Lord's Prayer

11 Now Jesus^[a] was praying in a certain place, and when he finished, one of his disciples said to him, “Lord, teach us to pray, ^(A)as John taught his disciples.” ²And he said to them, ^(B)“When you pray, say:

^(C)“Father, ^(D)hallowed be ^(E)your name.
^(F)Your kingdom come.
³^(G)Give us ^(H)each day our daily bread,^[b]
⁴and ^(I)forgive us our sins,
for we ourselves forgive everyone who is indebted to us.
And ^(J)lead us not into temptation.”

⁵And he said to them, “Which of you who has a friend will go to him at midnight and say to him, ‘Friend, lend me three loaves, ⁶for a friend of mine has arrived on a journey, and I have nothing to set before him’; ⁷and he will answer from within, ‘Do not bother me; the door is now shut, and my children are with me in bed. I cannot get up and give you anything’? ⁸I tell you, though he will not get up and give him anything ^(K)because he is his friend, yet because of his impudence^[c] he will rise and give him whatever he needs. ⁹And I tell you, ^(L)ask, and ^(M)it will be given to you; ^(N)seek, and you will find; ^(O)knock, and it will be opened to you. ¹⁰For everyone who asks receives, and the one who seeks finds, and to the one who knocks it will be opened. ¹¹What father among you, if his son asks for^[d] a fish, will instead of a fish give him a serpent; ¹²or if he asks for an egg, will give him a scorpion? ¹³If you then, ^(P)who are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will the heavenly Father ^(Q)give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him!”

Jesus and Beelzebul

¹⁴^(R)Now he was casting out a demon that was mute. When the demon had gone out, the mute man spoke, and the people marveled. ¹⁵But some of them said, “He casts out demons ^(S)by Beelzebul, the prince of demons,” ¹⁶while others, ^(T)to test him, kept seeking from him a sign from heaven. ¹⁷^(U)But he, ^(V)knowing their thoughts, said to them, “Every kingdom divided against itself is laid waste, and a divided household falls. ¹⁸And if Satan also is divided against himself, how will his kingdom stand? For you say that I cast out demons by Beelzebul. ¹⁹And if I cast out demons by Beelzebul, ^(W)by whom do ^(X)your sons cast them out? Therefore they will be your judges. ²⁰But if it is by ^(Y)the finger of God that I cast out demons, then ^(Z)the kingdom of God has come upon you. ²¹When a strong man, fully armed, guards his own palace, his goods are safe; ²²^(AA)but when one stronger than he attacks him and ^(AB)overcomes him, he takes away his ^(AC)armor in which he trusted and ^(AD)divides his spoil. ²³^(AE)Whoever is not with me is against me, and whoever does not gather with me scatters.

Return of an Unclean Spirit

²⁴^(AF)“When the unclean spirit has gone out of a person, it passes through ^(AG)waterless places seeking rest, and finding none it says, ‘I will return to my house from which I came.’ ²⁵And when it comes, it finds the house swept and put in order. ²⁶Then it goes and brings seven other spirits more evil than itself, and they enter and dwell there. And ^(AH)the last state of that person is worse than the first.”

True Blessedness

²⁷As he said these things, ^(AI)a woman in the crowd raised her voice and said to him, ^(AJ)“Blessed is the womb that bore you, and the breasts at which you nursed!” ²⁸But he said, ^(AK)“Blessed rather are those ^(AL)who hear the word of God and ^(AM)keep it!”
