Psalm 86

Psalm 86

A prayer of David.

¹Hear me, Lord, and answer^(A) me,
    for I am poor and needy.
²Guard my life, for I am faithful to you;
    save your servant who trusts in you.^(B)
You are my God; ³have mercy^(C) on me, Lord,
    for I call^(D) to you all day long.
⁴Bring joy to your servant, Lord,
    for I put my trust^(E) in you.

⁵You, Lord, are forgiving and good,
    abounding in love^(F) to all who call to you.
⁶Hear my prayer, Lord;
    listen to my cry^(G) for mercy.
⁷When I am in distress,^(H) I call^(I) to you,
    because you answer^(J) me.

⁸Among the gods^(K) there is none like you,^(L) Lord;
    no deeds can compare with yours.
⁹All the nations you have made
    will come^(M) and worship^(N) before you, Lord;
    they will bring glory^(O) to your name.
¹⁰For you are great^(P) and do marvelous deeds;^(Q)
    you alone^(R) are God.

¹¹Teach me your way,^(S) Lord,
    that I may rely on your faithfulness;^(T)
give me an undivided^(U) heart,
    that I may fear^(V) your name.
¹²I will praise you, Lord my God, with all my heart;^(W)
    I will glorify your name forever.
¹³For great is your love toward me;
    you have delivered me^(X) from the depths,
    from the realm of the dead.^(Y)

¹⁴Arrogant foes are attacking me, O God;
    ruthless people are trying to kill me—
    they have no regard for you.^(Z)
¹⁵But you, Lord, are a compassionate and gracious^(AA) God,
    slow to anger,^(AB) abounding^(AC) in love and faithfulness.^(AD)
¹⁶Turn to me^(AE) and have mercy^(AF) on me;
    show your strength^(AG) in behalf of your servant;
save me, because I serve you
    just as my mother did.^(AH)
¹⁷Give me a sign^(AI) of your goodness,
    that my enemies may see it and be put to shame,
    for you, Lord, have helped me and comforted me.

Matthew 26:51-75

New International Version

⁵¹With that, one of Jesus’ companions reached for his sword,^(A) drew it out and struck the servant of the high priest, cutting off his ear.^(B)

⁵²“Put your sword back in its place,” Jesus said to him, “for all who draw the sword will die by the sword.^(C) ⁵³Do you think I cannot call on my Father, and he will at once put at my disposal more than twelve legions of angels?^(D) ⁵⁴But how then would the Scriptures be fulfilled^(E) that say it must happen in this way?”

⁵⁵In that hour Jesus said to the crowd, “Am I leading a rebellion, that you have come out with swords and clubs to capture me? Every day I sat in the temple courts teaching,^(F) and you did not arrest me. ⁵⁶But this has all taken place that the writings of the prophets might be fulfilled.”^(G) Then all the disciples deserted him and fled.

Jesus Before the Sanhedrin^(H)

⁵⁷Those who had arrested Jesus took him to Caiaphas^(I) the high priest, where the teachers of the law and the elders had assembled. ⁵⁸But Peter followed him at a distance, right up to the courtyard of the high priest.^(J) He entered and sat down with the guards^(K) to see the outcome.

⁵⁹The chief priests and the whole Sanhedrin^(L) were looking for false evidence against Jesus so that they could put him to death. ⁶⁰But they did not find any, though many false witnesses^(M) came forward.

Finally two^(N) came forward ⁶¹and declared, “This fellow said, ‘I am able to destroy the temple of God and rebuild it in three days.’”^(O)

⁶²Then the high priest stood up and said to Jesus, “Are you not going to answer? What is this testimony that these men are bringing against you?” ⁶³But Jesus remained silent.^(P)

The high priest said to him, “I charge you under oath^(Q) by the living God:^(R) Tell us if you are the Messiah,^(S) the Son of God.”^(T)

⁶⁴“You have said so,”^(U) Jesus replied. “But I say to all of you: From now on you will see the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of the Mighty One^(V) and coming on the clouds of heaven.”^[a]^(W)

⁶⁵Then the high priest tore his clothes^(X) and said, “He has spoken blasphemy! Why do we need any more witnesses? Look, now you have heard the blasphemy. ⁶⁶What do you think?”

“He is worthy of death,”^(Y) they answered.

⁶⁷Then they spit in his face and struck him with their fists.^(Z) Others slapped him ⁶⁸and said, “Prophesy to us, Messiah. Who hit you?”^(AA)

Peter Disowns Jesus^(AB)

⁶⁹Now Peter was sitting out in the courtyard, and a servant girl came to him. “You also were with Jesus of Galilee,” she said.

⁷⁰But he denied it before them all. “I don’t know what you’re talking about,” he said.

⁷¹Then he went out to the gateway, where another servant girl saw him and said to the people there, “This fellow was with Jesus of Nazareth.”

⁷²He denied it again, with an oath: “I don’t know the man!”

⁷³After a little while, those standing there went up to Peter and said, “Surely you are one of them; your accent gives you away.”

⁷⁴Then he began to call down curses, and he swore to them, “I don’t know the man!”

Immediately a rooster crowed. ⁷⁵Then Peter remembered the word Jesus had spoken: “Before the rooster crows, you will disown me three times.”^(AC) And he went outside and wept bitterly.
