Psalm 85

Prayer for the Restoration of God’s Favor

To the leader. Of the Korahites. A Psalm.

Lord, you were favorable to your land;
    you restored the fortunes of Jacob.(A)
You forgave the iniquity of your people;
    you pardoned all their sin. Selah(B)
You withdrew all your wrath;
    you turned from your hot anger.

Restore us again, O God of our salvation,
    and put away your indignation toward us.
Will you be angry with us forever?
    Will you prolong your anger to all generations?(C)
Will you not revive us again,
    so that your people may rejoice in you?(D)
Show us your steadfast love, O Lord,
    and grant us your salvation.

Let me hear what God the Lord will speak,
    for he will speak peace to his people,
    to his faithful, to those who turn to him in their hearts.[a](E)
Surely his salvation is at hand for those who fear him,
    that his glory may dwell in our land.(F)

10 Steadfast love and faithfulness will meet;
    righteousness and peace will kiss each other.(G)
11 Faithfulness will spring up from the ground,
    and righteousness will look down from the sky.
12 The Lord will give what is good,
    and our land will yield its increase.(H)
13 Righteousness will go before him
    and will make a path for his steps.(I)

The Question about Paying Taxes

15 Then the Pharisees went and plotted to entrap him in what he said. 16 So they sent their disciples to him, along with the Herodians, saying, “Teacher, we know that you are sincere, and teach the way of God in accordance with truth, and show deference to no one, for you do not regard people with partiality.(A) 17 Tell us, then, what you think. Is it lawful to pay taxes to Caesar or not?”(B) 18 But Jesus, aware of their malice, said, “Why are you putting me to the test, you hypocrites? 19 Show me the coin used for the tax.” And they brought him a denarius. 20 Then he said to them, “Whose head is this and whose title?” 21 They answered, “Caesar’s.” Then he said to them, “Give therefore to Caesar the things that are Caesar’s and to God the things that are God’s.”(C) 22 When they heard this, they were amazed, and they left him and went away.
