Psalm 80[a]
For the director of music. To the tune of “The Lilies of the Covenant.” Of Asaph. A psalm.
1 Hear us, Shepherd of Israel,
you who lead Joseph like a flock.(A)
You who sit enthroned between the cherubim,(B)
shine forth 2 before Ephraim, Benjamin and Manasseh.(C)
Awaken(D) your might;
come and save us.(E)
4 How long,(I) Lord God Almighty,
will your anger smolder(J)
against the prayers of your people?
5 You have fed them with the bread of tears;(K)
you have made them drink tears by the bowlful.(L)
6 You have made us an object of derision[b] to our neighbors,
and our enemies mock us.(M)
7 Restore us, God Almighty;
make your face shine on us,
that we may be saved.(N)
8 You transplanted a vine(O) from Egypt;
you drove out(P) the nations and planted(Q) it.
9 You cleared the ground for it,
and it took root and filled the land.
10 The mountains were covered with its shade,
the mighty cedars with its branches.
11 Its branches reached as far as the Sea,[c]
its shoots as far as the River.[d](R)
12 Why have you broken down its walls(S)
so that all who pass by pick its grapes?
13 Boars from the forest ravage(T) it,
and insects from the fields feed on it.
14 Return to us, God Almighty!
Look down from heaven and see!(U)
Watch over this vine,
15 the root your right hand has planted,
the son[e] you have raised up for yourself.
16 Your vine is cut down, it is burned with fire;(V)
at your rebuke(W) your people perish.
17 Let your hand rest on the man at your right hand,
the son of man(X) you have raised up for yourself.
18 Then we will not turn away from you;
revive(Y) us, and we will call on your name.
19 Restore us, Lord God Almighty;
make your face shine on us,
that we may be saved.

2 O Berger d’Israël, ╵tends vers moi ton oreille,
toi qui conduis Joseph[c] ╵comme un troupeau !
O toi qui sièges ╵entre les chérubins[d],
parais dans ta splendeur
3 aux regards d’Ephraïm, ╵de Benjamin, ╵de Manassé[e] ! ╵Déploie ta force !
Viens nous sauver !
4 O Dieu, rétablis-nous,
montre-toi favorable, ╵et nous serons sauvés !
5 O Eternel, ╵Dieu des armées célestes,
jusques à quand ╵seras-tu en colère
en réponse aux prières ╵que t’adresse ton peuple ?
6 Tu le nourris ╵d’un pain trempé de pleurs.
Tu lui fais boire ╵des larmes sans mesure.
7 Tu fais de nous ╵un brandon de discorde ╵pour nos voisins !
Et nos ennemis se moquent de nous.
8 Dieu des armées célestes, ╵rétablis-nous,
montre-toi favorable, ╵et nous serons sauvés !
9 Tu avais arraché ╵de l’Egypte une vigne[f],
puis tu as chassé des peuplades, ╵et tu l’as replantée.
10 Tu avais déblayé ╵le terrain devant elle
et elle a pris racine ╵profondément en terre, ╵puis elle a rempli le pays.
11 Son ombre couvrait les montagnes,
ses sarments ressemblaient ╵aux plus grands cèdres.
12 Elle étendait ╵ses vrilles vers la mer
et ses rejets ╵allaient jusqu’à l’Euphrate[g].
13 Pourquoi as-tu ╵défoncé ses clôtures ?
Tous les passants ╵viennent y grappiller.
14 Le sanglier ╵qui sort de la forêt ╵la retourne en tous sens.
Les animaux des champs ╵viennent y pâturer.
15 Dieu des armées célestes, ╵reviens enfin !
Jette un regard ╵du haut du ciel et vois !
Viens t’occuper ╵de cette vigne !
16 Viens protéger ╵ce cep que tu as toi-même planté,
ce rejeton[h] ╵que tu as fait grandir pour toi !
17 On y a mis le feu, ╵elle a été coupée !
Que sous l’effet de ta colère ╵les ennemis périssent !
18 Protège l’homme ╵qui se tient à ta droite,
cet homme que pour ton service ╵tu as fortifié.
19 Et, jamais plus, ╵nous ne te quitterons.
Fais-nous revivre ╵et nous t’invoquerons !
20 O Eternel, ╵Dieu des armées célestes, ╵rétablis-nous,
montre-toi favorable, ╵et nous serons sauvés !

- 80.2 Père d’Ephraïm et de Manassé (Gn 48.8-20) peut désigner les dix tribus du Nord, mais comme Joseph fut établi « fils aîné » par Jacob (Gn 48.5), ce nom peut aussi se référer à tout Israël.
- 80.2 Les deux figures ailées qui dominaient le coffre sacré (Ex 25.22 ; 1 R 6.23-28).
- 80.3 Les trois tribus des descendants de Rachel qui suivaient immédiatement le coffre sacré (Nb 10.21-24) dans la marche vers le pays promis.
- 80.9 Israël est plusieurs fois comparé à une vigne (voir Es 5.1-7 ; 27.2-6 ; Ez 15.1-8 ; Jn 15.1-10).
- 80.12 La mer Méditerranée et l’Euphrate étaient les limites extrêmes du royaume d’Israël sous David et Salomon.
- 80.16 Il y a sans doute ici un jeu de mots sur le double sens du terme : le rejeton est le « rameau de Joseph » (Gn 49.22) mais aussi le rejeton davidique dont il est question au v. 18.

80 Give ear, O Shepherd of Israel,
you who lead (C)Joseph like (D)a flock.
You who are (E)enthroned upon the cherubim, (F)shine forth.
2 Before (G)Ephraim and Benjamin and Manasseh,
(H)stir up your might
and (I)come to save us!
4 O (L)Lord God of hosts,
(M)how long will you be angry with your people's prayers?
5 You have fed them with (N)the bread of tears
and given them tears to drink in full measure.
6 (O)You make us an object of contention for our (P)neighbors,
and our enemies laugh among themselves.
7 (Q)Restore us, O God of hosts;
let your face shine, that we may be saved!
8 You brought (R)a vine out of Egypt;
you (S)drove out the nations and planted it.
9 You (T)cleared the ground for it;
it took deep root and filled the land.
10 The mountains were covered with its shade,
the mighty cedars with its branches.
11 It sent out its branches to (U)the sea
and its shoots to (V)the River.[b]
12 Why then have you (W)broken down its walls,
so that all who pass along the way pluck its fruit?
13 (X)The boar from the forest ravages it,
and all that move in the field feed on it.
14 Turn again, O God of hosts!
(Y)Look down from heaven, and see;
have regard for this vine,
15 the stock that your right hand planted,
and for the son whom you made strong for yourself.
16 They have (Z)burned it with fire; they have (AA)cut it down;
may they perish at (AB)the rebuke of your face!
17 But (AC)let your hand be on the man of your right hand,
the son of man whom you have made strong for yourself!
18 Then we shall not turn back from you;
(AD)give us life, and we will call upon your name!
19 (AE)Restore us, O Lord God of hosts!
Let your face shine, that we may be saved!
