A Dirge and a Prayer for Israel, Destroyed by Enemies
A Psalm of Asaph.
79 O God, the [a]nations have come into (A)Your inheritance;
Your holy temple they have defiled;
(B)They have laid Jerusalem [b]in heaps.
2 (C)The dead bodies of Your servants
They have given as food for the birds of the heavens,
The flesh of Your saints to the beasts of the earth.
3 Their blood they have shed like water all around Jerusalem,
And there was no one to bury them.
4 We have become a reproach to our (D)neighbors,
A scorn and derision to those who are around us.
5 (E)How long, Lord?
Will You be angry forever?
Will Your (F)jealousy burn like fire?
6 (G)Pour out Your wrath on the [c]nations that (H)do not know You,
And on the kingdoms that (I)do not call on Your name.
7 For they have devoured Jacob,
And laid waste his dwelling place.
8 (J)Oh, do not remember [d]former iniquities against us!
Let Your tender mercies come speedily to meet us,
For we have been brought very low.
9 Help us, O God of our salvation,
For the glory of Your name;
And deliver us, and provide atonement for our sins,
(K)For Your name’s sake!
10 (L)Why should the [e]nations say,
“Where is their God?”
Let there be known among the nations in our sight
The avenging of the blood of Your servants which has been shed.
11 Let (M)the groaning of the prisoner come before You;
According to the greatness of Your [f]power
Preserve those who are appointed to die;
12 And return to our neighbors (N)sevenfold into their bosom
(O)Their reproach with which they have reproached You, O Lord.
13 So (P)we, Your people and sheep of Your pasture,
Will give You thanks forever;

Stir up Your strength,
And come and save us!
4 O Lord God of hosts,
(Y)How long will You be angry
Against the prayer of Your people?
5 (Z)You have fed them with the bread of tears,
And given them tears to drink in great measure.
6 You have made us a strife to our neighbors,
And our enemies laugh among themselves.
7 Restore us, O God of hosts;
Cause Your face to shine,
And we shall be saved!
8 You have brought (AA)a vine out of Egypt;
(AB)You have cast out the [i]nations, and planted it.
9 You prepared room for it,
And caused it to take deep root,
And it filled the land.
10 The hills were covered with its shadow,

And her branches to [l]the River.
12 Why have You (AD)broken down her [m]hedges,
So that all who pass by the way pluck her fruit?
13 The boar out of the woods uproots it,
And the wild beast of the field devours it.
14 Return, we beseech You, O God of hosts;

And visit this vine
15 And the vineyard which Your right hand has planted,
And the branch that You made strong (AF)for Yourself.
16 It is burned with fire, it is cut down;
(AG)They perish at the rebuke of Your countenance.
17 (AH)Let Your hand be upon the man of Your right hand,
Upon the son of man whom You made strong for Yourself.
18 Then we will not turn back from You;
Revive us, and we will call upon Your name.
19 Restore us, O Lord God of hosts;

And we shall be saved!

81 Sing aloud to God our strength;
Make a joyful shout to the God of Jacob.
2 Raise a song and strike the timbrel,
The pleasant harp with the lute.
3 Blow the trumpet at the time of the New Moon,
At the full moon, on our solemn feast day.
4 For (AJ)this is a statute for Israel,
A law of the God of Jacob.
5 This He established in Joseph as a testimony,
When He went throughout the land of Egypt,
(AK)Where I heard a language I did not understand.
6 “I removed his shoulder from the burden;
His hands were freed from the baskets.
7 (AL)You called in trouble, and I delivered you;
(AM)I answered you in the secret place of thunder;
I (AN)tested you at the waters of [o]Meribah. Selah
8 “Hear,(AO) O My people, and I will admonish you!
O Israel, if you will listen to Me!
9 There shall be no (AP)foreign god among you;
Nor shall you worship any foreign god.

Who brought you out of the land of Egypt;

11 “But My people would not heed My voice,
And Israel would have (AS)none of Me.
12 (AT)So I gave them over to [p]their own stubborn heart,
To walk in their own counsels.
13 “Oh,(AU) that My people would listen to Me,
That Israel would walk in My ways!
14 I would soon subdue their enemies,
And turn My hand against their adversaries.
15 (AV)The haters of the Lord would pretend submission to Him,
But their [q]fate would endure forever.
16 He would (AW)have fed them also with [r]the finest of wheat;
And with honey (AX)from the rock I would have satisfied you.”

He judges among (AZ)the [t]gods.
2 How long will you judge unjustly,
And (BA)show partiality to the wicked? Selah
3 [u]Defend the poor and fatherless;
Do justice to the afflicted and (BB)needy.
4 Deliver the poor and needy;
Free them from the hand of the wicked.
5 They do not know, nor do they understand;
They walk about in darkness;

And all of you are children of the Most High.
7 But you shall die like men,
And fall like one of the princes.”

That the name of Israel may be remembered no more.”

Moab and the Hagrites;
7 Gebal, Ammon, and Amalek;

12 Who said, “Let us take for ourselves
The pastures of God for a possession.”

14 As the fire burns the woods,

15 So pursue them with Your tempest,
And frighten them with Your storm.
16 Fill their faces with shame,
That they may seek Your name, O Lord.

Yes, let them be put to shame and perish,

For the courts of the Lord;

And the swallow a nest for herself,
Where she may lay her young—
Even Your altars, O Lord of hosts,
My King and my God.
4 Blessed are those who dwell in Your (BY)house;
They will still be praising You. Selah
5 Blessed is the man whose strength is in You,
Whose heart is set on pilgrimage.

They make it a spring;

85 Lord, You have been favorable to Your land;

2 You have forgiven the iniquity of Your people;

4 (CJ)Restore us, O God of our salvation,
And cause Your anger toward us to cease.

Will You prolong Your anger to all generations?

Even from everlasting to everlasting, You are God.
3 You turn man to destruction,

4 (FH)For a thousand years in Your sight
Are like yesterday when it is past,
And like a watch in the night.
5 You carry them away like a flood;

7 For we have been consumed by Your anger,

Safety of Abiding in the Presence of God

My God, in Him I will trust.”

And from the perilous pestilence.

And under His wings you shall take refuge;
His truth shall be your shield and [bp]buckler.

Nor of the arrow that flies by day,

7 A thousand may fall at your side,
And ten thousand at your right hand;
But it shall not come near you.

92 It is (GH)good to give thanks to the Lord,
And to sing praises to Your name, O Most High;
2 To (GI)declare Your lovingkindness in the morning,
And Your faithfulness every night,

On the lute,
And on the harp,
With harmonious sound.
4 For You, Lord, have made me glad through Your work;
I will triumph in the works of Your hands.

The Eternal Reign of the Lord
93 The (GW)Lord reigns, He is clothed with majesty;
The Lord is clothed,

Surely the world is established, so that it cannot be [by]moved.

You are from everlasting.
3 The floods have [bz]lifted up, O Lord,
The floods have lifted up their voice;
The floods lift up their waves.

Than the noise of many waters,

And praise Him in the company of the elders.
33 He (RJ)turns rivers into a wilderness,
And the watersprings into dry ground;

For the wickedness of those who dwell in it.

And dry land into watersprings.
36 There He makes the hungry dwell,
That they may establish a city for a dwelling place,

That they may yield a fruitful harvest.
