⁸ Do not hold against us the sins of past generations;^(A)
    may your mercy come quickly to meet us,
    for we are in desperate need.^(B)
9 Help us,^(C) God our Savior,
    for the glory of your name;
deliver us and forgive our sins
    for your name’s sake.^(D)
10 Why should the nations say,
    “Where is their God?”^(E)

Before our eyes, make known among the nations
    that you avenge^(F) the outpoured blood^(G) of your servants.
¹¹ May the groans of the prisoners come before you;
    with your strong arm preserve those condemned to die.
¹² Pay back into the laps^(H) of our neighbors seven times^(I)
    the contempt they have hurled at you, Lord.
¹³ Then we your people, the sheep of your pasture,^(J)
    will praise you forever;^(K)
from generation to generation
    we will proclaim your praise.

“My heart rejoices^(B) in the Lord;
    in the Lord my horn^[a](C) is lifted high.
My mouth boasts^(D) over my enemies,^(E)
    for I delight in your deliverance.

² “There is no one holy^(F) like^(G) the Lord;
    there is no one besides you;
    there is no Rock^(H) like our God.

³ “Do not keep talking so proudly
    or let your mouth speak such arrogance,^(I)
for the Lord is a God who knows,^(J)
    and by him deeds^(K) are weighed.^(L)

⁴ “The bows of the warriors are broken,^(M)
    but those who stumbled are armed with strength.^(N)
5 Those who were full hire themselves out for food,
    but those who were hungry^(O) are hungry no more.
She who was barren^(P) has borne seven children,
    but she who has had many sons pines away.

⁶ “The Lord brings death and makes alive;^(Q)
    he brings down to the grave and raises up.^(R)
7 The Lord sends poverty and wealth;^(S)
    he humbles and he exalts.^(T)
8 He raises^(U) the poor^(V) from the dust^(W)
    and lifts the needy^(X) from the ash heap;
he seats them with princes
    and has them inherit a throne of honor.^(Y)

“For the foundations^(Z) of the earth are the Lord’s;
    on them he has set the world.
⁹ He will guard the feet^(AA) of his faithful servants,^(AB)
    but the wicked will be silenced in the place of darkness.^(AC)

“It is not by strength^(AD) that one prevails;
¹⁰     those who oppose the Lord will be broken.^(AE)
The Most High will thunder^(AF) from heaven;
    the Lord will judge^(AG) the ends of the earth.

“He will give strength^(AH) to his king
    and exalt the horn^(AI) of his anointed.”

Praise the Lord, you his servants;^(B)
    praise the name of the Lord.
² Let the name of the Lord be praised,^(C)
    both now and forevermore.^(D)
3 From the rising of the sun^(E) to the place where it sets,
    the name of the Lord is to be praised.

⁴ The Lord is exalted^(F) over all the nations,
    his glory above the heavens.^(G)
5 Who is like the Lord our God,^(H)
    the One who sits enthroned^(I) on high,^(J)
6 who stoops down to look^(K)
    on the heavens and the earth?

⁷ He raises the poor^(L) from the dust
    and lifts the needy^(M) from the ash heap;
⁸ he seats them^(N) with princes,
    with the princes of his people.
⁹ He settles the childless^(O) woman in her home
    as a happy mother of children.

Praise the Lord.

“My soul glorifies the Lord^(F)
47     and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior,^(G)
48 for he has been mindful
    of the humble state of his servant.^(H)
From now on all generations will call me blessed,^(I)
49     for the Mighty One has done great things^(J) for me—
    holy is his name.^(K)
50 His mercy extends to those who fear him,
    from generation to generation.^(L)
51 He has performed mighty deeds with his arm;^(M)
    he has scattered those who are proud in their inmost thoughts.^(N)
52 He has brought down rulers from their thrones
    but has lifted up the humble.^(O)
53 He has filled the hungry with good things^(P)
    but has sent the rich away empty.
⁵⁴ He has helped his servant Israel,
    remembering to be merciful^(Q)
55 to Abraham and his descendants^(R) forever,
    just as he promised our ancestors.”
