Psalm 79:1-9

Psalm 79

A psalm of Asaph.

¹O God, the nations have invaded your inheritance;^(A)
    they have defiled^(B) your holy temple,
    they have reduced Jerusalem to rubble.^(C)
²They have left the dead bodies of your servants
    as food for the birds of the sky,^(D)
    the flesh of your own people for the animals of the wild.^(E)
³They have poured out blood like water
    all around Jerusalem,
    and there is no one to bury^(F) the dead.^(G)
⁴We are objects of contempt to our neighbors,
    of scorn^(H) and derision to those around us.^(I)

⁵How long,^(J) Lord? Will you be angry^(K) forever?
    How long will your jealousy burn like fire?^(L)
⁶Pour out your wrath^(M) on the nations
    that do not acknowledge^(N) you,
on the kingdoms
    that do not call on your name;^(O)
⁷for they have devoured^(P) Jacob
    and devastated his homeland.

⁸Do not hold against us the sins of past generations;^(Q)
    may your mercy come quickly to meet us,
    for we are in desperate need.^(R)
⁹Help us,^(S) God our Savior,
    for the glory of your name;
deliver us and forgive our sins
    for your name’s sake.^(T)

Daniel 9:3-10

³So I turned to the Lord God and pleaded with him in prayer and petition, in fasting,^(A) and in sackcloth and ashes.^(B)

⁴I prayed to the Lord my God and confessed:^(C)

“Lord, the great and awesome God,^(D) who keeps his covenant of love^(E) with those who love him and keep his commandments, ⁵we have sinned^(F) and done wrong.^(G) We have been wicked and have rebelled; we have turned away^(H) from your commands and laws.^(I) ⁶We have not listened^(J) to your servants the prophets,^(K) who spoke in your name to our kings, our princes and our ancestors,^(L) and to all the people of the land.

⁷“Lord, you are righteous,^(M) but this day we are covered with shame^(N)—the people of Judah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem and all Israel, both near and far, in all the countries where you have scattered^(O) us because of our unfaithfulness^(P) to you.^(Q) ⁸We and our kings, our princes and our ancestors are covered with shame, Lord, because we have sinned against you.^(R) ⁹The Lord our God is merciful and forgiving,^(S) even though we have rebelled against him;^(T) ¹⁰we have not obeyed the Lord our God or kept the laws he gave us through his servants the prophets.^(U)

Love for Enemies^(A)

²⁷“But to you who are listening I say: Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you,^(B) ²⁸bless those who curse you, pray for those who mistreat you.^(C) ²⁹If someone slaps you on one cheek, turn to them the other also. If someone takes your coat, do not withhold your shirt from them. ³⁰Give to everyone who asks you, and if anyone takes what belongs to you, do not demand it back.^(D) ³¹Do to others as you would have them do to you.^(E)

³²“If you love those who love you, what credit is that to you?^(F) Even sinners love those who love them. ³³And if you do good to those who are good to you, what credit is that to you? Even sinners do that. ³⁴And if you lend to those from whom you expect repayment, what credit is that to you?^(G) Even sinners lend to sinners, expecting to be repaid in full. ³⁵But love your enemies, do good to them,^(H) and lend to them without expecting to get anything back. Then your reward will be great, and you will be children^(I) of the Most High,^(J) because he is kind to the ungrateful and wicked. ³⁶Be merciful,^(K) just as your Father^(L) is merciful.

Judging Others^(M)

³⁷“Do not judge, and you will not be judged.^(N) Do not condemn, and you will not be condemned. Forgive, and you will be forgiven.^(O) ³⁸Give, and it will be given to you. A good measure, pressed down, shaken together and running over, will be poured into your lap.^(P) For with the measure you use, it will be measured to you.”^(Q)
