Psalm 78

God’s Guidance of His People in Spite of Their Unfaithfulness.
A [a]Maskil of Asaph.
78 (A)Listen, my people, to my [b]instruction;
(B)Incline your ears to the words of my mouth.
2 I will (C)open my mouth in a parable;
I will tell (D)riddles of old,
3 Which we have heard and known,
And (E)our fathers have told us.
4 We will (F)not conceal them from their children,
But we will (G)tell the generation to come the praises of the Lord,
And His power and His (H)wondrous works that He has done.
5 For He established a (I)testimony in Jacob,
And appointed a (J)law in Israel,
Which He (K)commanded our fathers
That they were to [c](L)teach them to their children,
6 (M)So that the generation to come would know, (N)the children yet to be born,
That they would arise and (O)tell them to their children,
7 So that they would put their confidence in God
And (P)not forget the works of God,
But (Q)comply with His commandments,
8 And (R)not be like their fathers,
A (S)stubborn and rebellious generation,
A generation that (T)did not [d]prepare its heart
And whose spirit was not (U)faithful to God.
9 The sons of Ephraim [e]were (V)archers equipped with bows,
Yet (W)they turned back on the day of battle.
10 They (X)did not keep the covenant of God
And refused to (Y)walk in His Law;
11 They (Z)forgot His deeds
And His [f]miracles that He had shown them.
12 (AA)He performed wonders before their fathers
In the land of Egypt, in the (AB)field of Zoan.
13 He (AC)divided the sea and caused them to pass through,
And He made the waters stand (AD)up like a heap.
14 Then He led them with the cloud by (AE)day
And all the night with a (AF)light of fire.
15 He (AG)split the rocks in the wilderness
And gave them plenty to drink like the ocean depths.
16 He (AH)brought forth streams from the rock
And made waters run down like rivers.
17 Yet they still continued to sin against Him,
To (AI)rebel against the Most High in the desert.
18 And in their heart they (AJ)put God to the test
By asking for (AK)food [g]that suited their taste.
19 Then they spoke against God;
They said, “(AL)Can God prepare a table in the wilderness?
20 Behold, He (AM)struck the rock so that waters gushed out,
And streams were overflowing;
Can He also provide bread?
Will He prepare (AN)meat for His people?”
21 Therefore the Lord heard and [h]was (AO)full of wrath;
And a fire was kindled against Jacob,
And anger also mounted against Israel,
22 Because they (AP)did not believe in God
And did not trust in His salvation.
23 Yet He commanded the clouds above
And (AQ)opened the doors of heaven;
24 He (AR)rained down manna upon them to eat,
And gave them [i](AS)food from heaven.
25 Man ate the bread of [j]angels;
He sent them [k]food [l](AT)in abundance.
26 He (AU)made the east wind blow in the sky
And by His [m]power He directed the south wind.
27 When He rained meat upon them like the dust,
Even (AV)winged fowl like the sand of the seas,
28 He let them fall in the midst of [n]their camp,
All around their dwellings.
29 So they (AW)ate and were well filled,
And He [o]satisfied their longing.
30 [p]Yet before they had abandoned their longing,
(AX)While their food was in their mouths,
31 The (AY)anger of God rose against them
And killed [q]some of their (AZ)strongest ones,
And [r]subdued the choice men of Israel.
32 In spite of all this they (BA)still sinned
And (BB)did not believe in His wonderful works.
33 So He brought (BC)their days to an end in futility,
And their years to an end in sudden terror.
34 When He killed them, then they (BD)sought Him,
And they returned and searched (BE)diligently for God;
35 And they remembered that God was their (BF)rock,
And the Most High God their (BG)Redeemer.
36 But they (BH)flattered Him with their mouth
And (BI)lied to Him with their tongue.
37 For their heart was not (BJ)steadfast toward Him,
Nor were they faithful with His covenant.
38 But He, being (BK)compassionate, [s](BL)forgave their wrongdoing and did not destroy them;
And often He [t](BM)restrained His anger
And did not stir up all His wrath.
39 So (BN)He remembered that they were only (BO)flesh,
A [u](BP)wind that passes and does not return.
40 How often they (BQ)rebelled against Him in the wilderness
And (BR)grieved Him in the (BS)desert!
41 Again and again they [v](BT)tempted God,
And pained the (BU)Holy One of Israel.
42 They (BV)did not remember (BW)His [w]power,
The day when He (BX)redeemed them from the enemy,
43 When He performed His (BY)signs in Egypt
And His (BZ)marvels in the field of Zoan,
44 And (CA)turned their rivers to blood,
And their streams, so that they could not drink.
45 He sent swarms of (CB)flies among them that devoured them,
And (CC)frogs that destroyed them.
46 He also gave their crops to the (CD)grasshopper
And the product of their labor to the (CE)locust.
47 He [x]destroyed their vines with (CF)hailstones
And their sycamore trees with frost.
48 He also turned their (CG)cattle over to the hailstones,
And their herds to bolts of lightning.
49 He (CH)sent His burning anger upon them,
Fury and indignation and trouble,
A band of [y]destroying angels.
50 He leveled a path for His anger;
He did not spare their souls from death,
But (CI)turned their lives over to the plague,
51 And (CJ)struck all the firstborn in Egypt,
The (CK)first and best of their vigor in the tents of (CL)Ham.
52 But He (CM)led His own people out like sheep,
And guided them in the wilderness (CN)like a flock;
53 He led them (CO)safely, so that they did not fear;
But (CP)the sea engulfed their enemies.
54 So (CQ)He brought them to His holy [z]land,
To this [aa](CR)hill country (CS)which His right hand had gained.
55 He also (CT)drove out the nations from them
And (CU)apportioned them as an inheritance by measurement,
And had the tribes of Israel dwell in their tents.
56 Yet they [ab](CV)tempted and (CW)rebelled against the Most High God
And did not keep His testimonies,
57 But turned back and (CX)acted treacherously like their fathers;
They (CY)turned aside like a treacherous bow.
58 For they (CZ)provoked Him with their (DA)high places
And (DB)moved Him to jealousy with their (DC)carved images.
59 When God heard them, He [ac]was filled with (DD)wrath
And He utterly (DE)rejected Israel;
60 So that He (DF)abandoned the (DG)dwelling place at Shiloh,
The tent [ad]which He had pitched among people,
61 And He gave up His (DH)strength to captivity
And His glory (DI)into the hand of the enemy.
62 He also (DJ)turned His people over to the sword,
And [ae]was filled with wrath at His inheritance.
63 (DK)Fire devoured [af]His young men,
And [ag]His (DL)virgins had no wedding songs.
64 [ah]His (DM)priests fell by the sword,
And [ai]His (DN)widows could not weep.
65 Then the Lord (DO)awoke as if from sleep,
Like a (DP)warrior [aj]overcome by wine.
66 He [ak](DQ)drove His adversaries backward;
He put on them an everlasting disgrace.
67 He also (DR)rejected the tent of Joseph,
And did not choose the tribe of Ephraim,
68 But chose the tribe of Judah,
Mount (DS)Zion, which He loved.
69 And He (DT)built His sanctuary like the heights,
Like the earth which He has established forever.
70 He also (DU)chose His servant David
And took him from the sheepfolds;
71 From [al](DV)the care of the [am]ewes (DW)with nursing lambs He brought him
To (DX)shepherd Jacob His people,
And Israel (DY)His inheritance.
72 So he shepherded them according to the (DZ)integrity of his heart,
And guided them with his skillful hands.

78 Escucha(A), pueblo mío, mi enseñanza;
Inclinen ustedes su oído a las palabras de mi boca(B).
2 En parábolas abriré mi boca(C);
Hablaré enigmas(D) de la antigüedad,
3 Que hemos oído y conocido,
Y que nuestros padres nos han contado(E).
4 No lo ocultaremos a sus hijos(F),
Sino que contaremos a la generación venidera las alabanzas del Señor(G),
Su poder y las maravillas(H) que hizo.
5 ¶Porque Él estableció un testimonio en Jacob(I),
Y puso una ley en Israel(J),
La cual ordenó a nuestros padres(K)
Que enseñaran a sus hijos(L),
6 Para que la generación venidera lo supiera, aun los hijos que habían de nacer(M),
Y estos se levantaran y lo contaran a sus hijos(N),
7 Para que ellos pusieran su confianza en Dios,
Y no se olvidaran de las obras de Dios(O)
Sino que guardaran Sus mandamientos(P);
8 Y que no fueran como sus padres(Q),
Una generación porfiada y rebelde(R),
Generación que no preparó su corazón(S),
Y cuyo espíritu no fue fiel a Dios(T).
9 ¶Los hijos de Efraín eran arqueros bien equipados(U),
Pero volvieron las espaldas el día de la batalla(V).
10 No guardaron el pacto de Dios(W)
Y rehusaron andar en Su ley(X);
11 Olvidaron Sus obras(Y)
Y los milagros que les había mostrado.
12 Él hizo maravillas(Z) en presencia de sus padres,
En la tierra de Egipto, en el campo de Zoán(AA).
13 Dividió el mar(AB) y los hizo pasar,
Y contuvo las aguas como en un montón(AC).
14 Después los guió de día con la nube(AD)
Y toda la noche con un resplandor de fuego(AE).
15 Partió las rocas en el desierto,
Y les dio agua tan abundante(AF) como las profundidades del océano;
16 Hizo salir corrientes de la peña(AG)
E hizo descender aguas como ríos.
17 ¶Pero aún siguieron pecando contra Él,
Rebelándose(AH) contra el Altísimo en el desierto.
18 Y en sus corazones tentaron[a] a Dios(AI),
Pidiendo comida(AJ) a su gusto.
19 Hablaron contra Dios,
Y dijeron: «¿Podrá Dios preparar mesa en el desierto(AK)?
20 -»Entonces Él golpeó la roca y brotaron aguas,
Y torrentes se desbordaron(AL);
¿Podrá también dar pan?
¿Proveerá carne para Su pueblo(AM)?».
21 ¶Por tanto, al oírlo, el Señor se indignó(AN);
Un fuego se encendió contra Jacob,
Y aumentó también la ira contra Israel,
22 Porque no creyeron en Dios,
Ni confiaron en Su salvación(AO).
23 Sin embargo, dio órdenes a las nubes arriba,
Y abrió las puertas de los cielos(AP);
24 Hizo llover sobre ellos maná(AQ) para comer,
Y les dio comida del cielo(AR).
25 Pan de ángeles[b] comió el hombre;
Dios les mandó comida hasta saciarlos(AS).
26 Hizo soplar en el cielo el viento del este(AT),
Y con Su poder dirigió el viento del este,
27 Él hizo llover sobre ellos carne como polvo,
Aladas aves(AU) como arena de los mares,
28 Y las hizo caer en medio del campamento,
Alrededor de sus viviendas.
29 Comieron y quedaron bien saciados(AV),
Y les concedió su deseo.
30 Antes de que hubieran satisfecho su deseo,
Mientras la comida aún estaba en su boca,
31 La ira de Dios se alzó contra ellos(AW)
Y mató a algunos de los más robustos(AX),
Y subyugó a los escogidos de Israel.
32 A pesar de todo esto, todavía pecaron(AY)
Y no creyeron en Sus maravillas(AZ).
33 Él, pues, hizo terminar sus días en vanidad(BA),
Y sus años en terror súbito.
34 ¶Cuando los hería de muerte, entonces lo buscaban(BB),
Y se volvían y buscaban con diligencia a Dios(BC);
35 Se acordaban de que Dios era su Roca(BD),
Y el Dios Altísimo su Redentor(BE).
36 Pero con su boca lo engañaban(BF)
Y con su lengua le mentían(BG).
37 Pues su corazón no era leal para con Él(BH),
Ni eran fieles a Su pacto.
38 Pero Él, siendo compasivo(BI), perdonaba sus iniquidades(BJ) y no los destruía;
Muchas veces contuvo Su ira(BK),
Y no despertó todo Su furor.
39 Se acordaba(BL) de que ellos eran carne(BM),
Un soplo que pasa y no vuelve(BN).
40 ¶¡Cuántas veces se rebelaron contra Él en el desierto(BO),
Y lo entristecieron(BP) en las soledades(BQ)!
41 Tentaron a Dios(BR) una y otra vez,
Y afligieron al Santo de Israel(BS).
42 No se acordaron(BT) de Su poder[c](BU),
Del día que los redimió del adversario(BV),
43 Cuando hizo Sus señales en Egipto(BW),
Y Sus prodigios(BX) en el campo de Zoán.
44 Convirtió en sangre sus ríos(BY)
Y sus corrientes, y no pudieron beber.
45 Envió entre ellos enjambres de moscas(BZ) que los devoraban,
Y ranas que los destruían(CA).
46 Entregó también sus cosechas al saltamontes(CB),
Y el fruto de su trabajo a la langosta(CC).
47 Destruyó sus viñas con granizo(CD),
Y sus sicómoros con escarcha.
48 Entregó también al granizo sus ganados(CE),
Y sus rebaños a los rayos.
49 Envió sobre ellos el ardor de Su ira(CF),
Furia, indignación y angustia,
Un ejército de ángeles destructores.
50 Preparó senda para Su ira;
No libró sus almas de la muerte,
Sino que entregó sus vidas a la plaga(CG),
51 E hirió a todos los primogénitos en Egipto(CH),
Las primicias(CI) de su virilidad en las tiendas de Cam(CJ).
52 Pero a Su pueblo lo sacó como a ovejas(CK),
Como a rebaño los condujo en el desierto(CL);
53 Los guió con seguridad(CM), de modo que no temieron,
Pero el mar se tragó a sus enemigos(CN).
54 ¶Los trajo, pues, a Su tierra santa(CO),
A esta tierra montañosa(CP) que Su diestra había adquirido(CQ).
55 Y expulsó a las naciones(CR) de delante de ellos;
Las repartió con medida por herencia(CS),
E hizo habitar en sus tiendas a las tribus de Israel.
56 Sin embargo, ellos pusieron a prueba(CT) y provocaron al Dios Altísimo(CU),
Y no guardaron Sus testimonios,
57 Sino que se volvieron atrás y fueron desleales como sus padres(CV);
Se desviaron como arco engañoso(CW).
58 Lo provocaron(CX) con sus lugares altos(CY),
Y despertaron Sus celos(CZ) con sus imágenes talladas(DA).
59 Al oírlo Dios, se indignó(DB),
Y aborreció a Israel en gran manera(DC).
60 Abandonó la morada en Silo(DD),
La tienda que había levantado entre los hombres,
61 Y entregó al cautiverio Su poderío(DE),
Y Su gloria en manos del adversario(DF).
62 Entregó también Su pueblo a la espada(DG),
Y se indignó contra Su heredad.
63 El fuego consumió(DH) a sus jóvenes,
Y no tuvieron canciones de bodas sus vírgenes(DI).
64 Sus sacerdotes cayeron a espada(DJ),
Y sus viudas no pudieron llorar(DK).
65 ¶Entonces despertó el Señor como de un sueño(DL),
Como guerrero(DM) vencido por el vino,
66 E hizo retroceder a Sus adversarios(DN),
Poniendo sobre ellos una afrenta perpetua.
67 Desechó también la tienda de José(DO),
Y no escogió a la tribu de Efraín,
68 Sino que escogió a la tribu de Judá,
Al monte Sión que Él amaba(DP).
69 Y edificó Su santuario como las alturas(DQ),
Como la tierra que ha fundado para siempre.
70 Escogió también a David Su siervo(DR),
Lo tomó de entre los rediles de las ovejas;
71 Lo trajo de cuidar las ovejas(DS) con sus corderitos(DT),
Para pastorear(DU) a Jacob, Su pueblo,
Y a Israel, Su heredad(DV).
72 Y él los pastoreó según la integridad de su corazón(DW),
Y los guió con la destreza de sus manos.
