In the Day of Trouble I Seek the Lord

To the choirmaster: according to ^(A)Jeduthun. A Psalm of ^(B)Asaph.

77 I ^(C)cry aloud to God,
    aloud to God, and he will hear me.
²^(D)In the day of my trouble I seek the Lord;
    in ^(E)the night my ^(F)hand is stretched out without wearying;
    my soul ^(G)refuses to be comforted.
³When I remember God, I ^(H)moan;
    when I meditate, my spirit faints. Selah

⁴You hold my eyelids open;
    I am so ^(I)troubled that I cannot speak.
⁵I consider ^(J)the days of old,
    the years long ago.
⁶I said,^[a] “Let me remember my ^(K)song in the night;
    let me ^(L)meditate in my heart.”
    Then my spirit made a diligent search:
⁷“Will the Lord ^(M)spurn forever,
    and never again ^(N)be favorable?
⁸Has his steadfast love forever ceased?
    Are his ^(O)promises at an end for all time?
⁹^(P)Has God forgotten to be gracious?
    ^(Q)Has he in anger shut up his compassion?” Selah

¹⁰Then I said, “I will appeal to this,
to the years of the ^(R)right hand of the Most High.”^[b]

¹¹I will remember the deeds of the Lord;
    yes, I will ^(S)remember your wonders of old.
¹²I will ponder all your ^(T)work,
    and meditate on your ^(U)mighty deeds.
¹³Your way, O God, is ^(V)holy.
    ^(W)What god is great like our God?
¹⁴You are the God who ^(X)works wonders;
    you have ^(Y)made known your might among the peoples.
¹⁵You ^(Z)with your arm redeemed your people,
    the children of Jacob and Joseph. Selah

¹⁶When ^(AA)the waters saw you, O God,
    when the waters saw you, they were afraid;
    indeed, the deep trembled.
¹⁷The clouds poured out water;
    the skies ^(AB)gave forth thunder;
    your ^(AC)arrows flashed on every side.
¹⁸^(AD)The crash of your thunder was in the whirlwind;
    ^(AE)your lightnings lighted up the world;
    the earth ^(AF)trembled and shook.
¹⁹Your ^(AG)way was through the sea,
    your path through the great waters;
    yet your footprints ^(AH)were unseen.^[c]
²⁰You ^(AI)led your people like a flock
    by the hand of Moses and Aaron.

Moses' Final Blessing on Israel

33 This is the blessing with which Moses ^(A)the man of God blessed the people of Israel before his death. ²He said,

^(B)“The Lord came from Sinai
    and dawned from Seir upon us;^[a]
    he shone forth from Mount Paran;
he came ^(C)from the ten thousands of holy ones,
    with flaming fire^[b] at his right hand.
³Yes, ^(D)he loved his people,^[c]
    ^(E)all his holy ones were in his^[d] hand;
^(F)so they followed^[e] in your steps,
    receiving direction from you,
⁴when ^(G)Moses commanded us a law,
    as a possession for the assembly of Jacob.
⁵Thus the Lord^[f] ^(H)became king in ^(I)Jeshurun,
    when the heads of the people were gathered,
    all the tribes of Israel together.

⁶^(J)“Let Reuben live, and not die,
but let his men be few.”

⁷And this he said of Judah:

“Hear, O Lord, the voice of Judah,
and bring him in to his people.
With your hands contend^[g] for him,
and be a help against his adversaries.”

⁸And ^(K)of Levi he said,

“Give to Levi^[h] ^(L)your Thummim,
    and your Urim to your godly one,
^(M)whom you tested at Massah,
    with whom you quarreled at the waters of Meribah;
⁹who said of his father and mother,
    ‘I regard them not’;
^(N)he disowned his brothers
    and ignored his children.
For ^(O)they observed your word
    and kept your covenant.
¹⁰^(P)They shall teach Jacob your rules
    and Israel your law;
^(Q)they shall put incense before you
    and ^(R)whole burnt offerings on your altar.
¹¹Bless, O Lord, his substance,
    and ^(S)accept the work of his hands;
crush the loins of his adversaries,
    of those who hate him, that they rise not again.”

¹²^(T)Of Benjamin he said,

“The beloved of the Lord dwells in safety.
The High God^[i] surrounds him all day long,
and dwells between his shoulders.”

¹³And ^(U)of Joseph he said,

^(V)“Blessed by the Lord be his land,
    with the choicest gifts of heaven ^(W)above,^[j]
    and of the deep that crouches beneath,
¹⁴with the choicest fruits of the sun
    and the rich yield of the months,
¹⁵with the finest produce of the ancient mountains
    and the abundance of ^(X)the everlasting hills,
¹⁶with the best gifts of the earth and ^(Y)its fullness
    and the favor of ^(Z)him who dwells in the bush.
May these rest on the head of Joseph,
    on the pate of him who is prince among his brothers.
¹⁷^(AA)A firstborn bull^[k]—he has majesty,
    and his horns are the horns of a ^(AB)wild ox;
with them ^(AC)he shall gore the peoples,
    all of them, to the ends of the earth;
^(AD)they are the ten thousands of Ephraim,
    and they are the thousands of Manasseh.”

¹⁸And of Zebulun he said,

^(AE)“Rejoice, Zebulun, in your going out,
    and Issachar, in your tents.
¹⁹They shall call peoples ^(AF)to their mountain;
    there they offer ^(AG)right sacrifices;
for they draw from the abundance of the seas
    and the hidden treasures of the sand.”

²⁰And ^(AH)of Gad he said,

“Blessed be he who enlarges Gad!
    Gad crouches ^(AI)like a lion;
    he tears off arm and scalp.
²¹^(AJ)He chose the best of the land for himself,
    for there a commander's portion was reserved;
and ^(AK)he came with the heads of the people,
    with Israel he executed the justice of the Lord,
    and his judgments for Israel.”

²²And ^(AL)of Dan he said,

^(AM)“Dan is a lion's cub
^(AN)that leaps from Bashan.”

²³And ^(AO)of Naphtali he said,

“O Naphtali, sated with favor,
and full of the blessing of the Lord,
^(AP)possess the lake^[l] and the south.”

²⁴And ^(AQ)of Asher he said,

“Most blessed of sons be Asher;
    let him be the favorite of his brothers,
    and let him ^(AR)dip his foot in oil.
²⁵Your bars shall be iron and bronze,
    and as your days, so shall your strength be.

²⁶^(AS)“There is none like God, O ^(AT)Jeshurun,
    ^(AU)who rides through the heavens to your help,
    through the skies in his majesty.
²⁷The eternal God is your ^(AV)dwelling place,^[m]
    and underneath are the everlasting arms.^[n]
And he thrust out the enemy before you
    and said, ‘Destroy.’
²⁸So Israel lived in safety,
    ^(AW)Jacob lived ^(AX)alone,^[o]
in a land of grain and wine,
    whose heavens drop down dew.
²⁹Happy are you, O Israel! ^(AY)Who is like you,
    a people ^(AZ)saved by the Lord,
^(BA)the shield of your help,
    and the sword of your triumph!
Your enemies shall come fawning to you,
    and you shall tread upon their backs.”

John the Baptist Prepares the Way

1 The beginning of the gospel of Jesus Christ, ^(A)the Son of God.^[a]

²^(B)As it is written in Isaiah the prophet,^[b]

^(C)“Behold, I send my messenger before your face,
    who will prepare your way,
³^(D)the voice of one crying in the wilderness:
    ^(E)‘Prepare^[c] the way of the Lord,
    make his paths straight,’”

⁴^(F)John appeared, baptizing in ^(G)the wilderness and proclaiming ^(H)a baptism of ^(I)repentance ^(J)for the forgiveness of sins. ⁵And all the country of Judea and all Jerusalem were going out to him and were being baptized by him in the river Jordan, ^(K)confessing their sins. ⁶Now John was ^(L)clothed with camel's hair and ^(M)wore a leather belt around his waist and ate ^(N)locusts and ^(O)wild honey. ⁷And he preached, saying, ^(P)“After me comes he who is mightier than I, the strap of whose sandals I am not worthy to stoop down and untie. ⁸^(Q)I have baptized you with water, but ^(R)he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit.”

The Baptism of Jesus

⁹^(S)In those days Jesus ^(T)came from Nazareth of Galilee and was baptized by John in the Jordan. ¹⁰And when he came up out of the water, immediately he ^(U)saw ^(V)the heavens being torn open ^(W)and the Spirit descending on him like a dove. ¹¹And ^(X)a voice came from heaven, ^(Y)“You are my beloved Son;^[d] with you I am well pleased.”

The Temptation of Jesus

¹²^(Z)The Spirit immediately drove him out into the wilderness. ¹³^(AA)And he was in the wilderness forty days, being ^(AB)tempted by ^(AC)Satan. And he was with the wild animals, and ^(AD)the angels were ministering to him.

Jesus Begins His Ministry

¹⁴^(AE)Now after John was arrested, Jesus ^(AF)came into Galilee, proclaiming the gospel of God, ¹⁵and saying, ^(AG)“The time is fulfilled, and ^(AH)the kingdom of God is at hand;^[e] ^(AI)repent and believe in the gospel.”

Jesus Calls the First Disciples

¹⁶^(AJ)Passing alongside the Sea of Galilee, he saw Simon and Andrew the brother of Simon casting a net into the sea, for they were fishermen. ¹⁷And Jesus said to them, “Follow me, and I will make you become ^(AK)fishers of men.”^[f] ¹⁸And immediately they left their nets and followed him. ¹⁹And going on a little farther, he saw James the son of Zebedee and John his brother, who were in their boat mending the nets. ²⁰And immediately he called them, and they left their father Zebedee in the boat with the hired servants and followed him.
