²³ Jesus replied to them, “The hour has come for the Son of Man^(A) to be glorified. ²⁴ Truly I tell you, unless a grain of wheat^(B) falls to the ground and dies, it remains by itself. But if it dies, it produces much fruit.^{(C) 25} The one who loves his life will lose it,^(D) and the one who hates^(E) his life^(F) in this world will keep it for eternal life. ²⁶ If anyone serves me, he must follow me. Where I am, there my servant^(G) also will be.^(H) If anyone serves me, the Father will honor^(I) him.

²⁷ “Now my soul is troubled. What should I say—Father, save me^(J) from this hour? But that is why I came to this hour. ²⁸ Father, glorify your name.”^[a](K)

Then a voice^(L) came from heaven: ^(M) “I have glorified it, and I will glorify it again.”^(N)

²⁹ The crowd standing there heard it and said it was thunder. Others said, “An angel has spoken to him.”

³⁰ Jesus responded, “This voice came, not for me, but for you.^{(O) 31} Now is the judgment of this world.^(P) Now the ruler of this world^(Q) will be cast out.^{(R) 32} As for me, if I am lifted up^[b] from the earth I will draw all people to myself.”^(S)

⁸ Be careful that no one takes you captive through philosophy and empty deceit based on human tradition,^(A) based on the elements of the world, rather than Christ.^{(B) 9} For the entire fullness^(C) of God’s nature dwells bodily^[a] in Christ, ¹⁰ and you have been filled by him, who is the head^(D) over every ruler and authority. ¹¹ You were also circumcised in him with a circumcision not done with hands, by putting off the body of flesh,^(E) in the circumcision of Christ,^{(F) 12} when you were buried with him^(G) in baptism, in which you were also raised with him^(H) through faith in the working of God, who raised him from the dead.^{(I) 13} And when you were dead in trespasses and in the uncircumcision of your flesh, he made you alive with him and forgave us all our trespasses. ¹⁴ He erased the certificate of debt, with its obligations, that was against us and opposed to us, and has taken it away by nailing it to the cross.^{(J) 15} He disarmed the rulers and authorities and disgraced them publicly; he triumphed over them in him.^[b](K)

⁹ But we do see Jesus—made lower than the angels for a short time so that by God’s grace he might taste death^(A) for everyone—crowned with glory and honor^(B) because he suffered death.^(C)

¹⁰ For in bringing many sons and daughters to glory, it was entirely appropriate that God—for whom and through whom all things exist—should make the pioneer^[a] of their salvation perfect through sufferings.^{(D) 11} For the one who sanctifies and those who are sanctified all have one Father.^[b] That is why Jesus is not ashamed to call them brothers and sisters,^{(E) 12} saying:

¹³ Again, I will trust in him.^[d] And again, Here I am with the children God gave me.^[e](G)

¹⁴ Now since the children have flesh and blood in common, Jesus also shared in these, so that through his death he might destroy the one holding the power of death—that is, the devil^(H)— ¹⁵ and free those who were held in slavery all their lives by the fear of death.^{(I) 16} For it is clear that he does not reach out to help angels, but to help Abraham’s offspring.^{(J) 17} Therefore, he had to be like his brothers and sisters in every way, so that he could become a merciful and faithful high priest in matters^[f] pertaining to God, to make atonement^[g](K) for the sins of the people.^{(L) 18} For since he himself has suffered when he was tempted, he is able to help those who are tempted.

²⁹ Peter and the apostles replied, “We must obey God rather than people. ³⁰ The God of our ancestors raised up Jesus,^(A) whom you had murdered by hanging him on a tree.^{(B) 31} God exalted this man to his right hand as ruler and Savior, to give repentance to Israel and forgiveness of sins.^{(C) 32} We are witnesses of these things, and so is the Holy Spirit^(D) whom God has given to those who obey him.”

¹⁷ I will rescue you from your people and from the Gentiles. I am sending you to them^{(A) 18} to open their eyes^(B) so that they may turn^[a] from darkness to light and from the power of Satan to God, that they may receive forgiveness of sins and a share among those who are sanctified by faith in me.’^(C)
