Psalm 72

New International Version

Psalm 72

Of Solomon.

¹Endow the king with your justice,^(A) O God,
the royal son with your righteousness.
²May he judge your people in righteousness,^(B)
your afflicted ones with justice.

³May the mountains bring prosperity to the people,
    the hills the fruit of righteousness.
⁴May he defend the afflicted^(C) among the people
    and save the children of the needy;^(D)
    may he crush the oppressor.^(E)
⁵May he endure^[a]^(F) as long as the sun,
    as long as the moon, through all generations.^(G)
⁶May he be like rain^(H) falling on a mown field,
    like showers watering the earth.
⁷In his days may the righteous flourish^(I)
    and prosperity abound till the moon is no more.

⁸May he rule from sea to sea
    and from the River^[b]^(J) to the ends of the earth.^(K)
⁹May the desert tribes bow before him
    and his enemies lick the dust.
¹⁰May the kings of Tarshish^(L) and of distant shores^(M)
    bring tribute to him.
May the kings of Sheba^(N) and Seba
    present him gifts.^(O)
¹¹May all kings bow down^(P) to him
    and all nations serve^(Q) him.

¹²For he will deliver the needy who cry out,
    the afflicted who have no one to help.
¹³He will take pity^(R) on the weak and the needy
    and save the needy from death.
¹⁴He will rescue^(S) them from oppression and violence,
    for precious^(T) is their blood in his sight.

¹⁵Long may he live!
    May gold from Sheba^(U) be given him.
May people ever pray for him
    and bless him all day long.^(V)
¹⁶May grain^(W) abound throughout the land;
    on the tops of the hills may it sway.
May the crops^(X) flourish like Lebanon^(Y)
    and thrive^[c] like the grass of the field.^(Z)
¹⁷May his name endure forever;^(AA)
    may it continue as long as the sun.^(AB)

Then all nations will be blessed through him,^[d]
and they will call him blessed.^(AC)

¹⁸Praise be to the Lord God, the God of Israel,^(AD)
who alone does marvelous deeds.^(AE)
¹⁹Praise be to his glorious name^(AF) forever;
may the whole earth be filled with his glory.^(AG)
Amen and Amen.^(AH)

¹⁸“And I, because of what they have planned and done,^(A) am about to come^[a] and gather the people of all nations^(B) and languages, and they will come and see my glory.^(C)

¹⁹“I will set a sign^(D) among them, and I will send some of those who survive^(E) to the nations—to Tarshish,^(F) to the Libyans^[b] and Lydians^(G) (famous as archers), to Tubal^(H) and Greece,^(I) and to the distant islands^(J) that have not heard of my fame or seen my glory.^(K) They will proclaim my glory among the nations. ²⁰And they will bring^(L) all your people, from all the nations, to my holy mountain^(M) in Jerusalem as an offering to the Lord—on horses, in chariots and wagons, and on mules and camels,”^(N) says the Lord. “They will bring them, as the Israelites bring their grain offerings, to the temple of the Lord in ceremonially clean vessels.^(O) ²¹And I will select some of them also to be priests^(P) and Levites,” says the Lord.

²²“As the new heavens and the new earth^(Q) that I make will endure before me,” declares the Lord, “so will your name and descendants endure.^(R) ²³From one New Moon to another and from one Sabbath^(S) to another, all mankind will come and bow down^(T) before me,” says the Lord. ²⁴“And they will go out and look on the dead bodies^(U) of those who rebelled^(V) against me; the worms^(W) that eat them will not die, the fire that burns them will not be quenched,^(X) and they will be loathsome to all mankind.”

The Mountain of Fear and the Mountain of Joy

¹⁸You have not come to a mountain that can be touched and that is burning with fire; to darkness, gloom and storm;^(A) ¹⁹to a trumpet blast^(B) or to such a voice speaking words^(C) that those who heard it begged that no further word be spoken to them,^(D) ²⁰because they could not bear what was commanded: “If even an animal touches the mountain, it must be stoned to death.”^[a]^(E) ²¹The sight was so terrifying that Moses said, “I am trembling with fear.”^[b]^(F)

²²But you have come to Mount Zion,^(G) to the city^(H) of the living God,^(I) the heavenly Jerusalem.^(J) You have come to thousands upon thousands of angels in joyful assembly, ²³to the church of the firstborn,^(K) whose names are written in heaven.^(L) You have come to God, the Judge of all,^(M) to the spirits of the righteous made perfect,^(N) ²⁴to Jesus the mediator^(O) of a new covenant, and to the sprinkled blood^(P) that speaks a better word than the blood of Abel.^(Q)
