Psalm 70

A Call for Deliverance

For the choir director. Of David. To bring remembrance.^(A)

¹God, hurry to rescue me.
Lord, hurry to help me!^(B)

²Let those who seek to kill me
be disgraced and confounded;
let those who wish me harm
be turned back and humiliated.
³Let those who say, “Aha, aha!”
retreat because of their shame.^(C)

⁴Let all who seek you rejoice and be glad in you;
let those who love your salvation
continually say, “God is great!” ^(D)
⁵I am oppressed and needy;
hurry to me, God.
You are my help and my deliverer;
Lord, do not delay.^(E)

Proverbs 17:1-5

17 Better a dry crust with peace
than a house full of feasting with strife.^(A)

²A prudent servant will rule over a disgraceful son
and share an inheritance among brothers.

³A crucible for silver, and a smelter for gold,^(B)
and the Lord is the tester of hearts.^(C)

⁴A wicked person listens to malicious talk;^[a]
a liar pays attention to a destructive tongue.

⁵The one who mocks the poor insults his Maker,^(D)
and one who rejoices over calamity
will not go unpunished.^(E)

Fulfill Your Ministry

4 I solemnly charge you before God and Christ Jesus, who is going to judge^(A) the living and the dead,^(B) and because of his appearing and his kingdom:^(C) ²Preach the word; be ready in season and out of season; correct, rebuke, and encourage with great patience and teaching. ³For the time will come when people will not tolerate sound doctrine,^(D) but according to their own desires, will multiply teachers for themselves because they have an itch to hear what they want to hear. ⁴They will turn away from hearing the truth and will turn aside to myths.^(E) ⁵But as for you, exercise self-control in everything, endure hardship, do the work of an evangelist,^(F) fulfill your ministry.

⁶For I am already being poured out as a drink offering,^(G) and the time for my departure is close. ⁷I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. ⁸There is reserved for me the crown^(H) of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge,^(I) will give me on that day, and not only to me, but to all those who have loved his appearing.^[a]^(J)
