Psalm 69-72
New American Standard Bible 1995
A Cry of Distress and Imprecation on Adversaries.
For the choir director; according to [a]Shoshannim. A Psalm of David.
69 Save me, O God,
For the (A)waters have [b]threatened my life.
2 I have sunk in deep (B)mire, and there is no foothold;
I have come into deep waters, and a [c](C)flood overflows me.
3 I am (D)weary with my crying; my throat is parched;
My (E)eyes fail while I wait for my God.
4 Those (F)who hate me without a cause are more than the hairs of my head;
Those who would [d]destroy me (G)are powerful, being wrongfully my enemies;
(H)What I did not steal, I then have to restore.
5 O God, it is You who knows (I)my folly,
And (J)my wrongs are not hidden from You.
6 May those who wait for You not (K)be ashamed through me, O Lord [e]God of hosts;
May those who seek You not be dishonored through me, O God of Israel,
7 Because (L)for Your sake I have borne reproach;
(M)Dishonor has covered my face.
8 I have become (N)estranged [f]from my brothers
And an alien to my mother’s sons.
9 For (O)zeal for Your house has consumed me,
And (P)the reproaches of those who reproach You have fallen on me.
10 When I wept (Q)in my soul with fasting,
It became my reproach.
11 When I made (R)sackcloth my clothing,
I became (S)a byword to them.
12 Those who (T)sit in the gate talk about me,
And I am the [g](U)song of the drunkards.
13 But as for me, my prayer is to You, O Lord, (V)at an acceptable time;
O God, in the (W)greatness of Your lovingkindness,
Answer me with [h]Your saving truth.
14 Deliver me from the (X)mire and do not let me sink;
May I be (Y)delivered from [i]my foes and from the [j](Z)deep waters.
15 May the [k](AA)flood of water not overflow me
Nor the deep swallow me up,
Nor the (AB)pit shut its mouth on me.
16 Answer me, O Lord, for (AC)Your lovingkindness is good;
(AD)According to the greatness of Your compassion, (AE)turn to me,
17 And (AF)do not hide Your face from Your servant,
For I am (AG)in distress; answer me quickly.
18 Oh draw near to my soul and (AH)redeem it;
(AI)Ransom me because of my enemies!
19 You know my (AJ)reproach and my shame and my dishonor;
All my adversaries are [l]before You.
20 Reproach has (AK)broken my heart and I am so sick.
And (AL)I looked for sympathy, but there was none,
And for (AM)comforters, but I found none.
21 They also gave me [m](AN)gall [n]for my food
And for my thirst they (AO)gave me vinegar to drink.
22 May (AP)their table before them become a snare;
And [o](AQ)when they are in peace, may it become a trap.
23 May their (AR)eyes grow dim so that they cannot see,
And make their (AS)loins shake continually.
24 (AT)Pour out Your indignation on them,
And may Your burning anger overtake them.
25 May their [p](AU)camp be desolate;
May none dwell in their tents.
26 For they have (AV)persecuted him whom (AW)You Yourself have smitten,
And they tell of the pain of those whom (AX)You have [q]wounded.
27 Add (AY)iniquity to their iniquity,
And (AZ)may they not come into (BA)Your righteousness.
28 May they be (BB)blotted out of the (BC)book of life
And may they not be [r](BD)recorded with the righteous.
29 But I am (BE)afflicted and in pain;
[s]May Your salvation, O God, (BF)set me securely on high.
30 I will (BG)praise the name of God with song
And (BH)magnify Him with (BI)thanksgiving.
31 And it will (BJ)please the Lord better than an ox
Or a young bull with horns and hoofs.
32 The (BK)humble [t]have seen it and are glad;
You who seek God, (BL)let your heart [u]revive.
33 For (BM)the Lord hears the needy
And (BN)does not despise His who are prisoners.
34 Let (BO)heaven and earth praise Him,
The seas and (BP)everything that moves in them.
35 For God will (BQ)save Zion and (BR)build the cities of Judah,
That they may dwell there and (BS)possess it.
36 The [v](BT)descendants of His servants will inherit it,
And those who love His name (BU)will dwell in it.
Prayer for Help against Persecutors.
For the choir director. A Psalm of David; for a memorial.
70 (BV)O God, hasten to deliver me;
O Lord, hasten to my help!
2 (BW)Let those be ashamed and humiliated
Who seek my [w]life;
Let those be turned back and dishonored
Who delight [x]in my hurt.
3 (BX)Let those be [y]turned back because of their shame
Who say, “Aha, aha!”
4 Let all who seek You rejoice and be glad in You;
And let those who love Your salvation say continually,
“Let God be magnified.”
5 But (BY)I am afflicted and needy;
(BZ)Hasten to me, O God!
You are my help and my deliverer;
O Lord, do not delay.
Prayer of an Old Man for Deliverance.
71 (CA)In You, O Lord, I have taken refuge;
Let me never be ashamed.
2 (CB)In Your righteousness deliver me and rescue me;
(CC)Incline Your ear to me and save me.
3 (CD)Be to me a rock of (CE)habitation to which I may continually come;
You have given (CF)commandment to save me,
For You are (CG)my [z]rock and my fortress.
4 (CH)Rescue me, O my God, out of the hand of the wicked,
Out of the [aa]grasp of the wrongdoer and ruthless man,
5 For You are my (CI)hope;
O Lord [ab]God, You are my (CJ)confidence from my youth.
6 [ac]By You I have been (CK)sustained from my birth;
You are He who (CL)took me from my mother’s womb;
My (CM)praise is continually [ad]of You.
7 I have become a (CN)marvel to many,
For You are (CO)my strong refuge.
8 My (CP)mouth is filled with Your praise
And with (CQ)Your glory all day long.
9 Do not cast me off in the (CR)time of old age;
Do not forsake me when my strength fails.
10 For my enemies have spoken [ae]against me;
And those who (CS)watch for my [af]life (CT)have consulted together,
11 Saying, “(CU)God has forsaken him;
Pursue and seize him, for there is (CV)no one to deliver.”
12 O God, (CW)do not be far from me;
O my God, (CX)hasten to my help!
13 Let those who are adversaries of my soul be (CY)ashamed and consumed;
Let them be (CZ)covered with reproach and dishonor, who (DA)seek [ag]to injure me.
14 But as for me, I will (DB)hope continually,
And will [ah](DC)praise You yet more and more.
15 My (DD)mouth shall tell of Your righteousness
And of (DE)Your salvation all day long;
For I (DF)do not know the [ai]sum of them.
16 I will come (DG)with the mighty deeds of the Lord [aj]God;
I will (DH)make mention of Your righteousness, Yours alone.
17 O God, You (DI)have taught me from my youth,
And I still (DJ)declare Your wondrous deeds.
18 And even when I am (DK)old and gray, O God, do not forsake me,
Until I (DL)declare Your [ak]strength to this generation,
Your power to all who are to come.
19 [al]For Your (DM)righteousness, O God, reaches to the [am]heavens,
You who have (DN)done great things;
O God, (DO)who is like You?
20 You who have (DP)shown [an]me many troubles and distresses
Will (DQ)revive [ao]me again,
And will bring [ap]me up again (DR)from the depths of the earth.
21 May You increase my (DS)greatness
And turn to (DT)comfort me.
22 I will also praise You with [aq](DU)a harp,
Even Your [ar]truth, O my God;
To You I will sing praises with the (DV)lyre,
O (DW)Holy One of Israel.
23 My lips will (DX)shout for joy when I sing praises to You;
And my (DY)soul, which You have redeemed.
24 My (DZ)tongue also will utter Your righteousness all day long;
For they are (EA)ashamed, for they are humiliated who seek [as]my hurt.
The Reign of the Righteous King.
A Psalm of Solomon.
72 Give the king (EB)Your judgments, O God,
And (EC)Your righteousness to the king’s son.
2 [at]May [au]he (ED)judge Your people with righteousness
And [av](EE)Your afflicted with justice.
3 [aw]Let the mountains bring [ax](EF)peace to the people,
And the hills, in righteousness.
4 [ay]May he (EG)vindicate the [az]afflicted of the people,
Save the children of the needy
And crush the oppressor.
5 [ba]Let them fear You (EH)while the sun endures,
And [bb]as long as the moon, throughout all generations.
6 [bc]May he come down (EI)like rain upon the mown grass,
Like (EJ)showers that water the earth.
7 In his days [bd]may the (EK)righteous flourish,
And (EL)abundance of peace till the moon is no more.
8 May he also rule (EM)from sea to sea
And from the River to the ends of the earth.
9 [be]Let (EN)the nomads of the desert (EO)bow before him,
And his enemies (EP)lick the dust.
10 [bf]Let the kings of (EQ)Tarshish and of the [bg](ER)islands bring presents;
The kings of (ES)Sheba and (ET)Seba (EU)offer [bh]gifts.
11 [bi]And let all (EV)kings bow down before him,
All (EW)nations serve him.
12 For he will (EX)deliver the needy when he cries for help,
The [bj]afflicted also, and him who has no helper.
13 He will have (EY)compassion on the poor and needy,
And the [bk]lives of the needy he will save.
14 He will [bl](EZ)rescue their [bm]life from oppression and violence,
And their blood will be (FA)precious in his sight;
15 So may he live, and may the (FB)gold of Sheba be given to him;
And let [bn]them pray for him continually;
Let [bo]them bless him all day long.
16 May there be abundance of grain in the earth on top of the mountains;
Its fruit will wave like the cedars of (FC)Lebanon;
And may those from the city flourish like (FD)vegetation of the earth.
17 May his (FE)name endure forever;
May his name [bp]increase [bq](FF)as long as the sun shines;
And let men (FG)bless themselves by him;
(FH)Let all nations call him blessed.
18 (FI)Blessed be the Lord God, the God of Israel,
Who alone (FJ)works wonders.
19 And blessed be His (FK)glorious name forever;
And may the whole (FL)earth be filled with His glory.
(FM)Amen, and Amen.
20 The prayers of David the son of Jesse are ended.
