Psalm 69
A Plea for Rescue
For the choir director: according to “The Lilies.”(A) Of David.
1 Save me, God,
for the water has risen to my neck.(B)
2 I have sunk in deep mud, and there is no footing;
I have come into deep water,
and a flood sweeps over me.(C)
3 I am weary from my crying;
my throat is parched.
My eyes fail, looking for my God.(D)
4 Those who hate me without cause
are more numerous than the hairs of my head;
my deceitful enemies, who would destroy me,
are powerful.(E)
Though I did not steal, I must repay.(F)
5 God, you know my foolishness,
and my guilty acts are not hidden from you.(G)
6 Do not let those who put their hope in you
be disgraced because of me,
Lord God of Armies;
do not let those who seek you
be humiliated because of me,
God of Israel.(H)
7 For I have endured insults because of you,
and shame has covered my face.(I)
8 I have become a stranger to my brothers
and a foreigner to my mother’s sons(J)
9 because zeal for your house has consumed me,(K)
and the insults of those who insult you
have fallen on me.(L)
10 I mourned and fasted,
but it brought me insults.(M)
11 I wore sackcloth as my clothing,
and I was a joke to them.
12 Those who sit at the city gate talk about me,
and drunkards make up songs about me.(N)
13 But as for me, Lord,
my prayer to you is for a time of favor.
In your abundant, faithful love, God,
answer me with your sure salvation.(O)
14 Rescue me from the miry mud; don’t let me sink.
Let me be rescued from those who hate me
and from the deep water.(P)
15 Don’t let the floodwaters sweep over me
or the deep swallow me up;
don’t let the Pit close its mouth over me.(Q)
16 Answer me, Lord,
for your faithful love is good.
In keeping with your abundant compassion,
turn to me.(R)
17 Don’t hide your face from your servant,
for I am in distress.
Answer me quickly!(S)
18 Come near to me and redeem me;
ransom me because of my enemies.(T)
19 You know the insults I endure—
my shame and disgrace.
You are aware of all my adversaries.(U)
20 Insults have broken my heart,
and I am in despair.
I waited for sympathy,
but there was none;
for comforters, but found no one.(V)
21 Instead, they gave me gall for my food,
and for my thirst
they gave me vinegar to drink.(W)
22 Let their table set before them be a snare,
and let it be a trap for their allies.(X)
23 Let their eyes grow too dim to see,
and let their hips continually quake.(Y)
24 Pour out your rage on them,
and let your burning anger overtake them.(Z)
25 Make their fortification desolate;
may no one live in their tents.(AA)
26 For they persecute the one you struck
and talk about the pain of those you wounded.(AB)
27 Charge them with crime on top of crime;
do not let them share in your righteousness.(AC)
28 Let them be erased from the book of life
and not be recorded with the righteous.(AD)
29 But as for me—poor and in pain—
let your salvation protect me, God.(AE)
30 I will praise God’s name with song
and exalt him with thanksgiving.(AF)
31 That will please the Lord more than an ox,
more than a bull with horns and hooves.(AG)
32 The humble will see it and rejoice.
You who seek God, take heart!(AH)
33 For the Lord listens to the needy
and does not despise
his own who are prisoners.(AI)
34 Let heaven and earth praise him,
the seas and everything that moves in them,(AJ)
35 for God will save Zion
and build up[a] the cities of Judah.
They will live there and possess it.(AK)
36 The descendants of his servants will inherit it,
and those who love his name will live in it.(AL)

The Plot to Kill Jesus
45 Therefore, many of the Jews who came to Mary and saw what he did believed in him.(A) 46 But some of them went to the Pharisees(B) and told them what Jesus had done.
47 So the chief priests and the Pharisees convened the Sanhedrin(C) and were saying, “What are we going to do since this man is doing many signs? 48 If we let him go on like this, everyone will believe in him, and the Romans(D) will come and take away both our place and our nation.”
49 One of them, Caiaphas,(E) who was high priest(F) that year, said to them, “You know nothing at all! 50 You’re not considering that it is to your[a] advantage that one man should die for the people rather than the whole nation perish.”(G) 51 He did not say this on his own, but being high priest that year he prophesied that Jesus was going to die(H) for the nation, 52 and not for the nation only, but also to unite the scattered children(I) of God. 53 So from that day on they plotted to kill him.(J)
54 Jesus therefore no longer walked openly(K) among the Jews but departed from there to the countryside near the wilderness,(L) to a town called Ephraim, and he stayed there with the disciples.
55 Now the Jewish Passover(M) was near, and many went up to Jerusalem(N) from the country to purify themselves before the Passover. 56 They were looking for Jesus and asking one another as they stood in the temple,(O) “What do you think? He won’t come to the festival,(P) will he?” 57 The chief priests(Q) and the Pharisees had given orders that if anyone knew where he was, he should report it so that they could arrest him.
The Anointing at Bethany
12 Six days before the Passover, Jesus came to Bethany(R) where Lazarus[b] was, the one Jesus had raised from the dead.(S) 2 So(T) they gave a dinner for him there; Martha(U) was serving them, and Lazarus was one of those reclining at the table with him. 3 Then Mary took a pound of perfume, pure and expensive nard, anointed Jesus’s feet, and wiped his feet with her hair.(V) So the house was filled with the fragrance of the perfume.
4 Then one of his disciples, Judas Iscariot(W) (who was about to betray him), said, 5 “Why wasn’t this perfume sold for three hundred denarii[c](X) and given to the poor?” 6 He didn’t say this because he cared about the poor but because he was a thief.(Y) He was in charge of the money-bag and would steal part of what was put in it.
7 Jesus answered, “Leave her alone; she has kept it for the day of my burial.(Z) 8 For you always have the poor with you,(AA) but you do not always have me.”
The Decision to Kill Lazarus
9 Then a large crowd of the Jews learned he was there. They came not only because of Jesus but also to see Lazarus, the one he had raised from the dead.(AB) 10 But the chief priests had decided to kill Lazarus also, 11 because he was the reason many of the Jews were deserting them[d] and believing in Jesus.
The Triumphal Entry
12 The(AC) next day, when the large crowd that had come to the festival heard that Jesus was coming to Jerusalem, 13 they took palm branches(AD) and went out to meet him. They kept shouting:
14 Jesus found a young donkey(AH) and sat on it, just as it is written:
16 His disciples did not understand these things at first. However, when Jesus was glorified, then they remembered that these things had been written about him(AK) and that they had done these things to him.
17 Meanwhile, the crowd, which had been with him when he called Lazarus out of the tomb(AL) and raised him from the dead, continued to testify.[g] 18 This is also why the crowd met him, because they heard he had done this sign. 19 Then the Pharisees said to one another, “You see? You’ve accomplished nothing. Look, the world has gone after him!” (AM)
