20 (A)But when his heart was lifted up, and his spirit was hardened in pride, he was deposed from his kingly throne, and they took his glory from him. 21 Then he was (B)driven from the sons of men, his heart was made like the beasts, and his dwelling was with the wild donkeys. They fed him with grass like oxen, and his body was wet with the dew of heaven, (C)till he [a]knew that the Most High God rules in the kingdom of men, and appoints over it whomever He chooses.

22 “But you his son, Belshazzar, (D)have not humbled your heart, although you knew all this. 23 (E)And you have [b]lifted yourself up against the Lord of heaven. They have brought the (F)vessels of [c]His house before you, and you and your lords, your wives and your concubines, have drunk wine from them. And you have praised the gods of silver and gold, bronze and iron, wood and stone, (G)which do not see or hear or know; and the God who holds your breath in His hand (H)and owns all your ways, you have not glorified. 24 Then the [d]fingers of the hand were sent from Him, and this writing was written.

25 “And this is the inscription that was written:

[e]MENE, MENE, [f]TEKEL, [g]UPHARSIN.

26 This is the interpretation of each word. MENE: God has numbered your kingdom, and finished it; 27 TEKEL: (I)You have been weighed in the balances, and found wanting; 28 PERES: Your kingdom has been divided, and given to the (J)Medes and (K)Persians.”[h]

26 (A)I make a decree that in every dominion of my kingdom men must (B)tremble and fear before the God of Daniel.

(C)For He is the living God,
And steadfast forever;
His kingdom is the one which shall not be (D)destroyed,
And His dominion shall endure to the end.
27 He delivers and rescues,
(E)And He works signs and wonders
In heaven and on earth,
Who has delivered Daniel from the [a]power of the lions.

35 (A)All the inhabitants of the earth are reputed as nothing;
(B)He does according to His will in the army of heaven
And among the inhabitants of the earth.
(C)No one can restrain His hand
Or say to Him, (D)“What have You done?”

28 “But I know your dwelling place,
Your going out and your coming in,
And your rage against Me.
29 Because your rage against Me and your tumult
Have come up to My ears,
Therefore (A)I will put My hook in your nose
And My bridle in your lips,
And I will (B)turn you back
By the way which you came.” ’

(A)Yet he does not mean so,
Nor does his heart think so;
But it is in his heart to destroy,
And cut off not a few nations.
(B)For he says,
Are not my princes altogether kings?
Is not (C)Calno (D)like Carchemish?
Is not Hamath like Arpad?
Is not Samaria (E)like Damascus?
10 As my hand has found the kingdoms of the idols,
Whose carved images excelled those of Jerusalem and Samaria,
11 As I have done to Samaria and her idols,
Shall I not do also to Jerusalem and her idols?’ ”

12 Therefore it shall come to pass, when the Lord has [a]performed all His work (F)on Mount Zion and on Jerusalem, that He will say, (G)“I will punish the fruit of the arrogant heart of the king of Assyria, and the glory of his haughty looks.”

13 (H)For he says:

“By the strength of my hand I have done it,
And by my wisdom, for I am prudent;
Also I have removed the boundaries of the people,
And have robbed their treasuries;
So I have put down the inhabitants like a [b]valiant man.
14 (I)My hand has found like a nest the riches of the people,
And as one gathers eggs that are left,
I have gathered all the earth;
And there was no one who moved his wing,
Nor opened his mouth with even a peep.”

15 Shall (J)the ax boast itself against him who chops with it?
Or shall the saw exalt itself against him who saws with it?
As if a rod could wield itself against those who lift it up,
Or as if a staff could lift up, as if it were not wood!
16 Therefore the Lord, the [c]Lord of hosts,
Will send leanness among his fat ones;
And under his glory
He will kindle a burning
Like the burning of a fire.

(A)For I was envious of the boastful,
When I saw the prosperity of the (B)wicked.

For there are no [a]pangs in their death,
But their strength is firm.
(C)They are not in trouble as other men,
Nor are they plagued like other men.
Therefore pride serves as their necklace;
Violence covers them (D)like a garment.
(E)Their [b]eyes bulge with abundance;
They have more than heart could wish.
(F)They scoff and speak wickedly concerning oppression;
They (G)speak [c]loftily.
They set their mouth (H)against the heavens,
And their tongue walks through the earth.

10 Therefore his people return here,
(I)And waters of a full cup are drained by them.
11 And they say, (J)“How does God know?
And is there knowledge in the Most High?”
12 Behold, these are the ungodly,
Who are always at ease;
They increase in riches.
