Gott, wo du wohnst, will auch ich sein

2 Höre, Gott, meinen Hilfeschrei
    und achte auf mein Gebet!
3 Aus weiter Ferne[a] rufe ich zu dir,
denn ich bin am Ende meiner Kraft.
    Ich selbst kann mich nicht mehr in Sicherheit bringen,
    darum hilf du mir und rette mich![b]

4 Zu dir kann ich jederzeit fliehen;
    du bist seit jeher meine Festung, die kein Feind bezwingen kann.
5 Wo du wohnst,[c] möchte auch ich für immer bleiben –
dort, in deinem Heiligtum.
    Bei dir suche ich Zuflucht
    wie ein Küken unter den Flügeln seiner Mutter.

6 Gott, du kennst die Versprechen, die ich dir gegeben habe.
    Du beschenkst jeden reich, der deinen Namen achtet und ehrt.
    Auch mir gibst du meinen Anteil.
7 Gib dem König ein langes Leben,
    er soll über viele Generationen regieren!
8 Lass ihn für immer in deiner Nähe bleiben,
    beschütze ihn durch deine Güte und Treue!
9 Dann will ich dich allezeit besingen und deinen Namen preisen.
    Tag für Tag werde ich erfüllen, was ich dir versprochen habe.

Psalm 61[a]

For the director of music. With stringed instruments. Of David.

1 Hear my cry, O God;(A)
    listen to my prayer.(B)

2 From the ends of the earth I call to you,
    I call as my heart grows faint;(C)
    lead me to the rock(D) that is higher than I.
3 For you have been my refuge,(E)
    a strong tower against the foe.(F)

4 I long to dwell(G) in your tent forever
    and take refuge in the shelter of your wings.[b](H)
5 For you, God, have heard my vows;(I)
    you have given me the heritage of those who fear your name.(J)

6 Increase the days of the king’s life,(K)
    his years for many generations.(L)
7 May he be enthroned in God’s presence forever;(M)
    appoint your love and faithfulness to protect him.(N)

8 Then I will ever sing in praise of your name(O)
    and fulfill my vows day after day.(P)

Psalm 61[a]

For the music director, to be played on a stringed instrument; written by David.

61 O God, hear my cry for help.
Pay attention to my prayer.
2 From the remotest place on earth[b]
I call out to you in my despair.[c]
Lead me[d] up to a rocky summit where I can be safe.[e]
3 Indeed,[f] you are[g] my shelter,
a strong tower that protects me from the enemy.[h]
4 I will be a permanent guest in your home;[i]
I will find shelter in the protection of your wings.[j] (Selah)
5 For you, O God, hear my vows;
you grant me the reward that belongs to your loyal followers.[k]
6 Give the king long life.
Make his lifetime span several generations.[l]
7 May he reign[m] forever before God.
Decree that your loyal love and faithfulness should protect him.[n]
8 Then I will sing praises to your name continually,[o]
as I fulfill[p] my vows day after day.

  10. Psalm 61:4 sn I will find shelter in the protection of your wings. The metaphor compares God to a protective mother bird.
  11. Psalm 61:5 tn Heb “you grant the inheritance of those who fear your name.” “Inheritance” is normally used of land which is granted as an inheritance; here it refers metaphorically to the blessings granted God’s loyal followers. To “fear” God’s name means to have a healthy respect for his revealed reputation which in turn motivates one to obey God’s commands (see Ps 86:11).
  12. Psalm 61:6 tn Heb “days upon days of the king add, his years like generation and generation.”sn It is not certain if the (royal) psalmist is referring to himself in the third person in this verse, or if an exile is praying on behalf of the king.
  13. Psalm 61:7 tn Heb “sit [enthroned].” The prefixed verbal form is understood as a jussive here, expressing the psalmist’s prayer.
  14. Psalm 61:7 tn Heb “loyal love and faithfulness appoint, let them protect him.”
  15. Psalm 61:8 tn Or “forever.”
  16. Psalm 61:8 tn Or perhaps, “and thereby fulfill.” The preposition with the infinitive construct here indicates an accompanying circumstance.

61 Hear my cry, O God;
Attend to my prayer.
2 From the end of the earth I will cry to You,
When my heart is overwhelmed;
Lead me to the rock that is higher than I.

3 For You have been a shelter for me,
(A)A strong tower from the enemy.
4 I will abide in Your [b]tabernacle forever;
(B)I will trust in the shelter of Your wings. Selah

5 For You, O God, have heard my vows;
You have given me the heritage of those who fear Your name.
6 You will prolong the king’s life,
His years as many generations.
7 He shall abide before God forever.
Oh, prepare mercy (C)and truth, which may [c]preserve him!

8 So I will sing praise to Your name forever,
That I may daily perform my vows.
