Psalm 60
Prayer in Difficult Times
For the choir director: according to “The Lily of Testimony.”(A) A Miktam of David for teaching. When he fought with Aram-naharaim and Aram-zobah, and Joab returned and struck Edom in Salt Valley, killing twelve thousand.(B)
1 God, you have rejected us;
you have broken us down;
you have been angry. Restore us
2 You have shaken the land and split it open.
Heal its fissures, for it shudders.(D)
3 You have made your people suffer hardship;
you have given us wine to drink
that made us stagger.(E)
4 You have given a signal flag to those who fear you,
so that they can flee before the archers.[b](F)Selah
5 Save with your right hand, and answer me,
so that those you love may be rescued.(G)
6 God has spoken in his sanctuary:[c]
“I will celebrate!
I will divide up Shechem.(H)
I will apportion the Valley of Succoth.(I)
7 Gilead is mine, Manasseh is mine,
and Ephraim is my helmet;(J)
Judah is my scepter.(K)
8 Moab is my washbasin.(L)
I throw my sandal on Edom;(M)
I shout in triumph over Philistia.”(N)

6 I have cut off nations;
their corner towers(A) are destroyed.
I have laid waste their streets,
with no one to pass through.
Their cities lie devastated,
without a person, without an inhabitant.(B)
7 I said: You will certainly fear me
and accept correction.
Then her dwelling place[a]
would not be cut off
based on all that I had allocated to her.
However, they became more corrupt
in all their actions.
8 Therefore, wait for me(C)—
this is the Lord’s declaration—
until the day I rise up for plunder.[b]
For my decision is to gather nations,
to assemble kingdoms,
in order to pour out my indignation(D) on them,
all my burning anger;
for the whole earth will be consumed
by the fire of my jealousy.(E)
Final Restoration Promised
9 For I will then restore
pure(F) speech to the peoples
so that all of them may call
on the name of the Lord
and serve him with a single purpose.[c]
10 From beyond the rivers of Cush(G)
my supplicants, my dispersed people,
will bring an offering to me.
11 On that day you[d] will not be put to shame(H)
because of everything you have done
in rebelling(I) against me.
For then I will remove
from among you your jubilant,(J) arrogant people,
and you will never again be haughty
on my holy mountain.(K)
12 I will leave
a meek and humble people(L) among you,
and they will take refuge in the name of the Lord.
13 The remnant(M) of Israel will no longer
do wrong or tell lies;
a deceitful tongue will not be found
in their mouths.
They will pasture and lie down,
with nothing to make them afraid.(N)

All Things in Common
32 Now the entire group of those who believed were of one heart and mind, and no one claimed that any of his possessions was his own, but instead they held everything in common.(A) 33 With great power the apostles were giving testimony to the resurrection of the Lord Jesus, and great grace was on all of them.(B) 34 For there was not a needy person among them because all those who owned lands or houses sold them, brought the proceeds of what was sold,(C) 35 and laid them at the apostles’ feet. This was then distributed to each person as any had need.(D)
36 Joseph, a Levite from Cyprus by birth, the one the apostles called Barnabas (which is translated Son of Encouragement),(E) 37 sold a field he owned, brought the money, and laid it at the apostles’ feet.(F)
Lying to the Holy Spirit
5 But a man named Ananias, with his wife Sapphira, sold a piece of property. 2 However, he kept back part of the proceeds with his wife’s knowledge, and brought a portion of it and laid it at the apostles’ feet.(G)
3 “Ananias,” Peter asked, “why has Satan filled your heart(H) to lie to the Holy Spirit and keep back part of the proceeds of the land? 4 Wasn’t it yours while you possessed it? And after it was sold, wasn’t it at your disposal? Why is it that you planned this thing in your heart? You have not lied to people but to God.” 5 When he heard these words, Ananias dropped dead, and a great fear came on all who heard.(I) 6 The young men got up, wrapped his body, carried him out, and buried him.(J)
7 About three hours later, his wife came in, not knowing what had happened. 8 “Tell me,” Peter asked her, “did you sell the land for this price?”
“Yes,” she said, “for that price.”
9 Then Peter said to her, “Why did you agree to test the Spirit of the Lord? Look, the feet of those who have buried your husband are at the door, and they will carry you out.”(K)
10 Instantly she dropped dead at his feet. When the young men came in, they found her dead, carried her out, and buried her beside her husband. 11 Then great fear came on the whole church and on all who heard these things.
