Psalm 60

New International Version

Psalm 60^[a]^(A)

For the director of music. To the tune of “The Lily of the Covenant.” A miktam^[b] of David. For teaching. When he fought Aram Naharaim^[c] and Aram Zobah,^[d] and when Joab returned and struck down twelve thousand Edomites in the Valley of Salt.^(B)

¹You have rejected us,^(C) God, and burst upon us;
    you have been angry^(D)—now restore us!^(E)
²You have shaken the land^(F) and torn it open;
    mend its fractures,^(G) for it is quaking.
³You have shown your people desperate times;^(H)
    you have given us wine that makes us stagger.^(I)
⁴But for those who fear you, you have raised a banner^(J)
    to be unfurled against the bow.^[e]

⁵Save us and help us with your right hand,^(K)
    that those you love^(L) may be delivered.
⁶God has spoken from his sanctuary:
    “In triumph I will parcel out Shechem^(M)
    and measure off the Valley of Sukkoth.^(N)
⁷Gilead^(O) is mine, and Manasseh is mine;
    Ephraim^(P) is my helmet,
    Judah^(Q) is my scepter.^(R)
⁸Moab is my washbasin,
    on Edom I toss my sandal;
    over Philistia I shout in triumph.^(S)”

⁹Who will bring me to the fortified city?
    Who will lead me to Edom?
¹⁰Is it not you, God, you who have now rejected us
    and no longer go out with our armies?^(T)
¹¹Give us aid against the enemy,
    for human help is worthless.^(U)
¹²With God we will gain the victory,
    and he will trample down our enemies.^(V)

²³“‘When you enter the land and plant any kind of fruit tree, regard its fruit as forbidden.^[a] For three years you are to consider it forbidden^[b]; it must not be eaten. ²⁴In the fourth year all its fruit will be holy,^(A) an offering of praise to the Lord. ²⁵But in the fifth year you may eat its fruit. In this way your harvest will be increased. I am the Lord your God.

²⁶“‘Do not eat any meat with the blood still in it.^(B)

“‘Do not practice divination^(C) or seek omens.^(D)

²⁷“‘Do not cut the hair at the sides of your head or clip off the edges of your beard.^(E)

²⁸“‘Do not cut^(F) your bodies for the dead or put tattoo marks on yourselves. I am the Lord.

²⁹“‘Do not degrade your daughter by making her a prostitute,^(G) or the land will turn to prostitution and be filled with wickedness.^(H)

³⁰“‘Observe my Sabbaths^(I) and have reverence for my sanctuary. I am the Lord.^(J)

³¹“‘Do not turn to mediums^(K) or seek out spiritists,^(L) for you will be defiled by them. I am the Lord your God.

³²“‘Stand up in the presence of the aged, show respect^(M) for the elderly^(N) and revere your God.^(O) I am the Lord.^(P)

³³“‘When a foreigner resides among you in your land, do not mistreat them. ³⁴The foreigner residing among you must be treated as your native-born.^(Q) Love them as yourself,^(R) for you were foreigners^(S) in Egypt.^(T) I am the Lord your God.

³⁵“‘Do not use dishonest standards when measuring length, weight or quantity.^(U) ³⁶Use honest scales^(V) and honest weights, an honest ephah^[c]^(W) and an honest hin.^[d]^(X) I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of Egypt.^(Y)

³⁷“‘Keep all my decrees^(Z) and all my laws^(AA) and follow them. I am the Lord.’”

To the church of the Thessalonians^(C) in God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ:

²Grace and peace to you from God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.^(D)

Thanksgiving and Prayer

³We ought always to thank God for you,^(E) brothers and sisters,^[b] and rightly so, because your faith is growing more and more, and the love all of you have for one another is increasing.^(F) ⁴Therefore, among God’s churches we boast^(G) about your perseverance and faith^(H) in all the persecutions and trials you are enduring.^(I)

⁵All this is evidence^(J) that God’s judgment is right, and as a result you will be counted worthy^(K) of the kingdom of God, for which you are suffering. ⁶God is just:^(L) He will pay back trouble to those who trouble you^(M) ⁷and give relief to you who are troubled, and to us as well. This will happen when the Lord Jesus is revealed from heaven^(N) in blazing fire^(O) with his powerful angels.^(P) ⁸He will punish^(Q) those who do not know God^(R) and do not obey the gospel of our Lord Jesus.^(S) ⁹They will be punished with everlasting destruction^(T) and shut out from the presence of the Lord^(U) and from the glory of his might^(V) ¹⁰on the day^(W) he comes to be glorified^(X) in his holy people and to be marveled at among all those who have believed. This includes you, because you believed our testimony to you.^(Y)

¹¹With this in mind, we constantly pray for you,^(Z) that our God may make you worthy^(AA) of his calling,^(AB) and that by his power he may bring to fruition your every desire for goodness^(AC) and your every deed prompted by faith.^(AD) ¹²We pray this so that the name of our Lord Jesus may be glorified in you,^(AE) and you in him, according to the grace of our God and the Lord Jesus Christ.^[c]

Do Not Worry^(A)

²⁵“Therefore I tell you, do not worry^(B) about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothes? ²⁶Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them.^(C) Are you not much more valuable than they?^(D) ²⁷Can any one of you by worrying add a single hour to your life^[a]?^(E)

²⁸“And why do you worry about clothes? See how the flowers of the field grow. They do not labor or spin. ²⁹Yet I tell you that not even Solomon in all his splendor^(F) was dressed like one of these. ³⁰If that is how God clothes the grass of the field, which is here today and tomorrow is thrown into the fire, will he not much more clothe you—you of little faith?^(G) ³¹So do not worry, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ ³²For the pagans run after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them.^(H) ³³But seek first his kingdom^(I) and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.^(J) ³⁴Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.
