Deliver Me from My Enemies
To the choirmaster: according to (A)Do Not Destroy. A (B)Miktam[a] of David, (C)when Saul sent men to watch his house in order to kill him.
59 (D)Deliver me from my enemies, O my God;
(E)protect me from those who (F)rise up against me;
2 deliver me from (G)those who work evil,
and save me from (H)bloodthirsty men.
3 For behold, they (I)lie in wait for my life;
fierce men (J)stir up strife against me.
(K)For no transgression or sin of mine, O Lord,
4 for no fault of mine, they run and make ready.
(L)Awake, come to meet me, and see!
5 You, (M)Lord God of hosts, are God of Israel.
Rouse yourself to punish all the nations;
spare none of those who treacherously plot evil. Selah
6 Each evening they (N)come back,
howling like dogs
and prowling about the city.
7 There they are, (O)bellowing with their mouths
with (P)swords in their lips—
for (Q)“Who,” they think,[b] “will hear us?”
8 But you, O Lord, (R)laugh at them;
you hold all the nations in derision.
9 O my Strength, I will watch for you,
for you, O God, are (S)my fortress.
10 (T)My God in his steadfast love[c] (U)will meet me;
God will let me (V)look in triumph on my enemies.
11 Kill them not, lest my people forget;
make them totter[d] by your power and (W)bring them down,
O Lord, our (X)shield!
12 For (Y)the sin of their mouths, the words of their lips,
let them be trapped in their pride.
For the cursing and lies that they utter,
13 (Z)consume them in wrath;
consume them till they are no more,
that they may (AA)know that God rules over Jacob
to (AB)the ends of the earth. Selah
14 (AC)Each evening they come back,
howling like dogs
and prowling about the city.
15 They (AD)wander about for food
and growl if they do not get their fill.
16 But I will sing of your strength;
I will sing aloud of your steadfast love in the morning.
For you have been to me (AE)a fortress
and (AF)a refuge in (AG)the day of my distress.
17 O my Strength, I will sing praises to you,
for you, O God, (AH)are my fortress,
(AI)the God who shows me steadfast love.

Psalm 59
To the Chief Musician; [set to the tune of] “Do Not Destroy.” Of David, a record of memorable thoughts when Saul sent men to watch his house in order to kill him.
1 Deliver me from my enemies, O my God; defend and protect me from those who rise up against me.
2 Deliver me from and lift me above those who work evil and save me from bloodthirsty men.
3 For, behold, they lie in wait for my life; fierce and mighty men are banding together against me, not for my transgression nor for any sin of mine, O Lord.
4 They run and prepare themselves, though there is no fault in me; rouse Yourself [O Lord] to meet and help me, and see!
5 You, O Lord God of hosts, the God of Israel, arise to visit all the nations; spare none and be not merciful to any who treacherously plot evil. Selah [pause, and calmly think of that]!
6 They return at evening, they howl and snarl like dogs, and go [prowling] about the city.
7 Behold, they belch out [insults] with their mouths; swords [of sarcasm, ridicule, slander, and lies] are in their lips, for who, they think, hears us?
8 But You, O Lord, will laugh at them [in scorn]; You will hold all the nations in derision.
9 O my Strength, I will watch and give heed to You and sing praises; for God is my Defense (my Protector and High Tower).
10 My God in His mercy and steadfast love will meet me; God will let me look [triumphantly] on my enemies (those who lie in wait for me).
11 Slay them not, lest my people forget; scatter them by Your power and make them wander to and fro, and bring them down, O Lord our Shield!
12 For the sin of their mouths and the words of their lips, let them even be trapped and taken in their pride, and for the cursing and lying which they utter.
13 Consume them in wrath, consume them so that they shall be no more; and let them know unto the ends of the earth that God rules over Jacob (Israel). Selah [pause, and calmly think of that]!
14 And at evening let them return; let them howl and snarl like dogs, and go prowling about the city.
15 Let them wander up and down for food and tarry all night if they are not satisfied (not getting their fill).
16 But I will sing of Your mighty strength and power; yes, I will sing aloud of Your mercy and loving-kindness in the morning; for You have been to me a defense (a fortress and a high tower) and a refuge in the day of my distress.
17 Unto You, O my Strength, I will sing praises; for God is my Defense, my Fortress, and High Tower, the God Who shows me mercy and steadfast love.

59 Au chef de chœur. Sur la mélodie de « Ne détruis pas ! ». Cantique[a] composé par David, lorsque Saül envoya cerner sa maison pour le faire mourir[b].
2 O mon Dieu ! délivre-moi ╵de mes ennemis !
Mets-moi à l’abri sur les hauteurs ╵hors de portée de mes agresseurs.
3 Délivre-moi de ces gens ╵aux agissements iniques,
et viens me sauver ╵de ces hommes sanguinaires !
4 Car les voici qui me guettent,
des hommes cruels ╵contre moi complotent
sans que j’aie commis de faute, ╵sans que j’aie péché, ╵Eternel.
5 Sans que j’aie fait aucun mal, ╵voici qu’ils accourent, ╵et qu’ils se préparent.
Réveille-toi, viens à moi ╵et regarde !
6 Eternel, ╵ô Dieu des armées célestes, ╵toi, Dieu d’Israël,
interviens ╵pour punir tous ces païens !
N’aie pas de pitié ╵pour ces traîtres malfaisants.

7 Le soir, ils reviennent, ╵en grondant comme des chiens[c],
rôdant autour de la ville.
8 Ils ont la bave à la bouche,
leurs propos sont des épées.
Ils se disent : ╵« Qui peut nous entendre ? »
9 Mais toi, Eternel, ╵tu ris de ces gens,
tu te moques ╵de tous ces païens.
10 Toi qui es ma force, ╵c’est vers toi que je regarde.
Oui, Dieu est ma forteresse.
11 Dieu qui m’aime ╵viendra au-devant de moi[d],
Dieu m’offrira en spectacle ╵tous mes ennemis.
12 Ne les extermine pas[e], ╵de peur que mon peuple oublie,
mais, par ta puissance, ╵secoue-les, renverse-les,
toi qui es Seigneur, ╵notre bouclier.
13 Toutes leurs paroles ╵ne sont que péché.
Qu’ils soient pris au piège ╵de leur propre orgueil,
pour tous leurs mensonges ╵et pour leurs malédictions !
14 Détruis-les dans ta colère, ╵détruis-les, qu’ils ne soient plus !
Alors on saura ╵que Dieu règne sur Jacob,
jusqu’aux confins de la terre !

15 Le soir, ils reviennent, ╵en grondant comme des chiens,
rôdant autour de la ville ;
16 çà et là, ils errent ╵en quête de proie.
S’ils ne sont pas rassasiés, ╵ils y passeront la nuit.
17 Moi, je chanterai ta force
et, dès le matin, ╵j’acclamerai ton amour,
car tu es pour moi ╵une forteresse,
tu es mon refuge ╵quand je suis dans la détresse !
18 Je veux donc te célébrer ╵par mes chants, ╵toi qui es ma force.
Oui, Dieu est ma forteresse : ╵c’est un Dieu qui m’aime.

1 Deliver me from my enemies, O God;(B)
be my fortress against those who are attacking me.(C)
2 Deliver me from evildoers(D)
and save me from those who are after my blood.(E)
3 See how they lie in wait for me!
Fierce men conspire(F) against me
for no offense or sin of mine, Lord.
4 I have done no wrong,(G) yet they are ready to attack me.(H)
Arise to help me; look on my plight!(I)
5 You, Lord God Almighty,
you who are the God of Israel,(J)
rouse yourself(K) to punish all the nations;(L)
show no mercy to wicked traitors.[c](M)
6 They return at evening,
snarling like dogs,(N)
and prowl about the city.
7 See what they spew from their mouths(O)—
the words from their lips are sharp as swords,(P)
and they think, “Who can hear us?”(Q)
8 But you laugh at them, Lord;(R)
you scoff at all those nations.(S)
9 You are my strength,(T) I watch for you;
you, God, are my fortress,(U)
10 my God on whom I can rely.
God will go before me
and will let me gloat over those who slander me.
11 But do not kill them, Lord our shield,[d](V)
or my people will forget.(W)
In your might uproot them
and bring them down.(X)
12 For the sins of their mouths,(Y)
for the words of their lips,(Z)
let them be caught in their pride.(AA)
For the curses and lies they utter,
13 consume them in your wrath,
consume them till they are no more.(AB)
Then it will be known to the ends of the earth
that God rules over Jacob.(AC)
