Deliver Me from My Enemies

To the choirmaster: according to (A)Do Not Destroy. A (B)Miktam[a] of David, (C)when Saul sent men to watch his house in order to kill him.

59 (D)Deliver me from my enemies, O my God;
    (E)protect me from those who (F)rise up against me;
deliver me from (G)those who work evil,
    and save me from (H)bloodthirsty men.

For behold, they (I)lie in wait for my life;
    fierce men (J)stir up strife against me.
(K)For no transgression or sin of mine, O Lord,
    for no fault of mine, they run and make ready.
(L)Awake, come to meet me, and see!
    You, (M)Lord God of hosts, are God of Israel.
Rouse yourself to punish all the nations;
    spare none of those who treacherously plot evil. Selah

Each evening they (N)come back,
    howling like dogs
    and prowling about the city.
There they are, (O)bellowing with their mouths
    with (P)swords in their lips—
    for (Q)“Who,” they think,[b] “will hear us?”

But you, O Lord, (R)laugh at them;
    you hold all the nations in derision.
O my Strength, I will watch for you,
    for you, O God, are (S)my fortress.
10 (T)My God in his steadfast love[c] (U)will meet me;
    God will let me (V)look in triumph on my enemies.

11 Kill them not, lest my people forget;
    make them totter[d] by your power and (W)bring them down,
    O Lord, our (X)shield!
12 For (Y)the sin of their mouths, the words of their lips,
    let them be trapped in their pride.
For the cursing and lies that they utter,
13     (Z)consume them in wrath;
    consume them till they are no more,
that they may (AA)know that God rules over Jacob
    to (AB)the ends of the earth. Selah

14 (AC)Each evening they come back,
    howling like dogs
    and prowling about the city.
15 They (AD)wander about for food
    and growl if they do not get their fill.

16 But I will sing of your strength;
    I will sing aloud of your steadfast love in the morning.
For you have been to me (AE)a fortress
    and (AF)a refuge in (AG)the day of my distress.
17 O my Strength, I will sing praises to you,
    for you, O God, (AH)are my fortress,
    (AI)the God who shows me steadfast love.

Judgment Against Idolatry

The word of the Lord came to me: (A)“Son of man, (B)set your face toward (C)the mountains of Israel, and (D)prophesy against them, and say, (E)You mountains of Israel, hear the word of the Lord God! Thus says the Lord God to (F)the mountains and (G)the hills, to (H)the ravines and the valleys: Behold, I, even I, will bring a sword upon you, (I)and I will destroy your high places. (J)Your altars shall become desolate, and your (K)incense altars shall be broken, and I will cast down your slain before your idols. (L)And I will lay the dead bodies of the people of Israel before their idols, (M)and I will scatter your bones around your altars. Wherever you dwell, (N)the cities shall be waste and (O)the high places ruined, so that your altars will be waste and ruined,[a] your idols broken and destroyed, your (P)incense altars cut down, and your works wiped out. And the slain shall fall in your midst, and you shall know that I am the Lord.

(Q)“Yet I will leave some of you alive. When you have among the nations (R)some who escape the sword, and when you are scattered through the countries, then those of you who escape (S)will remember me among the nations where they are carried captive, how (T)I have been broken over their whoring heart that has departed from me and over their eyes (U)that go whoring after their idols. (V)And they will be loathsome in their own sight for the evils that they have committed, for all their abominations. 10 And they shall know that I am the Lord. (W)I have not said in vain that I would do this evil to them.”

11 Thus says the Lord God: (X)“Clap your hands (Y)and stamp your foot and say, Alas, because of all the evil abominations of the house of Israel, (Z)for they shall fall by the sword, by famine, and by pestilence. 12 (AA)He who is far off shall die of pestilence, and he who is near shall fall by the sword, and he who is left and is preserved shall die of famine. (AB)Thus I will spend my fury upon them. 13 And you shall know that I am the Lord, (AC)when their slain lie among their idols around their altars, (AD)on every high hill, (AE)on all the mountaintops, (AF)under every green tree, and under (AG)every leafy oak, wherever (AH)they offered pleasing aroma to all their idols. 14 And (AI)I will stretch out my hand against them and (AJ)make the land desolate and waste, (AK)in all their dwelling places, from the wilderness to (AL)Riblah.[b] Then (AM)they will know that I am the Lord.”

The Day of the Wrath of the Lord

The word of the Lord came to me: “And you, (AN)O son of man, thus says the Lord God to the land of Israel: (AO)An end! The end has come upon the four corners of the land.[c] Now (AP)the end is upon you, and (AQ)I will send my anger upon you; (AR)I will judge you according to your ways, and I will punish you for all your abominations. (AS)And my eye will not spare you, nor will I have pity, but (AT)I will punish you for your ways, while your abominations are in your midst. (AU)Then you will know that I am the Lord.

“Thus says the Lord God: Disaster (AV)after disaster![d] Behold, it comes. (AW)An end has come; the end has come; it has awakened against you. Behold, it comes. (AX)Your doom[e] has come to you, O inhabitant of the land. (AY)The time has come; the day is near, a day of tumult, and not (AZ)of joyful shouting on the mountains. Now I will soon (BA)pour out my wrath upon you, and (BB)spend my anger against you, (BC)and judge you according to your ways, and I will punish you for all your abominations. (BD)And my eye will not spare, nor will I have pity. I will punish you according to your ways, while your abominations are in your midst. (BE)Then you will know that I am the Lord, who strikes.

10 (BF)“Behold, the day! Behold, it comes! (BG)Your doom has come; (BH)the rod has blossomed; pride has budded. 11 (BI)Violence has grown up into (BJ)a rod of wickedness. (BK)None of them shall remain, nor their abundance, nor their wealth; neither shall there be preeminence among them.[f] 12 (BL)The time has come; the day has arrived. Let not (BM)the buyer rejoice, nor (BN)the seller mourn, (BO)for wrath is upon all their multitude.[g] 13 For (BP)the seller shall not return to what he has sold, while they live. (BQ)For the vision concerns all their multitude; it shall not turn back; and because of his iniquity, none can maintain his life.[h]

14 “They have blown the trumpet and made everything ready, but none goes to battle, (BR)for my wrath is upon all their multitude. 15 (BS)The sword is without; pestilence and famine are within. (BT)He who is in the field dies by the sword, (BU)and him who is in the city famine and pestilence devour. 16 (BV)And if any survivors escape, they will be on the mountains, like (BW)doves of the valleys, all of them moaning, each one over his iniquity. 17 (BX)All hands are feeble, and all knees turn to water. 18 (BY)They put on sackcloth, and (BZ)horror covers them. Shame is on all faces, and (CA)baldness on all their heads. 19 They cast their silver into the streets, and their gold is like an unclean thing. (CB)Their silver and gold are not able to deliver them in the day of the wrath of the Lord. They cannot satisfy their hunger or fill their stomachs with it. (CC)For it was (CD)the stumbling block of their iniquity. 20 (CE)His beautiful ornament they used for pride, and (CF)they made their abominable images and their detestable things of it. Therefore (CG)I make it an unclean thing to them. 21 And I will give it into the hands of (CH)foreigners for prey, (CI)and to the wicked of the earth for spoil, and (CJ)they shall profane it. 22 I will turn my face from them, and (CK)they shall profane my treasured[i] place. Robbers shall enter (CL)and profane it.

23 (CM)“Forge a chain![j] (CN)For the land is full of bloody crimes (CO)and the city is full of violence. 24 I will bring (CP)the worst of the nations to take possession of their houses. (CQ)I will put an end to the pride of the strong, (CR)and their holy places[k] shall be profaned. 25 (CS)When anguish comes, (CT)they will seek peace, but there shall be none. 26 (CU)Disaster comes upon disaster; (CV)rumor follows rumor. (CW)They seek a vision from the prophet, while (CX)the law[l] perishes from the priest and (CY)counsel from the elders. 27 The king mourns, the prince is wrapped in despair, and the hands of the people of the land are paralyzed by terror. According to their way (CZ)I will do to them, and according to their judgments I will judge them, (DA)and they shall know that I am the Lord.”

Further Instructions

(A)Continue steadfastly in prayer, being watchful in it (B)with thanksgiving. At the same time, pray also for us, that God may (C)open to us a door for the word, (D)to declare the mystery of Christ, (E)on account of which I am in prison— that I may make it clear, which is how I ought to speak.

(F)Walk in wisdom toward (G)outsiders, making the best use of the time. Let your speech always (H)be gracious, (I)seasoned with salt, (J)so that you may know how you ought to answer each person.

Final Greetings

Tychicus will tell you (K)all about my activities. He is a beloved brother and faithful minister and fellow servant[a] in the Lord. I have sent him to you for this very purpose, that you may know how we are and that he may encourage your hearts, and with him (L)Onesimus, our faithful and (M)beloved brother, who is one of you. They will tell you of everything that has taken place here.

10 (N)Aristarchus my fellow prisoner greets you, and Mark (O)the cousin of Barnabas (concerning whom you have received instructions—(P)if he comes to you, welcome him), 11 and Jesus who is called (Q)Justus. (R)These are the only men of the circumcision among my fellow workers for the kingdom of God, and (S)they have been a comfort to me. 12 (T)Epaphras, who is one of you, a servant of Christ Jesus, greets you, always (U)struggling on your behalf in his prayers, that you may stand (V)mature and fully assured in all the will of God. 13 For I bear him witness that he has worked hard for you and for those in Laodicea and in Hierapolis. 14 (W)Luke the beloved physician greets you, as does (X)Demas. 15 Give my greetings to the brothers[b] at Laodicea, and to Nympha and (Y)the church in her house. 16 And when (Z)this letter has been read among you, have it also read in the church of the Laodiceans; and see that you also read the letter from Laodicea. 17 And say to (AA)Archippus, “See that you fulfill (AB)the ministry that you have received in the Lord.”

18 I, Paul, (AC)write this greeting with my own hand. (AD)Remember (AE)my chains. (AF)Grace be with you.
