In God I Trust

56 ^(C)Be gracious to me, O God, for man ^(D)tramples on me;
    all day long an attacker oppresses me;
²my enemies trample on me all day long,
    for many attack me proudly.
³When I am afraid,
    I ^(E)put my trust in you.
⁴In God, whose word I praise,
    in God I trust; ^(F)I shall not be afraid.
    What can flesh do to me?

⁵All day long they injure my cause;^[b]
    all their thoughts are against me for evil.
⁶They ^(G)stir up strife, they ^(H)lurk;
    they ^(I)watch my steps,
    as they have waited for my life.
⁷For their crime will they escape?
    ^(J)In wrath ^(K)cast down the peoples, O God!

⁸You have kept count of my tossings;^[c]
    ^(L)put my tears in your bottle.
    ^(M)Are they not in your book?
⁹Then my enemies will turn back
    ^(N)in the day when I call.
    This I know, that^[d] ^(O)God is for me.
¹⁰In God, whose word I praise,
    in the Lord, whose word I praise,
¹¹in God I trust; ^(P)I shall not be afraid.
    What can man do to me?

¹²I must perform my ^(Q)vows to you, O God;
    I will ^(R)render thank offerings to you.
¹³^(S)For you have delivered my soul from death,
    yes, my feet from falling,
^(T)that I may walk before God
    ^(U)in the light of life.

Let Your Glory Be over All the Earth

57 ^(Y)Be merciful to me, O God, be merciful to me,
    for in you my soul ^(Z)takes refuge;
in ^(AA)the shadow of your wings I will take refuge,
    ^(AB)till the storms of destruction pass by.
²I cry out to God Most High,
    to God who ^(AC)fulfills his purpose for me.
³^(AD)He will send from heaven and save me;
    he will put to shame ^(AE)him who tramples on me. Selah
^(AF)God will send out ^(AG)his steadfast love and his faithfulness!

⁴My soul is in the midst of ^(AH)lions;
I lie down amid fiery beasts—
the children of man, whose ^(AI)teeth are spears and arrows,
whose ^(AJ)tongues are sharp swords.

⁵^(AK)Be exalted, O God, above the heavens!
Let your glory be over all the earth!

⁶They set ^(AL)a net for my steps;
    my soul was ^(AM)bowed down.
They ^(AN)dug a pit in my way,
    but they have fallen into it themselves. Selah
⁷^(AO)My heart is ^(AP)steadfast, O God,
    my heart is steadfast!
I will sing and make melody!
⁸    ^(AQ)Awake, ^(AR)my glory!^[f]
Awake, ^(AS)O harp and lyre!
    I will awake the dawn!
⁹I will give thanks to you, O Lord, among the peoples;
    I will sing praises to you among the nations.

    your faithfulness to the clouds.

God Who Judges the Earth

58 Do you indeed decree what is right, you gods?^[h]
Do you judge the children of man uprightly?
²No, in your hearts you devise wrongs;
your hands ^(AX)deal out violence on earth.

³The wicked are ^(AY)estranged from the womb;
    they go astray from birth, speaking lies.
⁴^(AZ)They have venom like the venom of a serpent,
    like the deaf adder that stops its ear,
⁵so that it ^(BA)does not hear the voice of charmers
    or of the cunning enchanter.

⁶O God, ^(BB)break the teeth in their mouths;
    tear out the fangs of the young lions, O Lord!
⁷Let them ^(BC)vanish like water that runs away;
    when he ^(BD)aims his arrows, let them be blunted.
⁸Let them be like the snail ^(BE)that dissolves into slime,
    like ^(BF)the stillborn child who never sees the sun.
⁹Sooner than your pots can feel the heat of ^(BG)thorns,
    whether green or ablaze, may he ^(BH)sweep them away!^[i]

¹⁰^(BI)The righteous will rejoice when he sees the vengeance;
he will ^(BJ)bathe his feet in the blood of the wicked.
¹¹Mankind will say, “Surely there is ^(BK)a reward for the righteous;
surely there is a God who ^(BL)judges on earth.”

Hide Me from the Wicked

64 Hear my voice, O God, in my ^(A)complaint;
    preserve my life from dread of the enemy.
²Hide me from ^(B)the secret plots of the wicked,
    from the throng of evildoers,
³who ^(C)whet their tongues like swords,
    who ^(D)aim bitter words like arrows,
⁴shooting from ^(E)ambush at the blameless,
    shooting at him suddenly and ^(F)without fear.
⁵They ^(G)hold fast to their evil purpose;
    they talk of ^(H)laying snares secretly,
thinking, ^(I)“Who can see them?”
⁶    They search out injustice,
saying, “We have accomplished a diligent search.”
    For ^(J)the inward mind and heart of a man are deep.

⁷^(K)But God shoots his arrow at them;
    they are wounded suddenly.
⁸They are brought to ruin, with their own ^(L)tongues turned against them;
    all who ^(M)see them will ^(N)wag their heads.
⁹Then all mankind ^(O)fears;
    they ^(P)tell what God has brought about
    and ponder what he has done.

¹⁰Let ^(Q)the righteous one rejoice in the Lord
and ^(R)take refuge in him!

O God of Our Salvation

65 Praise ^(T)is due to you,^[a] O God, in Zion,
    and to you shall ^(U)vows be performed.
²O you who ^(V)hear prayer,
    to you ^(W)shall all flesh come.
³When ^(X)iniquities prevail against me,
    you ^(Y)atone for our transgressions.
⁴^(Z)Blessed is the one you choose and bring near,
    to ^(AA)dwell in your courts!
We shall be ^(AB)satisfied with the goodness of your house,
    the holiness of your temple!

⁵By ^(AC)awesome deeds you answer us with righteousness,
    O God of our salvation,
the hope of all ^(AD)the ends of the earth
    and of the farthest seas;
⁶the one who by his strength established the mountains,
    being ^(AE)girded with might;
⁷who ^(AF)stills the roaring of the seas,
    the roaring of their waves,
    ^(AG)the tumult of the peoples,
⁸so that those who dwell at the ends of the earth are in awe at your signs.
You make the going out of the morning and the evening to shout for joy.

⁹You visit the earth and ^(AH)water it;^[b]
    you greatly enrich it;
^(AI)the river of God is full of water;
    ^(AJ)you provide their grain,
    for so you have prepared it.
¹⁰You water its furrows abundantly,
    settling its ridges,

    and blessing its growth.
¹¹You crown the year with your bounty;
    your wagon tracks ^(AL)overflow with abundance.
¹²^(AM)The pastures of the wilderness overflow,
    the hills ^(AN)gird themselves with joy,

    the valleys deck themselves with grain,

1 The words of Jeremiah, the son of Hilkiah, one ^(A)of the priests who were in ^(B)Anathoth in the land of Benjamin, ²to whom the word of the Lord came in the days of ^(C)Josiah the son of Amon, king of Judah, in ^(D)the thirteenth year of his reign. ³It came also in the days of ^(E)Jehoiakim the son of Josiah, king of Judah, and ^(F)until the end of the eleventh year of ^(G)Zedekiah, the son of Josiah, king of Judah, ^(H)until the captivity of Jerusalem in the fifth month.

The Call of Jeremiah

⁴Now the word of the Lord came to me, saying,

⁵^(I)“Before I formed you in the womb I knew you,
and before you were born ^(J)I consecrated you;
I appointed you a prophet ^(K)to the nations.”

⁶Then I said, “Ah, Lord God! Behold, ^(L)I do not know how to speak, ^(M)for I am only a youth.” ⁷But the Lord said to me,

“Do not say, ‘I am only a youth’;
for to all to whom I send you, you shall go,
and ^(N)whatever I command you, you shall speak.
⁸^(O)Do not be afraid of them,
^(P)for I am with you to deliver you,
declares the Lord.”

⁹^(Q)Then the Lord put out his hand and ^(R)touched my mouth. And the Lord said to me,

“Behold, I have put ^(S)my words in your mouth.
¹⁰See, I have set you this day ^(T)over nations and over kingdoms,
^(U)to pluck up and to break down,
to destroy and to overthrow,
to build and to plant.”

¹¹And the word of the Lord came to me, saying, ^(V)“Jeremiah, what do you see?” And I said, “I see an almond^[a] branch.” ¹²Then the Lord said to me, “You have seen well, for I am watching over my word to perform it.”

¹³The word of the Lord came to me a second time, saying, “What do you see?” And I said, “I see ^(W)a boiling pot, facing away ^(X)from the north.” ¹⁴Then the Lord said to me, ^(Y)“Out of the north disaster^[b] shall be let loose upon all the inhabitants of the land. ¹⁵For behold, ^(Z)I am calling all the tribes of the kingdoms of the north, declares the Lord, ^(AA)and they shall come, and every one shall set his throne at the entrance of the gates of Jerusalem, against all its walls all around and against all the cities of Judah. ¹⁶And ^(AB)I will declare my judgments against them, for all their evil ^(AC)in forsaking me. ^(AD)They have made offerings to other gods and ^(AE)worshiped the works of their own hands. ¹⁷But you, ^(AF)dress yourself for work;^[c] arise, and ^(AG)say to them everything that I command you. ^(AH)Do not be dismayed by them, lest I dismay you before them. ¹⁸And I, behold, I make you this day ^(AI)a fortified city, ^(AJ)an iron pillar, and ^(AK)bronze walls, against the whole land, against the kings of Judah, its officials, its priests, and the people of the land. ¹⁹^(AL)They will fight against you, but they shall not prevail against you, for ^(AM)I am with you, declares the Lord, to deliver you.”

Longing to Go to Rome

⁸First, ^(P)I thank my God through Jesus Christ for all of you, ^(Q)because your faith is proclaimed in all the world. ⁹^(R)For God is my witness, ^(S)whom I serve with my spirit in the gospel of his Son, ^(T)that without ceasing I mention you ¹⁰always in my prayers, asking that somehow ^(U)by God's will I may now at last succeed in coming to you. ¹¹For ^(V)I long to see you, that I may impart to you some spiritual gift to strengthen you— ¹²that is, that we may be mutually encouraged ^(W)by each other's faith, both yours and mine. ¹³I do not want you to be unaware, brothers,^[c] that ^(X)I have often intended to come to you (but ^(Y)thus far have been prevented), in order that I may reap some ^(Z)harvest among you as well as among the rest of the Gentiles. ¹⁴^(AA)I am under obligation both to Greeks and to ^(AB)barbarians,^[d] both to the wise and to the foolish. ¹⁵So I am eager to preach the gospel to you also who are in Rome.

They marveled that he was talking with a woman, but no one said, “What do you seek?” or, “Why are you talking with her?” ²⁸So the woman left her water jar and went away into town and said to the people, ²⁹“Come, see a man ^(B)who told me all that I ever did. Can this be the Christ?” ³⁰They went out of the town and were coming to him.

³¹Meanwhile the disciples were urging him, saying, ^(C)“Rabbi, eat.” ³²But he said to them, “I have food to eat that you do not know about.” ³³So the disciples said to one another, ^(D)“Has anyone brought him something to eat?” ³⁴Jesus said to them, ^(E)“My food is ^(F)to do the will of him who sent me and ^(G)to accomplish his work. ³⁵Do you not say, ‘There are yet four months, then comes the harvest’? ³⁹Many Samaritans ^(O)from that town believed in him ^(P)because of ^(Q)the woman's testimony, “He told me all that I ever did.” ⁴⁰So when the Samaritans came to him, they asked him to stay with them, and he stayed there two days. ⁴¹And many more believed ^(R)because of his word. ⁴²They said to the woman, “It is no longer because of what you said that we believe, for we have heard for ourselves, ^(S)and we know that this is indeed ^(T)the Savior ^(U)of the world.”
