56 Be merciful unto me, O God: for man would swallow me up; he fighting daily oppresseth me.
2 Mine enemies would daily swallow me up: for they be many that fight against me, O thou most High.
3 What time I am afraid, I will trust in thee.
4 In God I will praise his word, in God I have put my trust; I will not fear what flesh can do unto me.
5 Every day they wrest my words: all their thoughts are against me for evil.
6 They gather themselves together, they hide themselves, they mark my steps, when they wait for my soul.
7 Shall they escape by iniquity? in thine anger cast down the people, O God.
8 Thou tellest my wanderings: put thou my tears into thy bottle: are they not in thy book?
9 When I cry unto thee, then shall mine enemies turn back: this I know; for God is for me.
10 In God will I praise his word: in the Lord will I praise his word.
11 In God have I put my trust: I will not be afraid what man can do unto me.
12 Thy vows are upon me, O God: I will render praises unto thee.
13 For thou hast delivered my soul from death: wilt not thou deliver my feet from falling, that I may walk before God in the light of the living?

Övervunnen rädsla
1-3 Herre, var barmhärtig mot mig! Hela dagen har fiendetrupperna ryckt fram. Många är stolta över att få strida mot mig. De längtar efter att kunna besegra mig!
4-5 Men när jag är rädd, sätter jag mitt hopp till Gud. Jag litar på dina löften. Vad kan vanliga dödliga människor göra mot mig, så länge jag litar på dig?
6 De försöker alltid förvränga vad jag säger. Alla deras planer går ut på att skada mig.
7 De gömmer sig överallt och lyssnar efter mina steg och väntar på ett lämpligt tillfälle att döda mig.
8 De tror att de ska lyckas! Men låt dem inte göra det, Herre! Slå dem till marken i din vrede!
9 Du har sett hur jag plågad har irrat omkring. Alla mina tårar har du räknat, ja du har antecknat varenda en av dem i din bok.
10 Den dag jag ropar till dig om hjälp, kommer striden att vända och mina fiender att fly! Därför vet jag att Gud är på min sida!
11-12 Jag tror på Gud och prisar honom för hans löften. Jag är inte rädd för någonting som dessa människor skulle kunna göra mig!
13 Herre, jag ska utan att tveka göra vad jag har lovat dig.
14 Tack för att du har räddat mig undan döden och styrt mina steg, så att jag inte har fallit. Därför får jag leva vidare i din närhet och vandra i livets ljus.

1 Be merciful to me,(A) my God,
for my enemies are in hot pursuit;(B)
all day long they press their attack.(C)
2 My adversaries pursue me all day long;(D)
in their pride many are attacking me.(E)
3 When I am afraid,(F) I put my trust in you.(G)
4 In God, whose word I praise—(H)
in God I trust and am not afraid.(I)
What can mere mortals do to me?(J)
5 All day long they twist my words;(K)
all their schemes are for my ruin.
6 They conspire,(L) they lurk,
they watch my steps,(M)
hoping to take my life.(N)
7 Because of their wickedness do not[c] let them escape;(O)
in your anger, God, bring the nations down.(P)
8 Record my misery;
list my tears on your scroll[d](Q)—
are they not in your record?(R)
9 Then my enemies will turn back(S)
when I call for help.(T)
By this I will know that God is for me.(U)
10 In God, whose word I praise,
in the Lord, whose word I praise—
11 in God I trust and am not afraid.

56 Be (B)merciful to me, O God, for man would swallow me up;
Fighting all day he oppresses me.
2 My enemies would (C)hound me all day,
For there are many who fight against me, O Most High.
3 Whenever I am afraid,
I will trust in You.
4 In God (I will praise His word),
In God I have put my trust;
(D)I will not fear.
What can flesh do to me?
5 All day they twist my words;
All their thoughts are against me for evil.
6 They gather together,
They hide, they mark my steps,
When they lie in wait for my life.
7 Shall they escape by iniquity?
In anger cast down the peoples, O God!
8 You number my wanderings;
Put my tears into Your bottle;
(E)Are they not in Your book?
9 When I cry out to You,
Then my enemies will turn back;
This I know, because (F)God is for me.

What can man do to me?
