Psalm 56

A Call for God’s Protection

For the choir director: according to “A Silent Dove Far Away.” A Miktam of David. When the Philistines seized him in Gath.(A)

Be gracious to me, God, for a man is trampling me;
he fights and oppresses me all day long.
My adversaries trample me all day,
for many arrogantly fight against me.[a](B)

When I am afraid,
I will trust in you.(C)
In God, whose word I praise,
in God I trust; I will not be afraid.
What can mere mortals do to me?(D)

They twist my words all day long;
all their thoughts against me are evil.(E)
They stir up strife,[b] they lurk,
they watch my steps
while they wait to take my life.(F)
Will they escape in spite of such sin?
God, bring down the nations in wrath.(G)

You yourself have recorded my wanderings.[c]
Put my tears in your bottle.
Are they not in your book?(H)
Then my enemies will retreat on the day when I call.(I)
This I know: God is for me.(J)

10 In God, whose word I praise,
in the Lord, whose word I praise,
11 in God I trust; I will not be afraid.
What can mere humans do to me?(K)

12 I am obligated by vows[d] to you, God;
I will make my thanksgiving sacrifices to you.(L)
13 For you rescued me from death,
even my feet from stumbling,
to walk before God in the light of life.(M)

Destruction of the Temple Predicted

24 As Jesus left and was going out of the temple,(A) his disciples(B) came up and called his attention to its buildings. He replied to them, “Do you see all these things? Truly I tell you, not one stone will be left here on another that will not be thrown down.”

Signs of the End of the Age

While he was sitting on the Mount of Olives, the disciples approached him privately and said, “Tell us, when will these things happen? And what is the sign of your coming and of the end of the age?” (C)

Jesus replied to them, “Watch out that no one deceives(D) you. For many will come in my name, saying, ‘I am the Messiah,’ and they will deceive many.(E) You are going to hear of wars and rumors of wars. See that you are not alarmed, because these things must take place, but the end is not yet. For nation will rise up against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. There will be famines[a](F) and earthquakes in various places.(G) All these events are the beginning of labor pains.(H)

Jonah’s Preaching

The word of the Lord came to Jonah a second time:(A) “Get up! Go to the great city of Nineveh(B) and preach(C) the message that I tell you.” Jonah got up and went to Nineveh according to the Lord’s command.

Now Nineveh was an extremely great city,[a](D) a three-day walk. Jonah set out on the first day of his walk in the city and proclaimed,(E) “In forty days Nineveh will be demolished!” Then the people of Nineveh believed God. They proclaimed a fast(F) and dressed in sackcloth—from the greatest of them to the least.

When word reached the king of Nineveh, he got up from his throne, took off his royal robe, covered himself with sackcloth,(G) and sat in ashes. Then he issued a decree(H) in Nineveh:

By order of the king and his nobles: No person or animal, herd or flock, is to taste anything at all. They must not eat or drink water. Furthermore, both people and animals must be covered with sackcloth, and everyone must call out earnestly to God.(I) Each must turn from his evil ways(J) and from his wrongdoing.[b] Who knows?(K) God may turn and relent; he may turn from his burning anger so that we will not perish.(L)

10 God saw their actions—that they had turned from their evil ways(M)—so God relented from the disaster(N) he had threatened them with. And he did not do it.
