In God I Trust

56 ^(C)Be gracious to me, O God, for man ^(D)tramples on me;
    all day long an attacker oppresses me;
²my enemies trample on me all day long,
    for many attack me proudly.
³When I am afraid,
    I ^(E)put my trust in you.
⁴In God, whose word I praise,
    in God I trust; ^(F)I shall not be afraid.
    What can flesh do to me?

⁵All day long they injure my cause;^[b]
    all their thoughts are against me for evil.
⁶They ^(G)stir up strife, they ^(H)lurk;
    they ^(I)watch my steps,
    as they have waited for my life.
⁷For their crime will they escape?
    ^(J)In wrath ^(K)cast down the peoples, O God!

⁸You have kept count of my tossings;^[c]
    ^(L)put my tears in your bottle.
    ^(M)Are they not in your book?
⁹Then my enemies will turn back
    ^(N)in the day when I call.
    This I know, that^[d] ^(O)God is for me.
¹⁰In God, whose word I praise,
    in the Lord, whose word I praise,
¹¹in God I trust; ^(P)I shall not be afraid.
    What can man do to me?

¹²I must perform my ^(Q)vows to you, O God;
    I will ^(R)render thank offerings to you.
¹³^(S)For you have delivered my soul from death,
    yes, my feet from falling,
^(T)that I may walk before God
    ^(U)in the light of life.

Let Your Glory Be over All the Earth

57 ^(D)Be merciful to me, O God, be merciful to me,
    for in you my soul ^(E)takes refuge;
in ^(F)the shadow of your wings I will take refuge,
    ^(G)till the storms of destruction pass by.
²I cry out to God Most High,
    to God who ^(H)fulfills his purpose for me.
³^(I)He will send from heaven and save me;
    he will put to shame ^(J)him who tramples on me. Selah
^(K)God will send out ^(L)his steadfast love and his faithfulness!

⁴My soul is in the midst of ^(M)lions;
I lie down amid fiery beasts—
the children of man, whose ^(N)teeth are spears and arrows,
whose ^(O)tongues are sharp swords.

⁵^(P)Be exalted, O God, above the heavens!
Let your glory be over all the earth!

⁶They set ^(Q)a net for my steps;
    my soul was ^(R)bowed down.

I will sing and make melody!

Laws Concerning Divorce

24 “When a man takes a wife and marries her, if then she finds no favor in his eyes because he has found some indecency in her, and ^(A)he writes her a certificate of divorce and puts it in her hand and sends her out of his house, and she departs out of his house, ²and if she goes and becomes another man's wife, ³and the latter man hates her and writes her a certificate of divorce and puts it in her hand and sends her out of his house, or if the latter man dies, who took her to be his wife, ⁴then ^(B)her former husband, who sent her away, may not take her again to be his wife, after she has been defiled, for that is an abomination before the Lord. And you shall not bring sin upon the land that the Lord your God is giving you for an inheritance.

⁵^(C)“When a man is newly married, he shall not go out with the army or be liable for any other public duty. He shall be free at home one year ^(D)to be happy with his wife^[a] whom he has taken.

⁶“No one shall take a mill or an upper millstone in pledge, for that would be taking a life in pledge.

⁷^(E)“If a man is found stealing one of his brothers of the people of Israel, and if he ^(F)treats him as a slave or sells him, then that thief shall die. ^(G)So you shall purge the evil from your midst.

⁸“Take care, in ^(H)a case of leprous^[b] disease, to be very careful to do according to all that the Levitical priests shall direct you. As I commanded them, so you shall be careful to do. ⁹Remember what the Lord your God did to ^(I)Miriam ^(J)on the way as you came out of Egypt.

¹⁰“When you make your neighbor a loan of any sort, you shall not go into his house to collect his pledge. ¹¹You shall stand outside, and the man to whom you make the loan shall bring the pledge out to you. ¹²And if he is a poor man, you shall not sleep in his pledge. ¹³^(K)You shall restore to him the pledge as the sun sets, that he may sleep in his cloak and ^(L)bless you. And ^(M)it shall be righteousness for you before the Lord your God.

¹⁴“You shall not ^(N)oppress a hired worker who is poor and needy, whether he is one of your brothers or one of the sojourners who are in your land within your towns. ¹⁵^(O)You shall give him his wages on the same day, before the sun sets (for he is poor and counts on it), ^(P)lest he cry against you to the Lord, and you be guilty of sin.

¹⁶^(Q)“Fathers shall not be put to death because of their children, nor shall children be put to death because of their fathers. Each one shall be put to death for his own sin.

¹⁷^(R)“You shall not pervert the justice due to the sojourner or to the fatherless, ^(S)or take a widow's garment in pledge, ¹⁸but ^(T)you shall remember that you were a slave in Egypt and the Lord your God redeemed you from there; therefore I command you to do this.

¹⁹^(U)“When you reap your harvest in your field and forget a sheaf in the field, you shall not go back to get it. It shall be for the sojourner, the fatherless, and the widow, ^(V)that the Lord your God may bless you in all the work of your hands. ²⁰When you beat your olive trees, you shall not go over them again. It shall be for the sojourner, the fatherless, and the widow. ²¹When you gather the grapes of your vineyard, you shall not strip it afterward. It shall be for the sojourner, the fatherless, and the widow. ²²^(W)You shall remember that you were a slave in the land of Egypt; therefore I command you to do this.

You Must Be Ready

³⁵^(A)“Stay dressed for action^[a] and ^(B)keep your lamps burning, ³⁶and be like men who are ^(C)waiting for their master to come home from the wedding feast, so that they may open the door to him at once when he comes and ^(D)knocks. ³⁷^(E)Blessed are those servants^[b] whom the master finds ^(F)awake when he comes. Truly, I say to you, ^(G)he will dress himself for service and ^(H)have them recline at table, and he will come and serve them. ³⁸If he comes in the second watch, or in the third, and finds them awake, blessed are those servants! ³⁹^(I)But know this, that if the master of the house had known at what hour ^(J)the thief was coming, he^[c] would not have left his house to be broken into. ⁴⁰You also must be ^(K)ready, for ^(L)the Son of Man is coming at an hour you do not expect.”

⁴¹Peter said, “Lord, ^(M)are you telling this parable for us or for all?” ⁴²And the Lord said, “Who then is ^(N)the faithful and ^(O)wise ^(P)manager, whom his master will set over his household, to give them their portion of food at the proper time? ⁴³^(Q)Blessed is that servant^[d] whom his master will find so doing when he comes. ⁴⁴Truly, I say to you, ^(R)he will set him over all his possessions. ⁴⁵But if that servant says to himself, ‘My master ^(S)is delayed in coming,’ and begins to beat the male and female servants, and to eat and drink and ^(T)get drunk, ⁴⁶the master of that servant will come ^(U)on a day when he does not expect him and ^(V)at an hour he does not know, and will cut him in pieces and put him with the unfaithful. ⁴⁷^(W)And that servant who ^(X)knew his master's will but ^(Y)did not get ready ^(Z)or act according to his will, will receive a ^(AA)severe beating. ⁴⁸^(AB)But the one who did not know, and did what deserved a beating, ^(AC)will receive a light beating. ^(AD)Everyone to whom much was given, of him much will be required, and from him to whom they entrusted much, they will demand the more.

Not Peace, but Division

⁴⁹^(AE)“I came to cast fire on the earth, and would that it were already kindled! ⁵⁰^(AF)I have a baptism to be baptized with, and how ^(AG)great is my distress until it is accomplished! ⁵¹^(AH)Do you think that I have come to give peace on earth? ^(AI)No, I tell you, but rather division. ⁵²For from now on in one house there will be five divided, three against two and two against three. ⁵³They will be divided, ^(AJ)father against son and son against father, mother against daughter and daughter against mother, mother-in-law against her daughter-in-law and daughter-in-law against mother-in-law.”
