Psalm 55

Complaint about a Friend’s Treachery

To the leader: with stringed instruments. A Maskil of David.

Give ear to my prayer, O God;
    do not hide yourself from my supplication.(A)
Attend to me and answer me;
    I am troubled in my complaint.
I am distraught(B) by the noise of the enemy,
    because of the clamor of the wicked.
For they bring[a] trouble upon me,
    and in anger they bear a grudge against me.(C)

My heart is in anguish within me;
    the terrors of death have fallen upon me.(D)
Fear and trembling come upon me,
    and horror overwhelms me.(E)
And I say, “O that I had wings like a dove!
    I would fly away and be at rest;(F)
truly, I would flee far away;
    I would lodge in the wilderness; Selah

Jesus Is Named

21 When the eighth day came, it was time to circumcise the child,[a] and he was called Jesus, the name given by the angel before he was conceived in the womb.(A)

Jesus Is Presented in the Temple

22 When the time came for their purification according to the law of Moses, they brought him up to Jerusalem to present him to the Lord(B) 23 (as it is written in the law of the Lord, “Every firstborn male shall be designated as holy to the Lord”),(C) 24 and they offered a sacrifice according to what is stated in the law of the Lord, “a pair of turtledoves or two young pigeons.”

25 Now there was a man in Jerusalem whose name was Simeon; this man was righteous and devout, looking forward to the consolation of Israel, and the Holy Spirit rested on him.(D) 26 It had been revealed to him by the Holy Spirit that he would not see death before he had seen the Lord’s Messiah.[b](E) 27 Guided by the Spirit, Simeon[c] came into the temple, and when the parents brought in the child Jesus to do for him what was customary under the law,(F) 28 Simeon[d] took him in his arms and praised God, saying,

29 “Master, now you are dismissing your servant in peace,
    according to your word,(G)
30 for my eyes have seen your salvation,(H)
31     which you have prepared in the presence of all peoples,
32 a light for revelation to the gentiles
    and for glory to your people Israel.”(I)

33 And the child’s father and mother were amazed at what was being said about him. 34 Then Simeon blessed them and said to his mother Mary, “This child is destined for the falling and the rising of many in Israel and to be a sign that will be opposed(J) 35 so that the inner thoughts of many will be revealed—and a sword will pierce your own soul, too.”

36 There was also a prophet, Anna the daughter of Phanuel, of the tribe of Asher. She was of a great age, having lived with her husband seven years after her marriage,(K) 37 then as a widow to the age of eighty-four. She never left the temple but worshiped there with fasting and prayer night and day.(L) 38 At that moment she came and began to praise God and to speak about the child[e] to all who were looking for the redemption of Jerusalem.(M)

18 since many boast according to human standards,[a] I will also boast. 19 For you gladly put up with fools, being wise yourselves! 20 For you put up with it when someone makes slaves of you or preys upon you or takes advantage of you or puts on airs or gives you a slap in the face. 21 To my shame, I must say, we were too weak for that!

But whatever anyone dares to boast of—I am speaking as a fool—I also dare to boast of that.(A) 22 Are they Hebrews? So am I. Are they Israelites? So am I. Are they descendants of Abraham? So am I.(B) 23 Are they ministers of Christ? I am talking like a madman—I am a better one: with far greater labors, far more imprisonments, with countless floggings, and often near death.(C) 24 Five times I have received from the Jews the forty lashes minus one.(D) 25 Three times I was beaten with rods. Once I received a stoning. Three times I was shipwrecked; for a night and a day I was adrift at sea;(E) 26 on frequent journeys, in danger from rivers, danger from bandits, danger from my own people, danger from gentiles, danger in the city, danger in the wilderness, danger at sea, danger from false brothers and sisters;(F) 27 in toil and hardship, through many a sleepless night, hungry and thirsty, often without food,[b] cold and naked.(G) 28 And, besides other things, I am under daily pressure because of my anxiety for all the churches. 29 Who is weak, and I am not weak? Who is made to stumble, and I am not indignant?(H)

30 If I must boast, I will boast of the things that show my weakness.(I)
