⁴ My heart is in anguish^(G) within me;
    the terrors^(H) of death have fallen on me.
⁵ Fear and trembling^(I) have beset me;
    horror^(J) has overwhelmed me.
⁶ I said, “Oh, that I had the wings of a dove!
    I would fly away and be at rest.
⁷ I would flee far away
    and stay in the desert;^[c](K)
8 I would hurry to my place of shelter,^(L)
    far from the tempest and storm.^(M)”

⁹ Lord, confuse the wicked, confound their words,^(N)
    for I see violence and strife^(O) in the city.^(P)
10 Day and night they prowl^(Q) about on its walls;
    malice and abuse are within it.
¹¹ Destructive forces^(R) are at work in the city;
    threats and lies^(S) never leave its streets.

¹² If an enemy were insulting me,
    I could endure it;
if a foe were rising against me,
    I could hide.
¹³ But it is you, a man like myself,
    my companion, my close friend,^(T)
14 with whom I once enjoyed sweet fellowship^(U)
    at the house of God,^(V)
as we walked about
    among the worshipers.

¹⁵ Let death take my enemies by surprise;^(W)
    let them go down alive to the realm of the dead,^(X)
    for evil finds lodging among them.

¹⁶ As for me, I call to God,
    and the Lord saves me.
¹⁷ Evening,^(Y) morning^(Z) and noon^(AA)
    I cry out in distress,
    and he hears my voice.
¹⁸ He rescues me unharmed
    from the battle waged against me,
    even though many oppose me.
¹⁹ God, who is enthroned from of old,^(AB)
    who does not change—
he will hear^(AC) them and humble them,
    because they have no fear of God.^(AD)

²⁰ My companion attacks his friends;^(AE)
    he violates his covenant.^(AF)
21 His talk is smooth as butter,^(AG)
    yet war is in his heart;
his words are more soothing than oil,^(AH)
    yet they are drawn swords.^(AI)

²² Cast your cares on the Lord
    and he will sustain you;^(AJ)
he will never let
    the righteous be shaken.^(AK)
23 But you, God, will bring down the wicked
    into the pit^(AL) of decay;
the bloodthirsty and deceitful^(AM)
    will not live out half their days.^(AN)

But as for me, I trust in you.^(AO)

² I say to the Lord, “You are my Lord;^(C)
    apart from you I have no good thing.”^(D)
3 I say of the holy people^(E) who are in the land,^(F)
    “They are the noble ones in whom is all my delight.”
⁴ Those who run after other gods^(G) will suffer^(H) more and more.
    I will not pour out libations of blood to such gods
    or take up their names^(I) on my lips.

⁵ Lord, you alone are my portion^(J) and my cup;^(K)
    you make my lot^(L) secure.
⁶ The boundary lines^(M) have fallen for me in pleasant places;
    surely I have a delightful inheritance.^(N)
7 I will praise the Lord, who counsels me;^(O)
    even at night^(P) my heart instructs me.
⁸ I keep my eyes always on the Lord.
    With him at my right hand,^(Q) I will not be shaken.^(R)

⁹ Therefore my heart is glad^(S) and my tongue rejoices;
    my body also will rest secure,^(T)
10 because you will not abandon me to the realm of the dead,^(U)
    nor will you let your faithful^[b] one^(V) see decay.^(W)
11 You make known to me the path of life;^(X)
    you will fill me with joy in your presence,^(Y)
    with eternal pleasures^(Z) at your right hand.^(AA)

³ Though you probe my heart,^(AH)
    though you examine me at night and test me,^(AI)
you will find that I have planned no evil;^(AJ)
    my mouth has not transgressed.^(AK)
4 Though people tried to bribe me,
    I have kept myself from the ways of the violent
    through what your lips have commanded.
⁵ My steps have held to your paths;^(AL)
    my feet have not stumbled.^(AM)

⁶ I call on you, my God, for you will answer me;^(AN)
    turn your ear to me^(AO) and hear my prayer.^(AP)
7 Show me the wonders of your great love,^(AQ)
    you who save by your right hand^(AR)
    those who take refuge^(AS) in you from their foes.
⁸ Keep me^(AT) as the apple of your eye;^(AU)
    hide me^(AV) in the shadow of your wings^(AW)
9 from the wicked who are out to destroy me,
    from my mortal enemies who surround me.^(AX)

¹⁰ They close up their callous hearts,^(AY)
    and their mouths speak with arrogance.^(AZ)
11 They have tracked me down, they now surround me,^(BA)
    with eyes alert, to throw me to the ground.
¹² They are like a lion^(BB) hungry for prey,^(BC)
    like a fierce lion crouching in cover.

¹³ Rise up,^(BD) Lord, confront them, bring them down;^(BE)
    with your sword rescue me from the wicked.
¹⁴ By your hand save me from such people, Lord,
    from those of this world^(BF) whose reward is in this life.^(BG)
May what you have stored up for the wicked fill their bellies;
    may their children gorge themselves on it,
    and may there be leftovers^(BH) for their little ones.

¹⁵ As for me, I will be vindicated and will see your face;
    when I awake,^(BI) I will be satisfied with seeing your likeness.^(BJ)
