Cast Your Burden on the Lord

To the choirmaster: with (A)stringed instruments. A Maskil[a] of David.

55 (B)Give ear to my prayer, O God,
    and hide not yourself from my plea for mercy!
Attend to me, and answer me;
    I am restless (C)in my complaint and I (D)moan,
because of the noise of the enemy,
    because of the oppression of the wicked.
For they (E)drop trouble upon me,
    and in anger they bear a grudge against me.

My heart is in anguish within me;
    (F)the terrors of death have fallen upon me.
Fear and trembling come upon me,
    and (G)horror (H)overwhelms me.
And I say, “Oh, that I had wings like a dove!
    I would fly away and be at rest;
(I)yes, I would wander far away;
    I would lodge in the wilderness; Selah
I would hurry to find a shelter
    from (J)the raging wind and tempest.”

Destroy, O Lord, (K)divide their tongues;
    for I see (L)violence and strife in the city.
10 Day and night they go around it
    on its walls,
and (M)iniquity and trouble are within it;
11     ruin is in its midst;
(N)oppression and fraud
    do not depart from its marketplace.

12 For it is not an enemy who taunts me—
    then I could bear it;
it is not an adversary who (O)deals insolently with me—
    then I could hide from him.
13 (P)But it is you, a man, my equal,
    my companion, my familiar friend.
14 We used to take sweet counsel together;
    within God's house we walked in (Q)the throng.
15 Let death steal over them;
    let them go down to Sheol (R)alive;
    for evil is in their dwelling place and in their heart.

16 But I call to God,
    and the Lord will save me.
17 (S)Evening and (T)morning and at (U)noon
    I (V)utter my complaint and moan,
    and he hears my voice.
18 He redeems my soul in safety
    from the battle that I wage,
    for (W)many are arrayed against me.
19 God will give ear and humble them,
    he who is (X)enthroned from of old, Selah
because they do not (Y)change
    and do not fear God.

20 My companion[b] (Z)stretched out his hand against his friends;
    he violated his covenant.
21 His (AA)speech was (AB)smooth as butter,
    yet war was in his heart;
his words were softer than oil,
    yet they were (AC)drawn swords.

22 (AD)Cast your burden on the Lord,
    and he will sustain you;
(AE)he will never permit
    the righteous to be moved.

23 But you, O God, (AF)will cast them down
    into (AG)the pit of destruction;
men of (AH)blood and treachery
    shall not (AI)live out half their days.
But I will (AJ)trust in you.

Ezekiel's Call

And he said to me, (A)“Son of man,[a] (B)stand on your feet, and I will speak with you.” And as he spoke to me, (C)the Spirit entered into me and (D)set me on my feet, and I heard him speaking to me. And he said to me, “Son of man, I send you to the people of Israel, to (E)nations of rebels, who have rebelled against me. (F)They and their fathers have transgressed against me to this very day. The descendants also are (G)impudent and stubborn: I send you to them, and you shall say to them, ‘Thus says the Lord God.’ And (H)whether they hear or refuse to hear (for they are (I)a rebellious house) (J)they will know that a prophet has been among them. And you, son of man, (K)be not afraid of them, nor be afraid of their words, (L)though briers and thorns are with you and you sit on (M)scorpions.[b] Be not afraid of their words, nor be dismayed at their looks, for they are a rebellious house. And you shall speak my words to them, (N)whether they hear or refuse to hear, for they are a rebellious house.

“But you, son of man, hear what I say to you. (O)Be not rebellious like that rebellious house; open your mouth and (P)eat what I give you.” And when I looked, behold, (Q)a hand was stretched out to me, and behold, (R)a scroll of a book was in it. 10 And he spread it before me. And it had writing (S)on the front and on the back, and there were written on it words of lamentation and mourning and woe.

And he said to me, (T)“Son of man, eat whatever you find here. (U)Eat this scroll, and go, speak to the house of Israel.” So I opened my mouth, and he gave me this scroll to eat. And he said to me, “Son of man, feed your belly with this scroll that I give you and fill your stomach with it.” (V)Then I ate it, and it was in my mouth (W)as sweet as honey.

And he said to me, (X)“Son of man, go to the house of Israel and speak with my words to them. For you are not sent to a people of foreign speech and a hard language, but to the house of Israel— not to many peoples of foreign speech and a hard language, whose words you cannot understand. (Y)Surely, if I sent you to such, they would listen to you. (Z)But the house of Israel will not be willing to listen to you, for they are not willing to listen to me: because all the house of Israel (AA)have a hard forehead and a stubborn heart. (AB)Behold, I have made your face as hard as their faces, and your forehead as hard as their foreheads. Like (AC)emery harder than flint have I made your forehead. (AD)Fear them not, nor be dismayed at their looks, for they are a rebellious house.” 10 Moreover, he said to me, “Son of man, (AE)all my words that I shall speak to you receive (AF)in your heart, and hear with your ears. 11 And go to the exiles, (AG)to your people, and speak to them and say to them, (AH)‘Thus says the Lord God,’ (AI)whether they hear or refuse to hear.”

12 (AJ)Then the Spirit[c] lifted me up, and I heard behind me the voice[d] of (AK)a great earthquake: “Blessed be the glory of the Lord from its place!” 13 It was the sound of the wings of (AL)the living creatures as they touched one another, and the sound of the wheels beside them, and the sound of (AM)a great earthquake. 14 (AN)The Spirit lifted me up and took me away, and I went in bitterness in the heat of my spirit, the (AO)hand of the Lord being strong upon me. 15 (AP)And I came to the exiles at Tel-abib, who were dwelling (AQ)by the Chebar canal, and I sat where they were dwelling.[e] And (AR)I sat there (AS)overwhelmed among them (AT)seven days.

A Watchman for Israel

16 (AU)And at the end of seven days, the word of the Lord came to me: 17 (AV)“Son of man, (AW)I have made you a watchman for the house of Israel. Whenever you hear a word from my mouth, you shall (AX)give them warning from me. 18 (AY)If I say to the wicked, (AZ)‘You shall surely die,’ (BA)and you give him no warning, nor speak to warn the wicked from his wicked way, in order to save his life, that wicked person (BB)shall die for[f] his iniquity, (BC)but his blood I will require at your hand. 19 (BD)But if you warn the wicked, and he does not turn from his wickedness, or from his wicked way, he shall die for his iniquity, (BE)but you (BF)will have delivered your soul. 20 (BG)Again, if a righteous person turns from his righteousness and commits injustice, (BH)and I lay a stumbling block before him, he shall die. (BI)Because you have not warned him, he shall die for his sin, (BJ)and his righteous deeds that he has done shall not be remembered, (BK)but his blood I will require at your hand. 21 But if you warn the righteous person not to sin, and he does not sin, he shall surely live, because he took warning, and you will have delivered your soul.”

22 (BL)And the hand of the Lord was upon me there. And he said to me, “Arise, go out into (BM)the valley,[g] and (BN)there I will speak with you.” 23 So I arose and went out into the valley, and behold, (BO)the glory of the Lord stood there, like the glory that I had seen (BP)by the Chebar canal, (BQ)and I fell on my face. 24 (BR)But the Spirit entered into me and set me on my feet, and he spoke with me and said to me, “Go, shut yourself within your house. 25 And you, O son of man, behold, (BS)cords will be placed upon you, and you shall be bound with them, so that you cannot go out among the people. 26 And I will make your tongue cling to the roof of your mouth, so that (BT)you shall be mute and unable to reprove them, (BU)for they are a rebellious house. 27 (BV)But when I speak with you, I will open your mouth, and you shall say to them, (BW)‘Thus says the Lord God.’ (BX)He who will hear, let him hear; and he who will refuse to hear, let him refuse, for they are a rebellious house.
