Psalm 51
International Children’s Bible

A Prayer for Forgiveness

For the director of music. A song of David when the prophet Nathan came to David after David’s sin with Bathsheba.

51 God, be merciful to me
    because you are loving.
Because you are always ready to be merciful,
    wipe out all my wrongs.
2 Wash away all my guilt
    and make me clean again.

3 I know about my wrongs.
    I can’t forget my sin.
4 You are the one I have sinned against.
    I have done what you say is wrong.
So you are right when you speak.
    You are fair when you judge me.
5 I was brought into this world in sin.
    In sin my mother gave birth to me.

6 You want me to be completely truthful.
    So teach me wisdom.
7 Take away my sin, and I will be clean.
    Wash me, and I will be whiter than snow.
8 Make me hear sounds of joy and gladness.
    Let the bones you crushed be happy again.
9 Turn your face from my sins.
    Wipe out all my guilt.

10 Create in me a pure heart, God.
    Make my spirit right again.
11 Do not send me away from you.
    Do not take your Holy Spirit away from me.
12 Give me back the joy that comes when you save me.
    Keep me strong by giving me a willing spirit.
13 Then I will teach your ways to those who do wrong.
    And sinners will turn back to you.

14 God, save me from the guilt of murder.
    God, you are the one who saves me.
    I will sing about your goodness.
15 Lord, let me speak
    so I may praise you.
16 You are not pleased by sacrifices.
    Otherwise, I would give them.
    You don’t want burnt offerings.
17 The sacrifice God wants is a willing spirit.
    God, you will not reject
    a heart that is broken and sorry for its sin.

18 Do whatever good you wish for Jerusalem.
    Rebuild the walls of Jerusalem.
19 Then you will be pleased with right sacrifices and whole burnt offerings.
    And bulls will be offered on your altar.

51 Lạy Đức Chúa Trời, xin thương xót tôi
    Tùy theo tình yêu thương Chúa.
Vì lòng thương xót dư dật của Ngài,
    Xin xóa bỏ các vi phạm tôi.
2 Xin rửa sạch mọi gian ác tôi,
    Và luyện sạch các tội lỗi tôi.
3 Vì tôi nhận biết các vi phạm tôi,
    Tội lỗi tôi hằng ở trước mặt tôi.
4 Tôi đã phạm tội cùng Ngài, chỉ một mình Ngài thôi.
    Tôi đã làm điều ác trước mặt Ngài,
Cho nên Ngài là công bình khi tuyên án,
    Ngài là chính đáng[a] khi phán xét.
5 Thật vậy,[b] tôi vốn gian ác từ khi sinh ra,[c]
    Tôi vốn tội lỗi từ khi được hoài thai trong bụng mẹ.[d]
6 Này, Ngài muốn sự chân thật nơi bề trong cũng như nơi sâu kín của lòng tôi.
    Xin Ngài dạy tôi sự khôn ngoan.[e]
7 Xin Ngài dùng nhánh bài hương tẩy sạch tôi, thì tôi sẽ tinh sạch.
    Xin Ngài rửa tôi thì tôi sẽ trắng hơn tuyết.
8 Xin cho tôi nghe tiếng vui vẻ và mừng rỡ,
    Nguyện xương cốt mà Ngài đã đánh gẫy được vui mừng.
9 Xin Ngài ngoảnh mặt đừng để ý đến các tội lỗi tôi,
    Và xóa bỏ mọi gian ác tôi.
10 Đức Chúa Trời ôi, xin tạo nên trong tôi một tấm lòng trong sạch
    Và làm mới lại trong tôi một tâm linh chân chính.[f]
11 Xin chớ xua đuổi tôi khỏi trước mặt Ngài,
    Cũng đừng cất thánh linh Ngài khỏi tôi.
12 Xin phục hồi cho tôi niềm vui của sự cứu rỗi Ngài.
    Xin ban cho tôi một tinh thần sẵn sàng để giữ vững tôi.[g]
13 Tôi sẽ dạy các đường lối Ngài cho những kẻ vi phạm,
    Và những kẻ tội lỗi sẽ quay về cùng Ngài.
14 Lạy Đức Chúa Trời, là Đức Chúa Trời cứu rỗi tôi,
    Xin giải cứu tôi khỏi tội đổ huyết[h]
    Thì lưỡi tôi sẽ lớn tiếng ca ngợi sự công chính Ngài.
15 Lạy Chúa, xin mở môi tôi,
    Thì miệng tôi sẽ ca ngợi Ngài.
16 Vì Ngài không vui lòng về tế lễ hy sinh,
    Bằng không tôi đã dâng.[i] Tế lễ thiêu Ngài cũng không thích.
17 Tế lễ hy sinh đẹp lòng Đức Chúa Trời[j] là tâm thần tan vỡ.
    Đức Chúa Trời ôi, tấm lòng ăn năn tan vỡ
    Ngài không khinh bỉ đâu.
18 Theo lòng nhân từ Ngài, xin ban phúc lành[k] cho Si-ôn.
    Xin xây dựng[l] các tường thành Giê-ru-sa-lem.
19 Bấy giờ, Ngài sẽ vui lòng về các tế lễ công chính,[m]
    Tế lễ thiêu và tế lễ toàn thiêu.
    Bấy giờ, bò đực sẽ được dâng trên bàn thờ Ngài.

For the director of music. A psalm of David when the prophet Nathan came to him. Nathan came to him after David had committed adultery with Bathsheba.

51 God, have mercy on me
    according to your faithful love.
Because your love is so tender and kind,
    wipe out my lawless acts.
2 Wash away all the evil things I’ve done.
    Make me pure from my sin.

3 I know the lawless acts I’ve committed.
    I can’t forget my sin.
4 You are the one I’ve really sinned against.
    I’ve done what is evil in your sight.
So you are right when you sentence me.
    You are fair when you judge me.
5 I know I’ve been a sinner ever since I was born.
    I’ve been a sinner ever since my mother became pregnant with me.
6 I know that you wanted faithfulness even when I was in my mother’s body.
    You taught me wisdom in that secret place.

7 Sprinkle me with hyssop, then I will be clean.
    Wash me, then I will be whiter than snow.
8 Let me hear you say, “Your sins are forgiven.”
    That will bring me joy and gladness.
    Let the body you have broken be glad.
9 Take away all my sins.
    Wipe away all the evil things I’ve done.

10 God, create a pure heart in me.
    Give me a new spirit that is faithful to you.
11 Don’t send me away from you.
    Don’t take your Holy Spirit away from me.
12 Give me back the joy that comes from being saved by you.
    Give me a spirit that obeys you so that I will keep going.

13 Then I will teach your ways to those who commit lawless acts.
    And sinners will turn back to you.
14 You are the God who saves me.
    I have committed murder.
    God, take away my guilt.
Then my tongue will sing about how right you are
    no matter what you do.
15 Lord, open my lips so that I can speak.
    Then my mouth will praise you.
16 You don’t take delight in sacrifice.
    If you did, I would bring it.
    You don’t take pleasure in burnt offerings.
17 The greatest sacrifice you want is a broken spirit.
    God, you will gladly accept a heart
    that is broken because of sadness over sin.

18 May you be pleased to give Zion success.
    May it please you to build up the walls of Jerusalem.
19 Then you will delight in the sacrifices of those who do what is right.
    Whole burnt offerings will bring delight to you.
    And bulls will be offered on your altar.

1 Have mercy(B) on me, O God,
    according to your unfailing love;(C)
according to your great compassion(D)
    blot out(E) my transgressions.(F)
2 Wash away(G) all my iniquity
    and cleanse(H) me from my sin.

3 For I know my transgressions,
    and my sin is always before me.(I)
4 Against you, you only, have I sinned(J)
    and done what is evil in your sight;(K)
so you are right in your verdict
    and justified when you judge.(L)
5 Surely I was sinful(M) at birth,(N)
    sinful from the time my mother conceived me.
6 Yet you desired faithfulness even in the womb;
    you taught me wisdom(O) in that secret place.(P)

7 Cleanse(Q) me with hyssop,(R) and I will be clean;
    wash me, and I will be whiter than snow.(S)
8 Let me hear joy and gladness;(T)
    let the bones(U) you have crushed rejoice.
9 Hide your face from my sins(V)
    and blot out(W) all my iniquity.

10 Create in me a pure heart,(X) O God,
    and renew a steadfast spirit within me.(Y)
11 Do not cast me(Z) from your presence(AA)
    or take your Holy Spirit(AB) from me.
12 Restore to me the joy of your salvation(AC)
    and grant me a willing spirit,(AD) to sustain me.(AE)

13 Then I will teach transgressors your ways,(AF)
    so that sinners(AG) will turn back to you.(AH)
14 Deliver me(AI) from the guilt of bloodshed,(AJ) O God,
    you who are God my Savior,(AK)
    and my tongue will sing of your righteousness.(AL)
15 Open my lips, Lord,(AM)
    and my mouth will declare your praise.
16 You do not delight in sacrifice,(AN) or I would bring it;
    you do not take pleasure in burnt offerings.
17 My sacrifice,(AO) O God, is[b] a broken spirit;
    a broken and contrite heart(AP)
    you, God, will not despise.

18 May it please you to prosper Zion,(AQ)
    to build up the walls of Jerusalem.(AR)
19 Then you will delight in the sacrifices of the righteous,(AS)
    in burnt offerings(AT) offered whole;
    then bulls(AU) will be offered on your altar.
